Headache Types and Causes

Headaches are caused from various sources. They are not a disease or condition, but a
symptom of an underlying cause. Americans spend 1.5 billion dollars in direct care, and
another 1.5 billion in lost productivity in the work place. There are ten million migraine sufferers
in the United States and countless sufferers of normal headaches.

Pain is nature’s way of telling you that there is a problem. Western medicine recognizes
that headaches are misdiagnosed, mistreated and at best, the symptoms are kept in check.
(Remember that the pharmaceutical industry’s job is to treat symptoms: They have convinced
us that it is a normal and proper course of action to have a lifetime of drug treatments.)

Typical drug treatments include the first line of defense as over-the-counter pain relievers. They
offer quick pain relief, short circuit the pain pathways, stress the liver, digestive system, and
more. Other medications have stronger side effects and can reduce a person’s quality of life
with their particular side effects.

The key to identify the cause and treat the core issues, then the headaches go away
forever.

I find the Western Medicine groups headaches too broadly to be very helpful from a natural
treatment perspective. While western medicine identifies different types, they never get to the
cause. Worse, they treat headaches symptomatically; causing side effects to become apparent,
and often our quality of life suffers. One example is hormonal headaches. They are commonly
treated by giving hormones and anti-depressants, which can treat the symptoms, but do not
solve the problem, or get to the cause. Western medicine recognizes several types of
headaches:

Anemic headaches are from lack of iron from poor digestive absorption or excessive
menstruation.

Cluster headaches (CONGESTIVE) are vascular and happen in episodes or groups. They
often happen mostly in men and happen during spring and fall and can be related to allergies.
The headache is sudden, severe, lasts 30 to 60 minutes or several hours. They are usually one-
sided and begin in or around the eye and are stabbing in the eye, or pushing the eye out. The
pain is severe and may radiate to the sinuses, forehead, or cheeks. The pains can be throbbing,
burning or sharp.

Cold and Flu headaches are from toxins go to the brain; poor kidney and liver function. (Whole

Gastric headaches come from digestive problems from smoking, drinking, or other digestive
problems. Can be any digestive organ—stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small or large
intestine, and spleen.
A) Abdominal (back to front)
B) Colon (broad forehead)
C) Liver (right forehead, right eyebrow or back of head)
D) Pancreas (top of head pain, unable to digest or process sugars)
E) Stomach (pain over left eyebrow or left forehead)

Hormonal headaches occur before, during or after periods. There can be facial acne, urinary
changes, constipation, joint pains, exhaustion, coordination changes and cravings for chocolate,
sugars, salt, alcohol, etc.

Kidneys can cause dull pain radiated from the back of the head to the front. They may have
excessive urine.

Menstrual Migraines affect 70% of females and occur before, during, and after periods, and at
ovulation. Estrogen is the main cause; more women using birth control (containing estrogen) will
suffer with migraines. They are often one-sided (without an aura or visual disturbances). The
person is sensitive to light, sounds, noises, etc.

Migraines are considered vascular headaches because they change the size of the arteries in
the brain. 70% of sufferers have pain only on one side of the head. Some experts consider
perfectionists as prime candidates for migraines. Women experience three times more of
these headaches than men, and they usually occur between the ages of 20 and 30. The pains
are throbbing, one-sided and may or may not include an aura (visual problems). One third of
sufferers have visual disturbances a few minutes before the pain and can see a variety of
colors, lines or may even have a loss of vision. Hearing problems may be included.

Nervous or stress headaches come from poor adrenal function. (Wandering pains top of head
or nail through the top of the head.)

Rheumatic headaches are arthritis caused headaches. Lower back pains can cause pains
above the right eyebrow or right forehead.

Sinus headaches are pain of the forehead, behind the nose, or upper cheeks. They are usually
caused by sinus blockages, allergies, polyps, tumors, etc.

