Indonesia joined the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) to promote free trade among Southeast Asian countries. Some opinions expressed were that joining AFTA was the right decision for Indonesia as free trade is inevitable in an era of globalization, and being part of AFTA allows Indonesia to engage in free trade and keep up rather than be left behind. Others felt that free trade provides both opportunities to be a leader or follower, and by joining AFTA, Indonesia could choose its level of engagement and prepare to participate competitively.

After studying the fourth session topic entitled Free Trade Agreement and also read the
additional material, please give your opinion about the following issue. Indonesia is the
member of AFTA (ASEAN Free Trade Area). Do you think that Indonesia choice to
become a part of AFTA is a right decision? Why?

I think it’s a right decision, because free trade it’s have two opportunities we want be a
leader or we wan to be a follower it’s depend on us. Because In my opinion,in the era of
globalization free trade is unstoppable, if we can’t keep up then we will be left behind
but if we can prepare our best to participate, I think it’s better.
