I like the front end of Acuras current TL. Its angular, aggressive and bold, all attributes I thought universally admired. To me, it signals a new Acura, one that eschews the traditional conservatism of recent designs from the Land of the Rising Sun. Acura is about to unleash a brand new TL this year. In fact, it should be here by early summer. Insiders are welcoming the revision, hoping it will rejuvenate the once popular sedans recently flagging sales, a malaise blamed you guessed it on the front grilles over-the-top styling. While Acuras drop in sales as it tried to broaden the TLs appeal is real, it pales in comparison with the massive shellacking Volkswagen experienced in trying to sneak into the luxury segment via the Phaeton. One could argue, with some veracity, that most of Jaguars recent five years in automobile sales purgatory had more to do with the incredible backlash against the ill-conceived X-Type than any stylistic limitations of the lastgeneration XJ. Even successful expansions are muted. Hyundais Genesis, despite being my candidate for the best new car of the millennium, has achieved only middling success on the sales floor. Lexus has also been floundering, looking for new markets to expand into with the sporty IS, the ever-more-Mercedes-like LS and, most recently, the hybrid CT 200h. Yet, without its traditional bread-and-butter RX, the company would be lost somewhere near the bottom of the luxury segments sales charts. Automakers try all kinds of ploys to thwart this conservatism. Naysayers will point to the Minis success with an aha-laden gotcha. Except, of course, that Mini was an established, if not completely iconic, brand before being resurrected by BMW. Mercedes-Benzs answer, Smart, has, despite a few fits and starts, floundered. Rolls-Royce has soared because the ultra-moneyed understood what they were buying. Even Audis recent march upscale was originally a bust. Only by going back to the drawing board and coming up with a plan that saw a slow creep to price parity did the brand elevate its game. Perhaps, thats the lesson then. You can actually move our perceptions only you have to do it in baby steps.