Tension headaches are the result of stress, fatigue and happen less than 15 days a year.
These headaches come on between 20 to 40 years of age. More women, than men, are
affected. The headache is often described as a band on the head with a tightening sensation.
They are located on both sides of the head and generally don’t cause nausea, vomiting, vision,
or hearing problems.

Other headache causes include alcohol, sleeplessness, overwork, infection, spinal problems,
organ diseases, poisoning, high blood pressure, head injuries, brain tumors, cancer, nerve
problems, and weather.

Headache Risk Checklist

You increase your chances of headaches by having any of the following items. The more you
check, the greater your chances are of having a headache.

Tobacco (any amount, chewed or smoked)

Recreational drugs (more than once a week, or a binge)

Alcohol (more than two drinks a week)

Coffee (more than 2 a week)

Black Tea (more than 2 a week)

Soda Pop (more than 2 a week)

Fast Foods (more than 2 a week – Watch the Video “SUPER-SIZE ME”)

Dairy products (more than 3 servings a week)

Pork (more than 1 serving a week)

Red meat (more than 2 servings a week)

Constipation (must have at least one bowel movement each day)

Stress – this is a HUGE issue (getting headaches after a stressful situation)

Medication-related (many drugs have side effects of headaches)

Physical exertion (too much physical work OR not enough exercise)

Diet for headaches is the same as for the general population. Our diet is the single most
important factor in headache prevention. Everyone should adopt Dr. Christopher’s
Mucusless Diet. A slightly less restrictive diet would be semi-vegetarian with no pork or dark
meat.

Stress prevention for headaches: Stress is the second most important factor in
headaches. When they say “it’s all in your head,” it may be true. Our feelings and thoughts lead
to chemical and physiological changes that can cause headaches by stressing organs, tissue,
chemicals, and body systems.

Homeopathics for Organ-Related Headaches

Hormonal-Uterine Headaches are indicated with pains that move from

back to front. The headaches usually occur before, during or after the
periods. There can also be soreness on the back of the neck.
Homeopathics for hormones include Sepia, Lachesis, and Cimicifuga.

Liver Headaches are often seen in connection with the right side of the
head. They are related to digestion and the emotions such as irritability,
waking between 2 – 4 am, and waking up tired in the morning. They are
mostly above the right eyebrow or right forehead. Homeopathics include
Nux Vomica, Iris Versicolor, Sanguinaria, Chelidonium, and Lycopodium.

Nervous Headaches come from problems with the nervous system and include agitation,
anxiety, impatience, nerve pains, and stress.

Pancreas Headaches are often related to blood sugar fluctuations and digestive complaints.
They can also be related to diabetes. According to some authorities, these headaches are
associated with pain on the top of the head. Homeopathics for the pancreas are Iris Versicolor,
and Phosphorus, among others. Headaches on the top of the head include Apis, Bromium,
Cactus, Carbo An, Cimicifuga, Hydrogen, Ranunculus Scler, Sulfur, and Veratrum Alb.

Stomach Headaches are often noticed above the left eyebrow or left forehead. Other sources
claim it localizes on both temples and from the eyes. Homeopathics for the stomach include

Homeopathy for Anemic Headaches

The pain is of a gnawing character, with a sensation of weight, due to an impoverished condition of the
blood, following hemorrhage or any exhausting disease. This type of headache occurs in those who are
suffering from nervous exhaustion, from overwork, from sexual excesses, from excitement. The patient is
usually pale, and has poor circulation, indicated by cold feet and hands, and fainting spells. In anemia
the blood vessels lack tone, and are relaxed.
Treatment. A warm fomentation to the scalp, with cold friction three times a day.
Tonic treatment, such as hot and cold to the spine, hot and cold over the spleen and
liver, daily morning sponge, if the strength will permit, the wet sheet pack every other
day, the salt glow twice a week, outdoor exercise, breathing exercises, and a
wholesome, nourishing diet, with abundance of sleep if possible. Fomentation to the
back of the neck and upper spine at bedtime. Apply fifteen to thirty minutes.

