JP5 Thu 111

Sam will attempt a stride version of "Satin Doll" without pedal at the JP5 workshop on November 11. He looks forward to seeing Tim there. The workshop will take place over Zoom using the same link provided in Tim's previous email. Tim and some others had sent information about what music they plan to play. Tim asked if Sam, Kyoko, and James plan to join the workshop.

Hi All,
Hi All,

Hope you are all well and have enjoyed the summer… I’m just off for a late
‘holiday’ in the North of England, back on 20 September.

At the last JP5 meeting I think we agreed to make DUKE ELLINGTON the
focus of next term’s classes. He actually wrote 100s of tunes, so I suggest
choosing from this list:

Prelude to a Kiss
In A Sentimental Mood (arrangement in EJP1)
Satin Doll
Sophisticated Lady
Come Sunday (arrangement in ‘Jazz Latin & Modern Collection’)
Don’t Get Around Much Anymore
It Don’t Mean Thing…

Let me know if you need charts for any of these. If you have my trio CD
‘Shapeshifting’, it includes versions of ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ and ‘Come
Sunday’.

For now, maybe focus on the MELODY rather than the improv. I suggest
preparing your tune one of two ways (or both):

1 – As a SOLO PIANO arrangement

Possible left hand styles: Two-feel bass, walking bass, shells, stride,
pseudo-stride.

2 – As if in a TRIO with a bass player

Possible LH styles: Shells, rootless voicings

In either style, don’t forget to explore different varieties of TWO-HANDED

voicings, eg:
Polychords, Shearing block chords, drop two, shells with 2 or 3 notes in RH
(4- or 5- part harmony, melody on top).

See you Thursday 22 October!

Best wishes,
Tim
