New Believer's Guide to Following Jesus

When you accept Jesus as your savior, your life begins to change in three key ways: through believing God's word, the work of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus' death and resurrection. There are four steps to receiving Jesus: confessing sin, repenting, believing in Jesus, receiving Him personally, and following Him daily. When you do this, you are fully accepted by God, forgiven, made new, and become His adopted child with eternal life. Understanding what Jesus did helps you realize your need for God, comprehend His love and sacrifice, and repent from sin as a follower of Christ.

WEEK ONE:
BECOMING A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST
When you make a personal decision to accept Jesus as your Saviour, your life
begins to change. Three ways God changes our lives is:
• By believing in the Word of God. (John 3:5; Ephesians 5:26 and 1 Peter
1:23-25)
• By the work of the Spirit of God. (John 3:5)
• By the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on our behalf. (John 3:14-16)

4 Steps you take when receiving Jesus:

STEP 1: Confess your sin. (1 John 1:9)
STEP 2: Repent (turn away) from your sin. (Luke 13:3)
STEP 3: Believe in Jesus. (Acts 16:30-31
STEP 4: Receive Jesus personally. (John 1:12-13)
STEP 5: Follow Jesus daily. (Matthew 4:19)

When you make this decision and have followed these 4 important steps, you:
• Are fully accepted by God (Ephesians 1:6)
• Are forgiven (Acts 10:43)
• Become a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17)
• Are an adopted son or daughter and heir of God (Romans 8:15-17)
• Have eternal life (John 3:16)

What happens when you follow Christ?

When you give your life to Christ your perspective of life and eternity changes.
Some people don’t always understand it, it takes a while for things to become
clear.
1. YOU REALISE YOUR NEED FOR GOD
You realize this because you want to start living differently. Your thoughts and
habits are challenged as well as your perspective on money, time and talents.
You start to want to use your time, money, and talents on things that now will
4

please God. Your thoughts become more conscious to become purer than
they were before.

2. YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT JESUS DID

Jesus died on the cross so that we won’t be de ned by our sin and separated
from God any longer. When we understand the beauty of what Jesus did for
us by sacri cing His own life so that we won’t have to perish, our hearts
change. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we
might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
We begin to understand the grace we have received, the eternal life we are
promised, and the forgiveness we now have access to. When we understand
what Jesus did for us we can acknowledge and feel the love God has for us.
The Bible says,  “you see, at the right time, when we were still powerless,
Christ died for the ungodly… God demonstrates His own love for us in this -
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8)

3. YOU REPENT FROM SIN

When you give your life to live for God, you repent. One of the rst steps in
becoming a follower of Christ is praying to God and asking Him to forgive you
of your sin and turning away from that sin. As a follower we don’t just do it
once and then never ask for forgiveness again, it is a lifestyle. As we live our
lives we see that each day we may stumble but the beautiful part of God’s
grace is that we are always welcomed to repentance, acknowledging our sin,
getting up again and doing it better next time.

4. YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT

When following Christ, there is a need to want to be part of something bigger.
That is why we have our church family, it’s a place to be an active part of
God’s family with other believers.
Next steps after making your commitment:
• Become a member of your local church.
• Serve and get involved in the life of the church.

5
fi

fi

fi

• Pray and read your Bible daily, growing deeper in His Word.
• Make your faith public - get baptised.
• Pray to be lled with the Holy Spirit.
You come to a place of understanding of what your need is, is a result of sin.
You then recognise that Jesus died for you to bring you into a loving
relationship with the Father. That is when you make the decision to accept
Him as your Lord and Saviour.

The Bible says that when someone comes to Christ, a change takes place that
is so radical that it can only be described as becoming new person.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation - the old has gone, the
new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
From then on you have a completely new life to live. You have been set free
from your old life, you are no longer bound by old habits and desires and
things that separated you from God.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.” (John 8:36)
You become a member of God’s family - and He gives you the gift of the Holy
Spirit who lives in your heart and is your Counsellor and Comforter.
“But the Advocate,  the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
name,  will teach you all things  and will remind you of everything I have
said to you. (John 14:26)”

WEEK TWO:
GOD’S WORD | THE BIBLE
God’s heart and desire is for us to live in His blessings. His Word, the Bible, is
not only a rule book but a guide to walk in the blessings He has for us. Here
are some things the Bible says about God’s Word:

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,

correcting and training in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16)

For believers, the Bible is the most important book in the world. We must get
to know what it has to say because, through the stories and teachings, we
nd out who God is and what He has to say to us. Without the Bible, we might
easily follow our own ideas, but the Bible tells us God’s heart. The reading the
Bible daily will work in your life in the following ways:

1. IT IS LIKE A MIRROR
As we look into it, it shows us what we are really like. The Bible doesn’t cover
up the weaknesses, problems, and sins of people, even the heroes of the Bible
are shown with all of their failures. It also re ects the potential that we could
be in Christ.

