Count On Me Lesson Plan

The lesson plan aims to teach kindergarten students to identify and label numerical quantities up to 4 without counting explicitly by using the picture book "Count on Me". Students will be put into groups and shown pages from the book containing multiple groups of objects. They will observe the pictures and discuss what they notice. Then students will work with their partner to identify how many objects are in each group using their fingers or words. They will monitor which students can recognize small quantities without counting. An assessment rubric evaluates students' ability to identify and count groups of objects.

Count on Me Lesson Plan

Lesson Objective:

The objective of this pedagogical exercise is to foster in kindergarten students the ability to identify
and label numerical quantities in the literary work "Count on Me". As a result of this activity, learners
may observe and question various aspects of the narrative, leading to a more comprehensive
understanding. Students will acquire proficiency in recognizing 1-4 groups with ease, without the
need for explicit counting.
Procedures:

1. Students will put into groups of 2.

2. I will display a page from a picture book that has multiple groups with up to 4 things.
3. Students will be asked “What do you notice? What do you wonder?” Students will then be
asked to discuss your thinking with your partner.
4. Each group will answer “How many ____ are there? Show your partner on your fingers or tell
them how many ____ there are.”
5. As a class we will discuss how we can use our fingers or say numbers to show how many
things there are.
6. Give each group of students’ access to at least one picture book. “Look for groups of things in
your book. Use your fingers to show your partner and tell your partner how many things there
are in the groups you find.”
7. Monitor for students who recognize groups of 1–4 objects without counting.
