Topic 3 Foundation Element

This document defines key terms related to systems administration including workstations, connectivity, availability, performance, distributed data processing, servers, services, and packets. It outlines three basic tasks for managing operating systems on workstations: initial loading of software and applications, updating systems, and configuring network parameters. Finally, it describes Evard's life cycle of machines which outlines the stages a computer goes through from new to retired, including build, initialize, update, entropy, debug, rebuild, and retire.

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION AND MAINTENANCE

Racquel L. Pula, MSIT

TOPIC 3: Foundation Elements of
Systems Administration
Terms you need to know:
1.WORKSTATIONS or Workstation or computer hardware
dedicated to a single customer’s work.
2. CONNECTIVITY refers to the ability of each element in this
system to exchange data with the other elements.
3. AVAILABILITY refers to the percentage of time that an
element or user gets in the total time of the network.
Terms you need to know:
4. PERFORMANCE is assessed by the nature of the DDP and the
obligations it supports.
5. DISTRIBUTED DATA PROCESSING a data processing network
where some functions are performed in different places on different
computers and are connected by transmission facilities.
6. SERVER is a computer that provides data to other computers, it may
serve data to system on a local area network or LAN or a wide area
network one over the internet.
Terms you need to know:
7. SERVICE is the function that the server provides, a service, may be
built on several servers that work in conjunction with another computer.
8. DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM (DNS) is the phonebook of the internet.
DNS translates domain names to IP addresses to browsers. So, browsers
can load internet resources.
9. PACKET is a small amount of data sent over a network such as a
LAN or the internet.
Three Basic Tasks in Managing Operating Systems on
Workstations:

1.Loading the system software and applications

initially.
2.Update the system software and applications.
3.Configure network parameters.
EVARD’S LIFE CYCLE OF MACHINE
EVARD’S LIFE CYCLE OF MACHINE
1. NEW - means a new machine or a new workstation.
2. CLEAN - computer with the OS installed, but not configured to
work in the environment.
3. CONFIGURED - a computer that is configured correctly
according to the requirements of the computing environment.
4. UNKNOWN - a computer that has been misconfigured.
5. OFF - Retired computer
EVARD’S LIFE CYCLE OF MACHINE

1. BUILD - during the build process, the operating system is installed

on the machine.
2. INITIALIZE - this occurs directly after built at many sites is
thought of as part of the same process.
3. UPDATE - the update at some point after the installation.
4. ENTROPY - the entropy refers to the gradual process of change
that results in a computer that has an unknown state.
EVARD’S LIFE CYCLE OF MACHINE
5. DEBUG - the bug refers to the process of debugging an
unknown machine and getting it back to specifications.
6. REBUILD - in some cases, a machine will need to be rebuild,
either because of some kind of problem or because the changes to
be made are so drastic, that simple updates make no sense.
7. RETIRE - this is the process of turning a machine off are
shutting that your computer, shutting down your computer.