For anemia, use Ferrum Phos 6x (10 tablets three times a day) or Herbal Iron.

Cinchona is used for several types of headaches, especially from blood loss (heavy menstrual
bleeding), pain to teeth, and diarrhea.

Ferrum Met – especially for forehead, over left eye, throbbing, head aches every 3 to 4 weeks and
during menses.

Ferrum Phos – frontal headache or top of head, during menses. Head sensitive to the touch. Red face.

Arsenicum Album – burning headaches worse < at midnight.

Calc Phos – whole head, also in school children with stomach aches.

Cyclamen – migraines, visual disturbances, on forehead and left temple. During menses, menopause.
Depression.

Homeopathy for Congestive Headaches

In this condition there is congestion of the brain, either acute or chronic. Acute
is due to great mental excitement, emotion, crying, prolonged mental effort,
fevers, exposure to the sun, black tea, coffee, overeating, to poisons, to heart
or kidney disease. Passive is due to some obstruction, to alcoholism, heart
disease, and old age.

Symptoms – throbbing of the head, “as if the head would burst,” a splitting
headache, increased by lowering the head or exercise; face is hot and
flushed, head is hot, the eyes are injected with blood. In congestive
headaches the application to the forehead of small pieces of cotton cloth
wrung out in cold or ice water (cold compresses), and of hot water bottles to the feet, often gives partial
relief. Hot, dry flannels, a hot back of salt or hops, or a hot water bottle lessen the pain in neuralgic and
catarrhal headaches.

Keep quiet and away from the light; eat simple food; keep the bowels open. Massage and electricity are
helpful in headaches from exhaustion and nervousness; also beef and iron, and malt and cod liver oil
when there is general debility. Take a dose of the indicated remedy every fifteen or twenty minutes
during the attack; increase the intervals as pain lessens. Sleep is more efficient in relieving headache
than any drug prescription.If due to overeating, pain may be relieved by fomentations over stomach and
liver. If this does not give relief, drink freely of warm water. If the headache is due to great mental effort,
some form of vigorous exercise will divert the blood from the brain. If headache returns whenever study
is undertaken, the eyes should be examined.

A vegetable diet is often helpful to those subject to periodical sick headaches.

Homeopathics for Gastric Headaches

The causes are diseases of the stomach and bowels, and are very prolific sources of headache.

Hyperacidity of the stomach, fermentation, and poisons in the stomach from retained or decomposed food,
intestinal fermentation, constipation, expansion of the stomach, and prolapsed stomach and bowels are the cause
of a large share of headaches so common today. Increased acidity of the stomach irritates; dilatation of the
stomach causes retention of food, followed by decomposition, and absorption of the poisons by the blood, which in
turn irritate the nerve centers of the sympathetic system as well as of the brain. Prolapse of the stomach and
bowels stretches the nerves connected with the solar plexus behind the stomach and the fibers connected with the
semi-lunar ganglia and lumbar ganglia. A headache that usually comes on an hour or two after eating indicates
either increased acidity or dilatation of the stomach, or both. A headache due to prolapse of the stomach and
bowels is relieved by lying down, with the hips elevated.

A sluggish liver with retention of bile, or a slow elimination of bile

along with the feces, is another cause of reflex headache.
Headaches due to disease of digestive organs are usually frontal
headaches. The tongue is covered with a bitter, thick mucus, the patient
complains of pressure on the forehead, and of lassitude, his face is pale, cheeks
flushed, the breath is offensive, the bowels act badly, the urine is thick and
cloudy.

Treatment – avoid the causes. Next, steam bath daily or every other day of
from an your to an hour and a half duration then tepid (72º) wet rubbing of the
whole body and particularly washing the head with the bare hands. Body
compress and leg pack at night and enema for hard bowels. Light, very limited
vegetarian diet. As much walking exercise in the open air as possible, pure air in
the room. Sleeping with open window. Washing the head to be repeated if there is no relief, in doing which the
hand is to be dipped very frequently into water of 72º.

