CAN / CAN'T
"Can" is a modal (auxiliary) verb. The way modal verbs are treated in the English language is
different from normal verbs. For example, modal verbs don't have a third person form or an
infinitive form:
He can swim. (NOT He cans swim)
We hope to be able to visit you soon. (NOT We hope to can visit you soon.)
We don't use "do/does" in negatives, questions, tags, short answers, etc.:
Can you pick me up later? (NOT Do you can pick me up later?)
I can't speak French. (NOT I don't can speak French.)
The verb we use after a modal is an infinitive without "to":
I can call you later. (NOT I can to call you later.)
I can't go swimming. (NOT I can't going swimming.)
Negative
The negative form of "can" has a long and short form:
She can't read yet. (short form = appropriate in most situations)
I'm sorry, you cannot come in. (long form = formal)
Uses
"Can" has a variety of uses. Compare the following:
I can help you with the shopping. (OFFER)
Yes, you can go to Jimmy's house. (PERMISSION)
Can you speak Russian? (ABILITY)
Can you give me a hand? (REQUEST)
The roads can get busy at this time of year. (POSSIBILITY/TENDENCY)
You can't smoke here. (PROHIBITION)
