Is Going Green a Trend or Is it Real Change in Our World?
From local businesses to close friends, it seems like everyone has begun “going green” within the past few years. But what
does this mean, exactly? In general terms, “going green” ____(1)____ to eco-friendly living. It means recycling when possible,
using sustainable products, eating local food and doing whatever you can to decrease your impact on Mother Earth. The trend is
driven largely by the ever-growing scientific suggestion that global warming is real and problematic. So is going green just a
trend?
The answer to that question probably depends on whom you ask. While some scoff at the thought of global warming in
general, and ____(2)___put green living pretty low down on their list of priorities, others strive to care for the environment in
everything they do. The former category of people would probably call eco-friendly living a trend, while the latter considers it
an essential shift of lifestyle.
Some critics of this emerging eco-friendly “fad” emphasize their belief that global warming isn’t really the alarming change
_____(3)_____the majority of scientists say it is. They point to a chosen _____(4)____ who consider the overall rise in
temperature and resulting changes in the earth a natural shift. They say that going green is good for business. For instance, when
a company can brand its products as environmentally friendly, they’ll fly off the shelves.
However, not everyone feels this way. Many people ____(5)____believe that going green is an effective and important way
to halt global warming in its tracks, leaving a healthy planet for their children and grandchildren. No matter how small the steps
they take, each and every move in the right direction makes a small impact that will eventually add up to an enormous shift in
the environment. It’s just a matter of perspective.

Read the following passage and mark the letter to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
You’ve surely heard the expression "It is better to give than to receive." But do you believe it? It's always nice to receive a
lovely gift from someone, but study after study proves that there really is something to that old saying.
Society often tells us that we need to have more - more money, more toys, more everything - in order to be happy. But there
is no proof that this does us any good. We end up working and striving to get more and more, and consequently feel miserable
and defeated because, in reality, there's a link between giving and the happiness we seek.
While the statistics vary, it's safe to assume that about half the adults in the United States play the lottery. These people are
hoping to hit it big so their lives will improve. They dream of how great everything will be when they have the money to live
comfortably. But have you heard of "the curse of the lottery"? There are countless stories of lottery winners whose lives fell
apart after coming into instant money. What they thought would make them happy ended up making them distressed and
heartbroken.
Beckett University senior psychology lecturer Steve Taylor, Ph.D. writes, “Even extremely rich people such as billionaires
are not significantly happier than others. That Bill and Melinda Gates have announced their divorce after 27 years of marriage is
an indication, at least in the term of marital happiness. Studies have shown that American and British people are less contented
now than they were 50 years ago, although their material wealth is much higher.”
If you want to be happy in life, it has nothing to do with how much you have. On the contrary, it has to do with what you are
willing to give. When people were given a sum of money, they gained more well-being if they spent it on other people, or gave
it away, rather than spending it on themselves." Why? Because it is, indeed, better to give than to receive.
There is scientific proof showing a link in the brain between giving and happiness. One study sought to find out if the
prospect of giving could make participants happier. Half the group was told they were receiving money that they needed to
spend on someone else. The other half was told they were required to spend the money on themselves. Both groups were told to
imagine how they were going to spend the money when they received it. After conducting MRI tests and multiple other tests to
rule out any other contributing factors, the researchers determined that generosity improved the level of happiness in
participants, regardless of the recipient or the amount of money.
1: What could be the best title for the passage?
A. No Money, No Happiness B. The Definition Of Happiness
C. Success Doesn’t Equal Happiness D. The Link Between Giving And Happiness
2: According to paragraph 3, why do about half the adults in the United States play the lottery?
A. They do it for donation
B. They long to make a big fortune overnight
C. They consider it as a personal indulgence
D. They believe hitting the jackpot is not difficult
3: The word " distressed " in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. despondent thất vọng, chán nản B. perseverant C. passionate D. sanguine
4: The word "it" in paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. money B. happiness C. well-being D. life
5: According to the last paragraph, which of the following is NOT mentioned as a process of the study?
A. The participants were divided into two groups
B. Half the group was told to imagine how they were going to spend the money when they received it
C. MRI tests were conducted to find out the result
D. the researchers did some more tests to ensure the objective conclusion
Read the following passage and mark the letter to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Julie Francis feels stagnant. She has been stuck, quite literally, in her parent’s home in Michigan since May. It isn’t the
worst thing in the world, she acknowledges; many people have suffered worse fates in 2020 due to Covid-19. But for the past
few months, the drudgery of the job-search process has exhausted Francis, a Kettering University graduate in electrical
engineering. She logs onto Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn day after day to submit the same résumé and slightly tailored cover
letter, crossing her fingers for a response. “I had no preference. I was applying everywhere,” the 22-year-old, who graduated this
year, said. “I kept a list of every company I spoke to, and I applied to over 200 places and interviewed with five.”
The job hunt varies by region and sector, but according to employed graduates, securing a position often boils down to luck,
timing, and a robust professional network. Meanwhile, some of their peers, who hold degrees in nursing, communications,
psychology, and engineering, to name a few are struggling to find decent-paying work in their respective fields, which adversely
impacts their student loan payments.
“I’ve been averaging about three to five job applications a day since March, and I’ve only had four interview requests, two
of which never got back to me,” said Kyle Arguello, a 24-year-old graduate of the University of New Mexico, who is searching
for jobs in academic advising. “I’ve probably applied to around 1,400 positions in the Albuquerque metro area. That number
sounds crazy, but that’s pretty much all I’ve been doing.” Arguello’s anecdote, and that of many others his age, is one of
desperation, of realizing that the uncertainty of the present supersedes any five- or 10-year career plans. While there’s a
plenitude of online job listings, Arguello said he is either deemed underqualified, competing with candidates with years more
experience, or overqualified for entry-level, minimum-wage positions.
Arguello and his girlfriend have considered leaving New Mexico, since wages there are, on average, lower than in other
states. But regardless of where they end up, Arguello is worried that his own “failure to launch” has begun to impact his life
trajectory. “Will I ever own a house because right now, the positions I do qualify for barely pay enough to live,” he said. “My
girlfriend and I have cried about it. Are we going to have a shot at a life the older generation has?”
Most young adults have little choice but to focus on the present and the potential benefits of an additional degree. Matt
Duffy, a University of Florida graduate student, is optimistic that the extra year of schooling will help define his career path.
“I’m trying to take a look at the options available to me and realizing that the traditional path is out the window,” Duffy, 22, told
me. “If I’m not able to get a job because places aren’t hiring, I need to figure out how to survive.” Through a recent class
assignment, he has cultivated a Facebook community with more than 100,000 members called Born Zillennial, as a space for