2. IT IS LIKE A LIGHT
Just like a light, the Bible does two things: gives direction and brings
revelation. The Bible is a light that guides us in our lives and reveals things to
us that often, God wants us to see. The Bible is the light we need to help us
through the times where we can’t see the way forward or know what God is
saying to us.

9
fi

fl

3. IT IS LIKE FOOD
Just as food is essential to our bodies, so God’s word, the Bible, is essential to
our spiritual life. It feeds us and helps us to grow spiritually, this is why Peter
said, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may
grow up in your salvation,” (1 Peter 2:2)

God will speak to you through it and you will grow stronger day by day.
Reading and understanding the Bible is not always easy at times but you will
need to persevere!

WEEK THREE:
TALKING TO GOD | PRAYER
Prayer is an important part of our relationship with God. Talking and listening
to God is essential in building that relationship with Him, and understanding
His will for our lives. All through the Bible, men and women spoke to God in
prayer, Christians today have the same privilege. Here are some things the
Bible says about prayer:

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be
glori ed in the Son.  You may ask me for anything in My name, and I will do
it.” (John 14:13-14)

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your
Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans,
for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be
like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
(Matthew 6:6-8)

Why do people nd prayer dif cult?

1. PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THE RIGHT WORDS TO USE
There are two things worth mentioning here. Firstly, although we should
speak to God with respect, no special words or language is required. This is
applicable in your personal life, public space, and even praying with other
people. Secondly, God doesn’t mind if your words are stumbling or not as
uent as someone else’s - He looks at your heart.

2. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY

There are different kinds of prayer focuses:
Praise God
Praise Him for who He is and what He has done
13
fl
fi

fi

fi

Confess to God
Think of your own sinfulness and tell God how sorry you are

Ask God
Think of things to ask for. Try to be speci c, praying for others and yourself.

Thank God
Thank Him for the way He is working in you and others. Thank Him for
answered prayer.

Praying for others

Lift others up in prayer and pray for them. Trusting God that He will work in
their lives because of what you are praying for.

3. I FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE PRAYING

This is quite natural at rst but after a few days, your discomfort will go as you
become used to prayer. Take a few minutes a day to talk to God, if possible
nd a place where you can be alone and undisturbed. Whether you pray
aloud of silently, inside or outside, it doesn’t matter.

4. I CAN’T STAY FOCUSED WHEN I PRAY

This is a common problem. Try keeping a little book in which you jot down
prayer items, you can then glance at it when your mind wanders. You may
want to start a prayer journal where you write out your prayers in a journal
and later re ect on answered prayer. If the situation lets you pray out loud
rather than just in your mind. Pray standing up or walking. Closing your eyes
is not helpful to everyone, especially at the end of the day.

5. I NEVER FEEL GOD IS LISTENING

God promises that He always listens. He loves to hear His children talking to
Him. Whether we feel like He is or He isn’t the Bible tells us that God always
hears. (1 Peter 3:12)

6. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRAY?

14
fi

fl

fi

fi

Just like you are talking to a friend there is never a set amount of time you
should or shouldn’t be speaking to them. God wants to be involved in our
everyday lives and so pray as often as you need to. There is no limit on time,
short or long when pursuing God in prayer.

7. WHERE SHOULD I PRAY?

There is no set place for you to pray, it is an intimate and signi cant
conversation with God. Wherever you are in your car, at home or at work; it
doesn’t matter as long as you pray, sincerely talking to God.

8. HOW DOES GOD ANSWER PRAYER?

God always answers our prayers. His answer may not be in the way we
thought it would be, in our own timing or what we prayed for exactly; but He
is always listening. The question here is: are we always listening to His
response? The Bible tells us that His voice is "a still small voice.” To listen to a
whisper you have to shut out the external noise and focus on the sound of the
whisper. The way we can hear God’s answer to our prayers is: to earnestly seek
Him through His word, spend time praying to Him by ourselves and also
asking others around us to pray for us, God also speaks through His people.
When listening, know that God will never contradict His word - this is how we
know He has answered us.

The Goal of Prayer

Prayer is to build a relationship with God and not necessarily what we can get
out of Him. There are times when God answers what you prayed for (your
heart’s desire) but the foundation of prayer is to build intimacy with God.

This week we have learned several things about prayer. Prayer includes praise
and thanksgiving as well as asking for things. It is important that we pray in a
humble attitude and not a proud or sel sh one. We have seen that God will
hear us when we want His will more than our own.

WEEK FOUR:
THE JOURNEY AHEAD
It is amazing to serve God and follow Him, but Jesus did say this journey won’t
be easy but most de nitely is worth it. In facing life’s challenges don’t get
discouraged when they come along. Remember - even in the worst times
Jesus is with you. Here are some things the Bible says:

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a
roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing rm in the
faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world
is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” (1 Peter 5:8-9)

When facing challenges, Jesus said that the road that leads to life is
sometimes narrow and hard, and so it may be confusing when you face
problems for the rst time in your Christian life. Remember, as Christians, we
don’t need to carry our problems on our own, we are to cast them onto Jesus
(1 Peter 5:7).

