Fanta's Wartime Origins

Fanta was invented in Germany in 1941 by Max Keith, the manager of Coca Cola GmbH, after the US entered WWII and Keith could no longer obtain Coca Cola syrup from the US. He created a new soda using ingredients available like whey and apple fiber. It was sweetened with saccharin or beet sugar. People liked it immediately and 3 million cases were sold in 1943. The name "Fanta" came from an employee contest where they were told to let their "Fantasie" run wild. It is now sold in 188 countries worldwide with Orange being the most popular flavor at 70% of sales.

How it all began

During World War II, Coca Cola GmbH were the German bottlers for Coke
under the leadership of their manager, Max Keith. After the United States

entered the war in 1941, Max Keith couldn't get Coca Cola syrup from America
to make Coke because then the US and Germany were enemies. Keith was
not willing to lose his company, so he invented a
new drink out of the ingredients he had available.
This new soda was made from the leavings of other food industries, for
example whey (a cheese by-product) and apple fiber from cider presses. As
for which fruits were used in the formulation, it all depended on what was
available at the time, so the flavour could differ from one production to the
next!!! The drink was sweetened with saccharin, but by 1941 Coca Cola
GmbH were permitted to use 3.5 percent beet sugar.  Therefore, some
people used Fanta to flavour tea, soup or even stew!
People liked it immediately. In 1943 alone 3 million cases of Fanta were sold
in Germany.

What’s in a name
Fanta got its name thanks to Keith's instructions to employees during the
contest to christen the beverage — he told them to let their Fantasie (Geman
for fantasy) run wild. Upon hearing that, veteran salesman Joe Knipp
immediately came up with Fanta. He won the contest, but perhaps he did not
realize at the time that Fanta would become a popular brand name around
the world.
Modern times

The Coca-Cola Company acquired Fanta in 1960. Today, it is sold in 188

countries, and it sells best in Brazil, Germany, Spain, Japan, Italy and
Argentina.

Fanta Orange is the main flavour, representing about 70% of sales, but other
citrus and fruit flavours have also become popular. Nowadays it comes
in seventy different flavours, although some are only available within
the country of manufacture.
