ANG3005: English Language and Literature I

Reading Response 2: Guidelines (7.5%)


Introduction

Throughout the course, you will have two opportunities to write a reading response to a work of
literature that we have studied in class. A reading response allows you to analyze the work by
examining the effect a work has on you personally and by making connections to the text.

Goal: To explore your personal response to The Piano Lesson.

Instructions

1. Part A: Choose one of the following writing prompts:

a. Berniece and Boy Willie have very different perspectives on how to live their lives in
a very racist society. Choose one of these characters. Find a quotation to show how
they think they need to live in their post-slavery world. Explain what the character’s
belief is and explain how this is demonstrated in the quotation.

b. Berniece and Boy Willie have very different ideas about selling the piano. Who do
you agree with the most? Find a quotation used by that character and explain how it
helped you to agree with the character.

2. Part B: Think of a connection between you and the play in one of the following ways:

a) Text to text: What other work(s) of literature have you read/movie have you watched (it does
not have to have been in English!) that reminds you of this story? In what ways? How did it help
in your understanding of this story?

b) Text to self: In what ways does this story remind you of an incident or experience in your own
life. Does it relate to something in your own life? How did that help you in your understanding
of the story?

c) Text to world: In what ways does this story remind you of in the real world (history, current
events, news stories).

3. Write your response journal bringing together your answers to both parts above. It should be
between 500 and 750 words and should flow as one coherent text.
Please note the following:

1. DO NOT DIVIDE IT INTO THE TWO PARTS. The ideas should flow easily from one part
to the other.
2. Try to answer both sections in equal detail. Do not write 100 words that correspond to part A
and 450 words that correspond to part B.

Date: The response journal must be submitted on Moodle before March 16, at 17:59.

Grading and Evaluation: This assignment is worth 7.5% of your final grade. Please see the
evaluation rubric on Moodle.

Format: All assignments must be in a 12-point font and must be double spaced. Paragraphs should
be used when discussing new ideas.
