San Miguel Corporation
I. Introduction
As a child growing up, San Miguel is a name I often hear. My father and his mates used to hang
out in our house, and I am the one that is tasked to buy San Miguel beer in the store. I didn’t
know at first that San Miguel Is also a name of a corporation that is one of the top in the food
and beverages industry. I also watched commercials on the television about San Miguel
Corporation’s variety of products. They are not just famous for their renowned liquor but is also
well known for their food products. That is why I chose San Miguel Corporation as the topic for
my short research.
San Miguel Corporation was founded in 1890 as single product brewery here in our country. It
is southeast Asia's oldest and largest brewer. Don Enrique Ma Barretto de Ycaza established
the brewery as La Fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel. He named the company after the section
of Manila in which he lived and worked. The company was incorporated in 1913 following the
death of Don Pedro Roxas. San Miguel started exporting to other countries such as Hong Kong,
Shanghai, and Guam. Andrés Soriano y Roxas joined San Miguel in 1918, in which he initiated
the company’s diversification through vertical integration. By 1920s, the company expanded into
nonalcoholic beverages with the creation of Royal Soft Drinks Plant in 1922. Later years, San
Miguel entered the frozen foods market with the creation of Magnolia Ice Cream Plant. Soriano
created the first non-U.S. national Coca-Cola bottling and distribution franchise in 1927. By the
early 1990s, Magnolia held four-fifths of the frozen dessert market and San Miguel had captured
over two-thirds of the domestic soft drink market. In 1963, the company shortened its name to
San Miguel Corporation. Over the decades, San Miguel earned a formidable reputation as a
fierce competitor.
II. Corporate Governance
Bigger company means bigger the risk and bigger management. San Miguel Corporation needs
to be consistently innovative to keep themselves in the competition. They must take risks to be
a step ahead of their competitor. They have to keep tabs on other companies’ latest product so
as to match it with their own. With this formula in mind, the company managed to stay afloat up
to now.
Manpower is also a key factor when it comes to handling bigger companies such as this one.
They have to treat every personnel with respect down to the last people regardless of their
position in the company. I positively believed that the company lasted this long is because of
how they treat their workers. With consistently being innovative and micro-managing your
personnel in the right way in your arsenal as a company, success will surely follow and it does
works well with a company such as San Miguel Corporation.
Also, sustainability has been an integral part of this company. They implemented strategies to
lessen the pollution and wastes in the environment. One example is their returnable bottle
system wherein it provides income to the collector and washers whose livelihood depends on it.
III. Conclusion
I therefore conclude that San Miguel Corporation will be in the industry for a long time. Their
current knowledge and management prowess will be passed down onto the next generation of
executives and their immediate supervisor. It’s safe to say that with the combination of wits and
heart, San Miguel Corporation will remain as one of the most successful companies here in the
Philippines.