Bilious headache (liver involvement), when tongue is brownish color, bad taste in morning, upset
stomach, sallow (yellowish) complexion. Liver headache, use Bryonia – very irritable, angry. As if head
would split open. Worse < movement, opening eyes, or stooping; better > pressure, closing eyes.

Gastric Headache Remedies

Antimonium Crud – thick white coated tongue. Nausea, indigestion. Headache and hair loss. Worse <

compress for ten minutes every two hours, following with cold (60º) compress, changing every fifteen
minutes.

Nervous Headaches
Pains in the scalp come on in periodical attacks. To this class belong all those kinds of headaches which
accompany menstruation, or arise from mental excitement and weakness; also those that attend hysteria
or hypochondria. The pain is at one time dull or violent, at another racking or burning; often ceases for a
time, and appears in fact, as before mentioned, fitfully. Pressure on the painful place or affected nerve,
and combing the hair upwards increases the headache.

Treatment – partial or foot steam bath in bed, duration

according to the patient’s wish (cooling the head frequently
by dipping the hands in cold water, and washing the whole
head, and neck), omitting if it does not agree with the
patient. Then should follow a lukewarm bath (88º)
particularly of the head. Enema when constipated. Plenty of
outdoor exercise, fresh air in the room and sleeping with the
window open. At night body compress and leg or foot pack
with wet rubbing of the whole body (73º) in the morning, also
wash the head frequently in lukewarm water (86º) with bare
hands, soft flannel or soft brush. Use Cola nut or Guarana
(stimulants) for nervous debility.

sharp ice touched the head or cold needles pierced it.

Migraine Headaches
Migraines begin about puberty or later, attacks all ages and both sexes
(females more than males) and is distinguishable by suddenness of its
attacks, sometimes the left, and then the right side, at other times the
front or the back part of the head being more or less affected. The
whole of a day, but rarely longer. In most cases vomiting takes place
when the attack is at its worst, after which the patient falls into a
beneficial sleep of several hours’ duration from which he wakes free
from pain. These pains generally return every three or four weeks,
unless they are cured or mitigated in the interval.

Symptoms – sometimes there are certain premonitory symptoms, such

as shivering, feeling of sickness, giddiness, incapacity for concentrated thought, irritability, morbid hunger
and yawning for concentrated thought, irritability, morbid hunger and yawning, etc, next – violent, boring,
pressing, bursting and heavy or dull pains, located in any part of the head; the sense of hearing and sight
is extremely delicate, on which account the patient in order to avoid sensuous impressions as much as
possible, prefers to be in a dark, quiet room. Bodily and mental debility, depression, indifference, feeling
of sickness, spasmodic yawning, and even cold shivers are also present. The affected side of the face is
sometimes pale and shrunken, the ears cold, and the pupils enlarged; or may be hot, red and swollen,
the temporal veins distended, pulse rapid, the white or the eye red, the pupil contracted, the eye itself
watering and painful.

