The future of society with AI
At present, Artificial Inteligence or AI is giving a lot to talk about due to their awesome potential.
All of us can see examples near to our around, such as the situation with ChatGPT. AI develop by
Open AI, which can give to users’ different answers for a diversity to knowledge areas like Science,
Math, Business, even Philosophy. Their recent appearance and efficiency generate that millions of
people want to prove this tool to know how works. However, millions are approach of their
capabilities to solve their tasks in a way easier without make any effort to achieve their
responsibilities. These facilities that stay to reach of all has made me the question about the use
that we decided give to the technology. In some moments it seems that technology instead of
being an enhancer to the human performance was a thing that we being lazier. But too makes me
question what if we not have a correct use to technology, what will be the worst effects? ChatGPT
is being a sample not only of the enormous power that are develop machines, too is a sample to
the purpose that population prefers give, due to this appeared the question in my mind: In some
way society can use AI avoid harmful effects of itself? Both possible damages to people such as the
search to easy exits toward problems that require effort to people. I consider that society can
employee AI to obtain important results inside society always that maintain aware of the potential
risks that have this tool. Bellow I will explain detailed the possible risks to which will be exposed
society in case to don’t give a correct use to AI, my explanation will clarify the importance to be
aware to the impact that have this tool.
Body paragraph 1: Society need understand that AI are really effective, but it’s not perfect
First, we can say that humanity shouldn’t trust blindly in services that offers technology, due to
this are not infallible. Exist multiple situations in that machines can make mistakes in any aspect of
their functioning. An example is in chess, the machine or “chess bot” could realize moves illogic
like don’t defend a threat of mate in one move. Although are something obvious for some human.
Despite of abilities of machines to realize inhuman calculations is completely possible that have
some mistake. According to Brownell, (2021): “There are many different ways to build self-
teaching programs, but they all rely to the three basic types of machine learning: Unsupervised
learning, supervised learning, and reinforcement learning.” It depends of diverse factors the
probably to make some mistake. For example, the data recompiled, perhaps the AI don’t have the
enough knowledge to solve a certain situation, for this reason, take a bad decision and therefore,
make a mistake. But the benefit of this is that now AI know how to make sure to don’t fail. In
addition to, machines are really vulnerable to external factors. According to Tegmark, (2018): “All
this awesome new technology can malfunction and harm us, or get hacked and be turned against
us.” This shows that AI is not so reliable as we may initially think. If a person for different reasons
have knowledge to the functioning to AI and decide hacked some important AI for society a lot of
people could be affect. Is really easy that machines produce harmful to humans.
Body paragraph 2: The AI in the future can be autonomous, which allows it to act without ethical
restrictions.
When observing the progress that machines are making today, many individuals may think that it
would be advantageous to replace all human personnel with autonomous machines that do not
require a programmer to make adjustments in order to follow orders. However, failing to monitor
the actions of AI could have severe negative consequences. This is because machines could be
granted freedoms that result in detrimental effects on people. As they are not conscious beings,
they do not consider whether their actions are right or wrong; they simply follow given orders and
have the freedom to carry them out as they see fit. In my view, this could be more dangerous than
mere mistakes, as machines are intentionally performing a specific task. This does not imply that
machines are malevolent or intentionally trying to harm us. Rather, machines lack the level of
consciousness needed to recognize the potential harm in their actions. As noted by Piper, (2022):
“By “high quality,” he means that the AI is able to achieve what it wants to achieve; the AI
successfully anticipates and avoids interference, makes plans that will succeed, and affects the
world in the way it intended. This is precisely what we are trying to train AI systems to do. They
need not be “conscious”; in some respects, they can even still be “stupid.” They just need to
become very good at affecting the world and have goal systems that are not well understood and
not in alignment with human goals (including the human goal of not going extinct).”
We see that machines are nothing beyond a tool, even though they can be very advanced and
perform tasks in a way that a human being cannot even compare to, they are not thinking beings
and do not possess what would be a consciousness. For this reason, they do not share our ethics
or values, since they cannot interpret them, they only process information from a database. We
see that machines are merely tools, despite their advanced capabilities to perform tasks in ways
that humans cannot compare to. They lack awareness and are unable to interpret ethics or values,
as they simply process information from a database.
Furthermore, it is important to consider the potential consequences if AI continues to
autonomously perform an increasing number of jobs, including fields like music, art, and others.
This could significantly reduce job opportunities for individuals in certain professions. It is
noteworthy that the global population is rapidly increasing, according to United Nations: “On 15
November 2022, the world’s population reached 8 billion people, a milestone in human
development.” This means that more people require adequate quality of life, which necessitates a
significant availability of job opportunities across various professions. However, with the
knowledge that AI is more efficient, many companies may choose to replace human workers with
AI to avoid paying salaries.
Body paragraph 3: AI can be convert society conformism
Thirdly, the significant advancements in technology in recent years have led to notable
developments in various areas, such as entertainment, learning, and communication, making them
much easier than in ancient times. Nowadays, having everything at our fingertips and with
convenience does not push us out of our comfort zone. On the contrary, it makes it easier for us to
achieve our goals in an effortless manner, knowing that technology will take care of it. This
mindset is fostered in society with the emergence of tools like Google, the internet, or computers,
which can be further reinforced with the innovations of AI. The fact that people maintain this way
of thinking in their daily lives makes them complacent and does not encourage improvement. For
example, nowadays, with the advent of ChatGPT, millions of students and workers use ChatGPT to
streamline their work and finish their responsibilities faster, instead of focusing on doing a good
job from which they can learn something new to help them progress as individuals. Similarly, in
various sectors of society, this same pattern of thinking may be repeated in different jobs, such as
scientific research, teaching, developing new AIs, and other daily tasks. The biggest problem with
this is that the societal progress could come to a halt or slow down, as our lifestyle and basic needs
would be met, and therefore creating new functions for AIs may not be seen as "necessary."
However, this is far from reality, as indicates Tegmark, (2018):
“So here’s our choice, we can either be complacent about our future, taking as an article of blind
faith that any new technology is guaranteed to be beneficial, and just repeat that to ourselves as a
mantra over and over and over again as we drift like a rudderless ship towards our own
obsolescence. Or we can be ambitious, thinking hard about how to steer our technology and
where we want to go with it to create the age of amazement.”
As mentioned, we have the potential to create a better way of living for people, addressing issues
such as extreme poverty, according to UNICEF (: “more than 700 million people still live in extreme
poverty”, what we need to do is find ways to apply AI to solve these issues and not just focus on
the comforts we have.
In conclusion, the society can employee the AI for obtain relevant results, as long as it stays aware
of potential risks that have this fix, the truly problem of the AI it is not whether it can be harmful
or not, the problem is found in the use that we give. Trust blindly and let it solve every problem
that we have will be an irresponsibility, whether it’s for the mistakes that can have, and too it will
be a sad way to waste their truly potential to improve life condition of a lot of people that really
require. For ensure that their use will be beneficious is fundamental give an etic purpose with the
aim to guarantee human life in good conditions. Thus, AI will be a really big help to the society and
improve life of everyone.
