What do you like about Mátészalka?

Mátészalka is the 2nd biggest town in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, so it is a regional

center of education, culture, industry and traffic.

Cultural Center

The oldest street of Mátészalka is the Kossuth street, which is full of cultural values.

Here you can find the Szatmári Museum, which is famous for its permanent and
temporary exhibitions.

Its permanent exhibition is a horse-drawn vehicle collection, which consists of

equipages, mourning equipages, carriages, carts.

Besides this permanent exhibition you can visit temporary exhibitions on paintings, photos,
sculptures.

On the right of the museum you can find 2 churches a Calvinist and Catholic one. Not far
from them there is also a synagogue which gives home to concerts & exhibitions. (so it
doesn’t function as a church because it needs renovating.)Now it has a marble memorial wall
with Jewish names printed on it commemorating those who had to go to the forced labour
camp during the Nazi period.Between the churches and the museum you can find a famous
monument namely „a boy with wick in his hand”, which symbolizes that Mátészalka was the
first settlement where the electricity lit the public lamps first in Hungary in 1888.

This is the place where the city festival always starts. This festival is organized at the end
of each August with the name „Bright Days Cultural & Tourist Festival” (Its name
commemorates the event in 1888)

This 3-day festival always starts with a torchlight procession and it is full of cultural &
entertaining programmes:

 open-air concerts
 charity running
 conferences with twin-town delegations
 street-fair (you can buy local specialities, handmade products)

If you are a theatre-lover, you can enjoy performances all through the year. Not only amateur
but also professional plays are performed here. (musicals, tragedies, comedies)

Mátészalka is considered to be the „town of statues” because here you can find several
statues, monuments and ornamental wells, fountains. Actually the town is lucky enough
to have a sculptor(Lajos Bíró) couple who have already made many works of art:

 the millennial monument of our state-founder Steven King the first on a horse
(which is surrounded with a semicircular collonade)
 7-Leaders’ well, which is a famous relaxing area for the pedestrians because it is
in the middle of a park in the town center.
Sports facilities

The sports lovers can choose from indoor and outdoor sports facilities but of course there are
some that are still missing from the town (squash court etc.)

As for the indoor facilities you can go to the sports hall where you can not only pursue
different kinds of ball games, but you can also watch exciting handball and football matches.
Besides you can also swim in the newly-built swimming-pool where you can also enjoy the
thermal water(it has a curative power for/beneficial effect on the rheumatic problems of the
joints and spine). If you wish to work out, you can go to well-equipped gyms.

As far as the outdoor ones are concerned you can play football on a football ground/pitch,
you can play tennis on tennis courts or you can go running on the running tracks around a
football field.

Industrial park

In the suburb of Msz there is a huge industrial park with different kinds of factories and
companies. The most dominant is the optical profile because there are four factories focusing
on it: Carl Zeiss, Hoya , MOM and Szatmár optics. They produce different kinds of lenses for
spectacles, telescopes and microscopes. Besides one can find

 meat processing factory,

 a dairy factory , which is famous for its Túró Rudi(cottage cheese roll in
chocolate coat) .Unfortunately most of them are in foreign property, but they provide
employment facilities for the local inhabitants.

Food industrial companies:

 Friesland produces cottage cheese products ( cottage cheese rolls

coated with chocolate)
 Öcsi Hús (meat processing company)
 Nobilis >>>>>>>it produces dried fruit products
