CONTENT STANDARDS The relationship between the visible
constellations in the sky and earth position along
its orbit.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS Discuss whether or not popular beliefs and
practices with regards to constellations and
astrology have scientific basis.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES Observe that the position of a constellation
changes in the course of a night. (S9ES- IIIh-34).
SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able
to:
1. Describe the position of a constellation in
the course of night.
2. Explain why some constellations are not
seen at certain months.
3. Identify constellation that may be
observed at different times of the year in
the Philippine sky.
TOPIC Changing position of constellations during the
night and at different times of the year.

1. What is the position of a constellation in northern
hemisphere to southern hemisphere?
EXPLAIN An observer from earth will be able to see the stars that are on
the night side. The stars on the same side as sun cannot be seen
because sunlight overpower all the starlight.
During summer in the Philippines, the constellations of Orion
and Taurus are not visible at night. They will visible again as
the cold season begins. During this time, Scorpio will not be
seen in the night sky.
Constellation were associated with religion, they also have
practical uses. Before the calendars, people had no way of
determining when to sow or harvest except by looking at these
patterns in the sky. Ancient people developed a way to
remember the patterns by giving these patterns names and
stories.
For example, in the northern hemisphere, the constellation
Orion indicates the coming of cold season. The constellation
made it easier for them to recognize and interpret in the sky.
For example, Gemini is seen in the Philippines during the
months of April and May. Farmers interpreted the appearance
of Gemini as the end of planting season and it signified rich
harvest.

they were the night before. Your location on Earth also
determines what stars and constellations you see, and how high
they appear to rise in the sky. The Northern Hemisphere is
always pointing in a different direction than the Southern
Hemisphere.
In the winter, look for Canis Major, Cetus Eridanus, Gemini,
Orion, Perseus and Taurus.
In the spring, keep an eye out for Bootes, Cancer, Crater,
Hydra, Leo and Virgo.
In the summer, Aquila, Cygnus, Hercules, Lyra, Ophiuchus,
Sagittarius and Scorpius light up the sky.
In the fall, you can see Andromeda, Aquarius, Capricornus,
Pegasus and Pisces.