The causes of this affection are as yet but imperfectly established; the fundamental reasons seem to be
disturbance and irregularity in the circulation of the blood, or rather stagnation of the blood in the brain,
and is probably intimately connected with some gastric complaint (stomach, liver, billet, etc) and with an
irregular blood circulation of the whole organic system. In this affection, branches of the fifth pair of
cranial nerves are involved. Dilatation of the stomach, auto-intoxication, disease of the sympathetic
system, faulty nutrition, dyspepsia, eye strain, heredity, mental and physical exhaustion, excessive meat
eating, and great emotions are all causes of migraine. It may also arise from anemia of the brain, etc,
from irregularities in menstruation, morbid condition of single nerve trunks, or general irritability.
The female sexes in general and young people are more liable to be attacked than other persons and
it appears that congenital predisposition may be a cause of it.
Treatment – a tepid wet rubbing of the whole body (78º) in the morning, and about four three-quarter
steam baths a week, followed by a lukewarm bath (88º) and washing and douching of the head. A
lukewarm hip-bath (80º) daily, duration of fifteen minutes. Body compress and leg pack at night as well
as enema for constipation, and as a cleansing, fresh air out of doors, and indoors sleeping with the
window open. Avoid feather pillows and strong drafts. Relief from the pains may be obtained by massage
and stroking the forehead vigorously with the patient’s eyes closed. For chronically cold feet apply foot
steam baths.
Migraine is also said to be soothed and cured by continually applying about five cold effusions daily
until no water laid on in the house a small watering can may be used for this treatment, and the spray of
water applied directly on the affected place. Several small cold enemas are given daily in connection with
this application as a cleansing for the intestines. To ensure a complete cure of the affection, this
treatment must often be continued for some length of time.

Homeopathics for Rheumatic Headaches

Kidney disease is frequently aggravated by a severe
headache, due to an increased blood pressure. The pain is
dull and associated with a feeling of fullness. This type of
headache is best relieved by the neutral bath at 93º to 97º,
or the warm pack. A constant headache may indicate a brain
tumor, or brain abscess. This headache is common in gout,
rheumatism, chronic malaria, and alcoholism.
Persons are affected with rheumatic headaches that are
otherwise not subject to headache at all. It mostly comes after rheumatism of the eyes, teeth,
gums, neck, or extremities, and there are no definite symptoms. It is a violent splitting headache
and torments the patient day and night. In rheumatism of the scalp pushing the skin out of its
place is productive or pain. The headache is generally increased by violent exercise, shocks to
the system, effort to stool, by stooping, coughing, and sneezing. It usually commences with a
sensation of stiffness and contracting pains in the neck, which spread over the whole head to
the brow. The patient is generally extremely sensitive to painful; the pain is also associated with
a distinct throbbing. The pains diminish at times for a short period, only to begin again soon with
redoubled violence.
The aching in the muscular (fleshy) and sinewy parts of the skull is of a racking, bursting or
drawing kind. It increases particularly with pressure and movement, chewing, nodding the head
or frowning.
Treatment – when the approach of an attack of this kind is noticed, an endeavor should be
made to perspire by rigorous exercise in the open air, steam bath followed by 77º jet or spray on
the head and warm head packing. Massage (the pains increase at first but afterwards gradually
diminish). If there is a congenital disposition, sweat cure must be repeatedly applied, especially
steam baths and a non-stimulating diet observed. Rubbing the head with the bare hand dipped
frequently in cold water should be discontinued till the pain has abated and be repeated if the
pain comes on again. A steam bath followed by full packs to be taken every day. Both must be
succeeded by a lukewarm (88º) bath with head effusions or douche. In the case of constipation,
enema should be given; also smaller ones for cleansing purposes. Frequent walking exercise
out of doors, fresh pure air in the rooms, sleeping with the window open. With this treatment the
headache will usually disappear within a few (two to three) days.

Rheumatic Headache Remedies

Bryonia – left eye to rest of head. Worse < from any movement. Sharp pains, irritable. Better >
from lying on painful side.
Cimicifuga – “headaches of drunkards and students,” menstrual headaches. Brain feels too
large. Top of head. Aching neck, lower back, shoulders.
Colocynthis – headache with abdominal pains. Frontal headaches. Burning in one or both
temples.
Dulcamara – icy cold body, dull forehead pains, depressed, feels worse from damp cold
weather. Confused, unable to think.
Merc Sol – skull feels to split as if head were tied in a bandage. Burning, stitching pains to the
teeth.
Rhus Tox – worse < from weather changes, cold damp weather. Buzzing, itching, throbbing,
restless, stiff. Feels as if brain was loose.
Sepia – nervous, uterine headaches that wander from place to place. Low sex drive. Wants to
be by herself.

