Drug Study! Final

This document summarizes a drug study on furosemide (Lasix). It is a loop diuretic that inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the loop of Henle and other parts of the kidney. It is used to treat edema associated with conditions like congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, and nephrotic syndrome. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalances. Nursing responsibilities involve monitoring for side effects and the extent of diuresis.

DRUG STUDY 3A

TORCELINO, Leah Mayrifil G. BSN-4F GENERIC NAME Furosemide (Lasix) CLASSIFICATION MECHANISM OF ACTION
Inhibits t Rapidaction potent sulfonamide loop diuretics and antihypertensive with pharmacologic effects and uses almost identical to those of ethacrynic acid. Renal vascular resistance decreases and renal blood flow may increase during drug administration. Inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption marily in loop of Henle and also in proximal and distal tubules. K Treatment of edema associated with CHF cirrhosis of liver and renal disease including neprotic syndrome.

Nausea Anorexia Diarrhea Vertigo Rashes Pruritis Hearing impairement Fever Weakness Dehydration Hypovolemia Hypokalemia

INDICATION/ CONTRAINDICATION
INDICATION: 1. Treatment of edema associated with CHF, cirrhosis of liver, and kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome. 2. Used for management of hypertension, alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. 3. For treatment of hypercalcemia. 4. Used concomitantly with mannitol for treatment of severe cerebral edema, particularly in meningitis. CONTRAINDICATION: 1. Do not use with ethacrynic acid. 2. Anuria, 3. Hypersensitivity to drugs 4. Severe renal disease associated with azotemia and oliguria 5. Hepatic coma associated with Electrolyte depression.

NURSING RESPONSIBILITY
Schedule doses to avoid nucturia and sleep disturbance. Slight discoloration of tablets reportedly does not alter potency however yellow or otherwise discolored injection solutions should be discharged. Give with food to avoid gastroinestinal upset, preferably with breakfast (to prevent nocturia). If given IM, temporary pain at injection site may be noted. Check vital signs especially blood pressure for hypotension prior to administration. Assess baseline electrolyte, particularly check for low potassium. Assess edema, skin turgor, and mucous membranes for hydration status. Assess muscle strength and mental status. Obtain baseline weight. Initiate Input and Output monitoring. Note extent of diuresis. Expected increase frequency and volume of urination. Report irregular heartbeat, signs of electrolyte imbalances, and hearing abnormalitites. Eat foods high in potassium like whole wheat grains, legumes, meat, bananas, apricots, orange juice, potatoes, and raisins. Avoid the sun and sunlamps.

Loop Diuretic

40mg/tab

GENERIC NAME Digoxin (Lanoxin)

CLASSIFICATION

MECHANISM OF ACTION
Increases the strength and vigor of heart contractions, and is useful in the treatment of heart failure. Increases the force of contraction of the muscle of the heart by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme (atpase) that controls movement of calcium, sodium andp otassium into heart muscle. Slows electrical conduction between the atria and the ventricles of the heart and is useful in treatingabnormally rapid atrial rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and atrial tachycardia.

SIDE EFFECTS

INDICATION/ CONTRAINDICATION
INDICATION: 1. Used for mild to moderate congestive heart failure 2. For treating an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation. 3. Adjunct therapy in shock

NURSING RESPONSIBILITY

0.25mg/tab
