Contractors

The type of work you are seeking to perform will determine which registrations are
required with the Department. Some work may require multiple registrations.

 General Contractor Registration


 Safety Registration Number
 Insurance Tracking Number
 Home Improvement Contractor License*

NEW BUILDINGS

1-, 2- or 3-Family Home


You must register as a General Contractor.

All Other New Buildings (excluding 1-, 2- and 3-family homes)


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Construction Endorsement
or register as a General Contractor.

ALTERATIONS

Adding more than 25% to the Floor Area (vertical or horizontal enlargement)
You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Construction Endorsement
or register as a General Contractor.

Adding 3 or more Stories


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Construction Endorsement
or register as a General Contractor.

Removing more than 50% of the Floor Area


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Demolition Endorsement or
register as a General Contractor.

Removing 1 or more Stories


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Demolition Endorsement or
register as a General Contractor.

Work in a 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-family Home or Condo/Co-op


You must obtain a Home Improvement Contractor license from the Department of
Consumer Affairs.

You must obtain an Insurance Tracking Number (at minimum), register as a

DEMOLITIONS

Full & Partial Demolition Work


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Demolition Endorsement.

FOUNDATIONS / EXCAVATION

All Excavation / Foundation Work


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Construction Endorsement.

CONCRETE

Placement of 2,000 Yards or More of Concrete


You must obtain a Safety Registration Number with a Concrete Endorsement.

*Home Improvement Contractor licenses are issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs.
