Basic Microbiology Tools and Equipment
INTRODUCTION
The knowledge of laboratory safety, major equipment, and basic microbiological techniques are
essential for conducting studies on bacterial adhesion.
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the experiment, each student will be able to:
a) know and understand the importance of tools and equipment in Microbiology.
b) demonstrate knowledge on the different tools and equipment in microbiology.
c) Know and familiarize the visual presentation of each tools and equipment in Microbiology.
MATERIALS
Laboratory Manual
Microbiology Notes
PROCEDURE
The tools and equipment inside the Microbiology laboratory
I. The Tools and Equipment
a) Identification of the different tools and equipment
II. Post Laboratory Analysis
a) Answer the questions related to the laboratory activity
III. ANALYSIS
a) Fill up the table with corresponding correct answers
Laboratory Tool/ Equipment Function/Uses Visual Presentation
Microscope A microscope is a common
piece of laboratory equipment
used to examine objects that
are too small to be seen by the
naked eye. Microscopes come
in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Test Tube With a Bunsen burner or an
alcohol burner, test tubes are a
handy container for heating
small volumes of liquids or
solids. A clamp or tongs are
typically used to hold the tube
by the neck.
Beakers Beakers, or test tubes, are
used to store, heat, or blend
liquids. Beakers have a spout
and do not have rounded
bottoms. They are cylindrical
with a smooth base and a
spout. They're also available in
a range of sizes.
Spatula This laboratory instrument is
similar to a kitchen spatula,
but it is much smaller. Spatulas
are lightweight hand-held
scooping and transferring
instruments. They can also be
used to apply therapies that
are paste-like. Most spatulas
are acid and heat tolerant,
allowing them to be used for a
variety of materials.
Magnifying Glass This scale, also known as a
newton meter, is used to
determine the weight of an
object using the tension of a
spring. On one hand, there is a
spring, and on the other, there
is a hook.
Burette This basic chem lab instrument
is used to deliver precise
amounts of a drug. It's
sometimes used in titrations.
It's a long graduated tube with
a stopcock attached at the
bottom.
Tongs While working in a lab, you are
often exposed to chemicals,
sun, and other potentially
dangerous materials. Tongs are
used to grip potentially
dangerous objects as well as to
carry hot vessels. Each type of
tong is made for a specific
purpose. Beaker, usefulness,
and crucible tongs are
common examples.
IV. CONCLUSION
There lots of laboratory apparatus that can help us on doing researches on different kinds of specimen
that can give us new knowledge. The most popular utensils and equipment used for conducting hands-
on tasks in a laboratory are known as laboratory apparatus. The experimental instrument you use is
determined by the kind of laboratory you are in and the experiment you will do.
