Plagiarism is defined by Universiti Teknologi Brunei as:

Plagiarism is where someone attempts to pass off another person’s work as their own.
This includes: copying from another student’s work; allowing another student to copy
his/her work; copying from a book, article, or similar materials; and copying from the
internet or other electronic media. To copy without acknowledgement of the source (due
to insufficient, poor or no referencing of work) is plagiarism [UTB AOSR 2016].

I confirm that
• I understand the above definition of plagiarism
• The work contained in the attached document is all my own work except where it
has been referenced accordingly
• For coursework submitted late, 5% marks per day (working/non-working day)
will be deducted from the total marks, unless an extension has been authorized.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. This is an individual assignment.

2. You are given 10 days to complete the assignment. The assignment is due on 07 March
2022, 8 am. Your submission has to be made via Moodle by 07 March 2022, 8 am. Late
submission will be penalised according to the University’s assessment policy.
3. The assignment consists of four (4) questions, please attempt and answer all four (4)
questions.
4. You are free to submit a typed answer or hand-written answer. You need to submit your
solution in a single Word or pdf document. To do that you may need to insert photos of
handwritten material within the document. Please do not submit any other file.
5. In emergency only, if you cannot submit your solution via Moodle before the due date,
then you should email the solution to your lecturer <peiqin.ng@utb.edu.bn> as soon as
possible with an explanation.
6. The submission has to be accompanied with a signed declaration on the cover sheet.
7. For any questions, please contact Dr Wendy Ng <peiqin.ng@utb.edu.bn>.
8. This assessment is worth 15% of the module. There are four questions: Q1 worth 50
marks, Q2 worth 5 marks, Q3 worth 15 marks and Q4 worth 30 marks, making a total of
100 marks.
9. A general marking rubric is given on page 3.

ASSIGNMENT 1

Answer ALL questions.

Question 1
A distillation column has the following specifications:
▪ Length of cylindrical section = 37 m
▪ Internal diameter = 1.5 m
▪ Heads, standard ellipsoidal
▪ 50 sieve plates
▪ Nozzles: feed, at midpoint, 50 mm inside diameter
vapor out, 0.7 m below top of cylindrical section, 250 mm inside diameter
bottom product, center of vessel head, 50 mm inside diameter
reflux return, 1.0 m below top of cylindrical section, 50 mm inside diameter
▪ Two 0.6 m diameter access ports (manholes) situated 1.0 m above the bottom and 1.5
m below the top of the column
▪ Support skirt height 2.5 m
▪ Access ladder with platforms
▪ Insulation, mineral wool, 50 mm thick
