NTA JEE Main marks vs percentile: Why IIT JEE Main Result announced in
percentile?
NTA conducts the JEE Main 2023 on multiple dates, generally in two sessions per day. The candidates
will be given different sets of questions per session and it is quite possible that in spite of all efforts
of maintaining equivalence among various question papers, the difficulty level of these question
papers administered in different sessions may not be exactly the same. Some of the candidates may
end up attempting a relatively tougher set of questions when compared to other sets. The
candidates who attempt the comparatively tougher examination are likely to get lower marks as
compared to those who attempt the easier one. In order to overcome such a situation,
“Normalization procedure based on Percentile Score” is used for ensuring that candidates are neither
benefitted nor disadvantaged due to the difficulty level of the examination. With the objective of
ensuring that a candidate’s true merit is identified and that a level playing field is created in the
above context, the Normalization Procedure, set out below shall be adopted, for compiling the NTA
scores for multi-session papers.
The official brochure says, "The process of Normalization is an established practice for comparing
candidate scores across multi-session papers and is similar to those being adopted in other large
educational selection tests conducted in India. For normalization across sections, NTA shall use the
percentile equivalence."
JEE Main 2023 Marks vs Percentile Normalization:
Normalization is incorporated to equalize the difficulty levels of the exam when it is conducted in two
sessions. So NTA will declare the percentile in JEE Main 2023 obtained after normalization. Percentile
scores indicate the percentage of candidates that have scored equal to or below (same or lower raw
scores) that particular percentile in that examination and this is generally from a scale of 100 to 0 for
each session of examinees. Therefore, the higher scorer of each JEE Main 2023 session will end up
securing the same percentile of 100 which is desirable.
NTA will compile the raw marks of the students and normalize the same to arrive at the percentile
scores for each subject – Maths, Physics, and Chemistry as well as the total as a part of the marking
scheme of JEE Mains. The highest score of each JEE Main 2023 session will get the same percentile of
100 which is ideal. The marks obtained between the highest and lowest scores will also be converted
to percentiles and candidates can get to know their JEE Main marks vs percentile. This percentile
score will be used for the preparation of the merit lists. It is to be noted that the percentile scores will
be calculated up to 7 decimal places such that the bunching effect can be reduced as can ties
amongst candidates with the same scores. To understand the marks vs percentile of JEE Main in a
better way here we have given JEE Main previous year marks vs percentile in table.
JEE Main Marks vs Percentile 2023 - How NTA Scores are Calculated
The detailed process with examples for the JEE Main normalization is explained here
Tie breaker guidelines: These guidelines come into effect when two or more candidates obtain equal
percentile scores. The inter-se-merit- is determined in the order given as follows
• Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Scores in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
• Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Scores in Physics will be given the higher JEE Main rank
2022.
• Candidates obtaining a higher Percentile Score in Chemistry will get a higher rank.
• Candidates older in age will be given preference.
JEE Main 2023 results will be released separately for each of the sessions on jeemain.nta.nic.in. NTA

NTA JEE Main Marks vs Percentile: What is Percentile Scores?
Percentile scores are scores that are based on the relative performance of all those who appear for
the NTA JEE Main 2023 exam. The marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0
for each session of examinees. The Percentile Score indicates the percentage of candidates that have
scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW (same or lower raw scores) that particular Percentile in that
examination. Therefore the topper (highest score) of each session will get the same Percentile of 100
which is desirable. The marks obtained in between the highest and lowest scores are also converted
to appropriate Percentiles.