Potential stumbling blocks in the journey ahead:

1. TEMPTATION (James 1:12)
Everyone gets tempted. There never has been a person on earth who was not
tempted - although He never sinned, even Jesus was tempted. So you are in
good company! Remember temptation is not a sin - it only becomes sin when
you give in. After becoming a Christian you will still be tempted in areas of
your life. The best way to deal with temptation is by removing things that
cause temptation in your life. To battle temptation, you will need to equip
yourself with the Word of God.

2. DOUBT (James 1:6)

As a new believer, you may sometimes doubt having faith in Christ. The devil
creates doubt in our lives and so we need to put our faith in God’s Word. When

20

fi

fi

fi

you do face doubt, surround yourself in your church family and the Word of
God.

3. OPPOSITION (Matthew 5:10-12)

When you become a Christian, it doesn’t mean that all your friends will
immediately understand, Some may laugh or criticize or make life dif cult.
Jesus always told His followers that some would misunderstand or persecute
them. In some parts of the world, new Christians are in danger of losing their
lives! However, don’t let their change of attitude make you reject them. It is
not actually the things we say that in uence people the most but the things
we do. So aim to show love even to those who have turned against you. Be
encouraged, don’t be swayed by opposition and persecution.

MEMORY VERSE
“No temptation has overtaken you except
VICTORY OVER TEMPTATION

what is common to mankind. And God is

faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond
what you can bear. But when you are
tempted, He will also provide a way out so
that you can endure it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13

WEEK FIVE:
GOD’S FAMILY | THE CHURCH
One of the joys of being a Christian is sharing in the family of God’s people, the
church. Much of the New Testament is made up of letters to the churches, so
the Bible has a lot to say about the importance of church life and how we
participate in it. Here are a few of the things the Bible says about the church:

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave
himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with
water through the Word,” (Ephesians 5:25-26)

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and
good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of
doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

1. SHOULD I GO TO CHURCH? (Hebrews 10:25)

Yes, it is important. Although every Christian is a member of God’s church in
the big sense, we should also be a member of a local church. A church
meeting lets you meet other Christians, people that may be in a similar
circumstance to you, or that have been where you are and can encourage
you. Also, sometimes the Bible can be dif cult to understand. A pastor is
educated in Biblical teaching and is there to help you understand the
message in the scriptures and can guide you in how to apply it in your life. In
church, people share their experiences in life and how they came to know
Jesus. Even your own testimony can help others In their walk with Jesus.

2. WHICH CHURCH SHOULD I JOIN?

You may already belong to a church, but if you are trying to decide which to
join, join a church that helps you grow spiritually. Find a church that helps you
feed on God’s word, the Bible. Lots of activity is not as important as spiritual
24

fi

life and growth, which comes from spiritual feeding. Also, join a church that
welcomes you and provides you with Christian friendship. In the Bible, the
church is described as being like a body, a family, etc. each picture
emphasises the relationship of individuals. Christians need each other.
Don’t expect to nd a perfect church, and don’t keep changing from one
church to another.

3. HOW SHOULD I BEHAVE IN CHURCH?

• Be enthusiastic and encouraging.
• Attend the services regularly.
• Take friends along.
• Get to know the leaders.
• Join a life group
• Get involved
The Bible tells us to encourage one another.

MEMORY VERSE
ENCOURAGING ONE ANOTHER

“And let us consider how we may spur one

another on toward love and good deeds, not

WEEK SIX:
USING GOD’S GIFTS | SERVICE
As Christians to serve God is a tremendous privilege. The ways we can serve
are almost limitless, each Christian's contribution is just as important as that
of someone else’s. Here are some things the Bible says:

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your
good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

“Do nothing out of sel sh ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility

value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each
of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another,
have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:” (Philippians 2:3-5)

A natural response to salvation is wanting to serve God. God has gifted each
one of us is to be an important part of His body (His church), our outworking of
this is in whatever we do, we do it for Him.

We can serve God in our personal life, local church, and community
outreaches.

There are many areas in which Christians can be used by God. But whatever
your gifts and abilities, there are some areas in which we are called to share
with others.

Called to share by:

1. WITNESSING (Mark 15:15-16)
The power of your testimony is a wonderful tool to tell people about your
relationship with God and how God has changed your life forever.
Everyday there are opportunities to tell your friends, family, and those
you work or study with what has happened to you. Sometimes this will
be easy and sometimes dif cult, but Jesus has promised to be with us
28

fi

fi

when we do. Take the opportunity to invite friends to church and events
where they too can hear the good news about Jesus. Of course, you
won’t always know the answers to the questions they ask, but don’t let
that worry you. Those who have been Christians longer than you have
will be able to help you.

Above all, let others see what Jesus has done for you by the love you show
them and the way you live.

2. SHARING WHAT WE HAVE (Hebrews 13:16)

As a believer, everything you have has been given to you by God and so
belongs to Him. Set aside 10% of your income to give to the Lord as part
of your service, you can do this through giving/tithing at your church.

Remember we serve the Lord, the greatest reward of all will be to hear Jesus
Himself say one day: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

MEMORY VERSE
