Christmas traditions are very important for

Colombians, because through them the

culture of the country is reflected. People
who are abroad do not stop celebrating this
time of togetherness and magic despite the
distance.

December 24 and in general the whole month, is

the most yearned for by all Colombian families
inside and outside the country. The lights, music
and Colombian traditions are beginning to be
seen in different places around the world.
And although there are many ways to experience
Christmas, Colombia's Christmas traditions are
unique.
Lighting: Christmas tradition that begins
the season

Celebration of Little Candles in Colombia

The lights are one of the most important Christmas
traditions for Colombians, as they kick off this very
special season. Seeing the illuminated streets, full of
lights and colors, make this experience something
unique and magical. Some places, such as Medellín
and Villa de Leyva, surprise each year with their
illuminations and the Christmas atmosphere they
reflect.
For Colombians, going out to see the lights is a perfect
activity to share with family and friends.
Christmas tree: the Christmas tradition
that cannot be missed

Christmas tree
Christmas traditions would not be complete without
the Christmas tree. Colombian families meet at the
beginning of December to assemble it, choose its
decorations, define its colors and even untangle the
lights. It usually has classic elements, such as
Christmas balls, and very Colombian elements, such
as crafts made by the smallest members of the family.
This decorative element of Christmas traditions is
extremely important for each member of the family.
This is where gifts are received on December 24,
brought by the Child God. Some places, such as
shopping centers and municipal squares, also set up
their Christmas tree so that people can take photos
and enjoy a family space.
Manger: a very Colombian Christmas
tradition

Manger
The manger is undoubtedly one of the most
representative Christmas traditions in Colombia. It is
the way in which the birth of the Child God is
recreated in each of the homes. All family members
participate when putting it together, bringing out
their creativity and putting elements such as villages,
rivers, sheep and human figures. It is usually placed in
a spacious and showy place in the house.
In addition, you can find cribs of all sizes. From the
small ones, which are placed in homes, to the largest
and most innovative, which are set up in parks and
squares to be visited by families. There are also very
Colombian versions of this Christmas tradition, in
which, for example, the dolls have typical Colombian
costumes.
Dinner: Christmas traditions through
Colombian gastronomy

Christmas dinner in Colombia

On December 24, one of the most special Colombian
Christmas traditions takes place: the Christmas
dinner. It is an occasion to gather the family around
the table, including visitors from other countries. It is
generally served at midnight, before the delivery of
gifts.
The Christmas dinner and the food offered in it
depend a lot on the region of Colombia where the
diners come from. The most typical dishes are:
tamales, suckling pig, fritters, stuffed chicken and cold
meats. In addition, the sweet touch cannot be missing
in this celebration, so you will surely find custard and
figs.
