A CHRISTIAN IS:
Any man, woman or child who, as a lost sinner, turns to God and
receives Jesus Christ as their personal saviour, who surrenders
WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his
name, he gave the right to become children of God— children
born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a
husband’s will, but born of God.”
1 John 1:12-13
fi
WEEK ONE:
BECOMING A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST
When you make a personal decision to accept Jesus as your Saviour, your life
begins to change. Three ways God changes our lives is:
• By believing in the Word of God. (John 3:5; Ephesians 5:26 and 1 Peter
1:23-25)
• By the work of the Spirit of God. (John 3:5)
• By the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on our behalf. (John 3:14-16)
When you make this decision and have followed these 4 important steps, you:
• Are fully accepted by God (Ephesians 1:6)
• Are forgiven (Acts 10:43)
• Become a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17)
• Are an adopted son or daughter and heir of God (Romans 8:15-17)
• Have eternal life (John 3:16)
please God. Your thoughts become more conscious to become purer than
they were before.
5
fi
fi
fi
• Pray and read your Bible daily, growing deeper in His Word.
• Make your faith public - get baptised.
• Pray to be lled with the Holy Spirit.
You come to a place of understanding of what your need is, is a result of sin.
You then recognise that Jesus died for you to bring you into a loving
relationship with the Father. That is when you make the decision to accept
Him as your Lord and Saviour.
The Bible says that when someone comes to Christ, a change takes place that
is so radical that it can only be described as becoming new person.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation - the old has gone, the
new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
From then on you have a completely new life to live. You have been set free
from your old life, you are no longer bound by old habits and desires and
things that separated you from God.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.” (John 8:36)
You become a member of God’s family - and He gives you the gift of the Holy
Spirit who lives in your heart and is your Counsellor and Comforter.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have
said to you. (John 14:26)”

WEEK TWO:
GOD’S WORD | THE BIBLE
God’s heart and desire is for us to live in His blessings. His Word, the Bible, is
not only a rule book but a guide to walk in the blessings He has for us. Here
are some things the Bible says about God’s Word:
For believers, the Bible is the most important book in the world. We must get
to know what it has to say because, through the stories and teachings, we
nd out who God is and what He has to say to us. Without the Bible, we might
easily follow our own ideas, but the Bible tells us God’s heart. The reading the
Bible daily will work in your life in the following ways:
1. IT IS LIKE A MIRROR
As we look into it, it shows us what we are really like. The Bible doesn’t cover
up the weaknesses, problems, and sins of people, even the heroes of the Bible
are shown with all of their failures. It also re ects the potential that we could
be in Christ.
2. IT IS LIKE A LIGHT
Just like a light, the Bible does two things: gives direction and brings
revelation. The Bible is a light that guides us in our lives and reveals things to
us that often, God wants us to see. The Bible is the light we need to help us
through the times where we can’t see the way forward or know what God is
saying to us.
9
fi
fl
3. IT IS LIKE FOOD
Just as food is essential to our bodies, so God’s word, the Bible, is essential to
our spiritual life. It feeds us and helps us to grow spiritually, this is why Peter
said, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may
grow up in your salvation,” (1 Peter 2:2)
God will speak to you through it and you will grow stronger day by day.
Reading and understanding the Bible is not always easy at times but you will
need to persevere!

WEEK THREE:
TALKING TO GOD | PRAYER
Prayer is an important part of our relationship with God. Talking and listening
to God is essential in building that relationship with Him, and understanding
His will for our lives. All through the Bible, men and women spoke to God in
prayer, Christians today have the same privilege. Here are some things the
Bible says about prayer:
“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be
glori ed in the Son. You may ask me for anything in My name, and I will do
it.” (John 14:13-14)
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your
Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans,
for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be
like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
(Matthew 6:6-8)

Just like you are talking to a friend there is never a set amount of time you
should or shouldn’t be speaking to them. God wants to be involved in our
everyday lives and so pray as often as you need to. There is no limit on time,
short or long when pursuing God in prayer.
This week we have learned several things about prayer. Prayer includes praise
and thanksgiving as well as asking for things. It is important that we pray in a
humble attitude and not a proud or sel sh one. We have seen that God will
hear us when we want His will more than our own.

WEEK FOUR:
THE JOURNEY AHEAD
It is amazing to serve God and follow Him, but Jesus did say this journey won’t
be easy but most de nitely is worth it. In facing life’s challenges don’t get
discouraged when they come along. Remember - even in the worst times
Jesus is with you. Here are some things the Bible says:
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a
roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing rm in the
faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world
is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” (1 Peter 5:8-9)
When facing challenges, Jesus said that the road that leads to life is
sometimes narrow and hard, and so it may be confusing when you face
problems for the rst time in your Christian life. Remember, as Christians, we
don’t need to carry our problems on our own, we are to cast them onto Jesus
(1 Peter 5:7).

WEEK FIVE:
GOD’S FAMILY | THE CHURCH
One of the joys of being a Christian is sharing in the family of God’s people, the
church. Much of the New Testament is made up of letters to the churches, so
the Bible has a lot to say about the importance of church life and how we
participate in it. Here are a few of the things the Bible says about the church:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave
himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with
water through the Word,” (Ephesians 5:25-26)
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and
good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of
doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
fi
life and growth, which comes from spiritual feeding. Also, join a church that
welcomes you and provides you with Christian friendship. In the Bible, the
church is described as being like a body, a family, etc. each picture
emphasises the relationship of individuals. Christians need each other.
Don’t expect to nd a perfect church, and don’t keep changing from one
church to another.

WEEK SIX:
USING GOD’S GIFTS | SERVICE
As Christians to serve God is a tremendous privilege. The ways we can serve
are almost limitless, each Christian's contribution is just as important as that
of someone else’s. Here are some things the Bible says:
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your
good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
A natural response to salvation is wanting to serve God. God has gifted each
one of us is to be an important part of His body (His church), our outworking of
this is in whatever we do, we do it for Him.
We can serve God in our personal life, local church, and community
outreaches.
There are many areas in which Christians can be used by God. But whatever
your gifts and abilities, there are some areas in which we are called to share
with others.
fi
fi
when we do. Take the opportunity to invite friends to church and events
where they too can hear the good news about Jesus. Of course, you
won’t always know the answers to the questions they ask, but don’t let
that worry you. Those who have been Christians longer than you have
will be able to help you.
Above all, let others see what Jesus has done for you by the love you show
them and the way you live.
Remember we serve the Lord, the greatest reward of all will be to hear Jesus
Himself say one day: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