Nasal inflammation often causes reflex headache which is
indicated by dull pain between the eyes and over the eyes. In
forehead sensitive to pressure, especially hats, sensation
remains when hat is removed. Band around head sensation.

One-sided from root of nose upward. Turbinate bones

swollen. Sinus congestion. Steam inhalation. Gelsemium –
band like sensation and soreness of scalp. General cold or
flu remedy. Feels dull.

Sinus inflammation just above the eyes from a cold.

Mucus from infection with blood.

Sinus Headache Remedies

Carbo veg – head feels heavy as lead. Contraction of scalp. Pressing pain.
Dulcamara – icy cold body, dull forehead pains, depressed, feels worse from damp cold
weather. Confused, unable to think.
Euphrasia – pressure headache with light sensitivity and heat. Bursting in forehead. Profuse
mucus discharges. Shooting pain in temples.
Graphites – dull, numb head. Has skin problems. Back of head to heck as if broken. Worse <
mornings. Especially in obese women.
Hepar Sulph – weight in back of eyeballs, swishing in head, boring pain into head. Head sore to
touch. Sensitive to drafts.
Hydrastis – neuralgia of scalp and neck. Dull pressing frontal pain, especially with constipation.
Iris Versicolor – forehead and eyes right-sided, nausea and vomiting of intensely sour or
bilious matter. Worse < rest.
Kali Bic – thick green mucus, sinus inflammation. Headaches over eyebrows. Bones of head
sore. Forehead and bone aches.
Kali Iod – pain as if screwed into head. Tense pain at root of nose. Scalp sore. Hair color
changes and falls out.
Medorrhinum – burning in brain, worse back of head. Head heavy. Pressure on top of head.
Itching, dry hair.
Merc Vivus – inflammatory headache. Band sensation, tension of head. Hair falling of sides,
temples. Oily scalp.
Nux Vomica – sick liver headaches, from dietary excesses. Constipation. Forehead extends to
the neck.
Thuja – left-sided of forehead or nail into top of head. Better > from looking upward or bending
backward.

Sharp pains temples. SINUS HEADACHES from sun, stooping, talking, throbbing,
walking.

#4 Ferrum phos
Frontal, anemic headaches, worse < nosebleed, dull heavy pain on top of head.
Bruising, throbbing, beating, with flushed face or fever. During profuse menses, sore,
tender scalp; worse < stooping back to front. (congestive [flush of blood to head] or
vascular) with red hot face, vomiting. Dizziness relieved by nose bleed. Forehead hot.
Temples, over eye, or top of head. Blind headaches, vomiting, red eyes.

#5 Kali mur
Headaches with a thick white coating of tongue, vomiting of white mucus. Sick
headache arising from sluggish action of the liver (gastric) due to lack of bile, frequently

#10 Nat phos

Afternoon headaches, top of head or forehead. Sick headaches with vomiting of sour
fluids. Headache upon awakening. Tongue has creamy deposit on back of head.
Intense pressure and heat. Gastric headaches with pain in stomach and vomiting of
sour fluid. Giddiness.

#11 Nat sulph

Extreme pain in base of brain as if crushed. Top of head hot. Electric pains. Pressure in
forehead, especially after meals. Brain feels loose. Over eye or top of head. Burning
and throbbing. Sick headache with bitterness, vomiting bile or diarrhea. With dizziness
or drowsiness. Vertigo, giddiness. Tongue has a dirty, greenish or grey or greenish

Headaches from nervous exhaustion. Pressing of shattering headache. Nape of neck to

movement, jarring. Better > from heat, sleep. Morning headache with chilliness and
nausea. Nervous headaches . headaches when small lumps or nodules appear on
scalp (lymphatic swelling). Frontal forehead, or hairline. Band-like sensation around
