DESIGN THINKING PROJECT PROPOSAL
Title of the The Sustainable Art of Basket Weaving
Project
Empathize Inspiration / Purpose:
Basket weaving is a substantial source of income as well as
an important cultural component for many rural Filipinos. It
can be used for agriculture operations, food service and
storage, and personal goods transport. It acts as a unifying
force for communities bound by enduring tradition and
innovation. Also, it promotes cultural heritage because
indigenous materials are employed. Craftsmanship reveals a
person's capacity for expression and recognition of their
creative flair. Indigenous peoples' traditions, tales, and
wisdom were long hidden through their art.
Unfortunately, communities that produce baskets are
currently hampered by depleting natural resources,
widespread plastic use, a reduction of Manolo Fortich young
people's interest in the craft, and changing consumer
demands. The basket is an artistic creation, and weaving is a
skill. Due to the allure of contemporary living, the weaving
lineage has gradually decreased. Many students prefer to
buy storage or organizer kits online through Shoppe or
Lazada or at pricey malls, which is not a good choice
considering the world's current crisis. Working on this project
will allow us to not only learn about traditional weaving
processes and the relevance of how and why indigenous
people first devised and produced high-quality weaving's, but
also to share our knowledge and experience with others.
Weaving can be enjoyed alone or as a fun social activity to
meet new people. Weaving, educating, and inviting others to
participate all help create a sense of belonging and purpose
in daily life.
Define Type of Indigenous Craft: Weaving
Elements:
Hand-made techniques – This is a weaving art, so it
must be woven to make a creative yet functional item
storage.
Use of Natural Materials - Natural sources that are
readily available and significant to the team's
community, such as coconut leaves, bamboo slopes,
and sticks, will be used to weave the basket.
Functions:
Environmental sustainability – This project greatly
contributes to environmental protection, especially in
light of the climate change that the entire globe is
currently experiencing, because the materials that the
team will use to make this craft are sustainable
produced locally or are indigenous rather than made of
plastic.
Economic livelihood / cultural preservation - Primarily,
this is designed for an economical, adaptable, and
lasting craft that might be primarily accessible,
affordable, and available to all people. Not only is this
basket aesthetically pleasing, but it is also functional.
This can be used to as storage containers for food, for
stuffs at school, and other household items.
Alternatively, it can be used as a decorative
centerpiece, adding a touch of natural elegance to
people’s space.
Ideate Materials: coconut leaves, bamboo slopes, and sticks
Tools: glue, knife, scissors
Process:
1. Gather all the materials needed and prepare your
workspace.
2. Carefully remove the midrib of the palm or coconut
leaf.
3. Cut the unwanted ends of the leaf. Each leaf should
be at least 1.5 to 2 feet in length.
4. Cross two leaves in their midsection.
5. Put another leaf horizontally parallel the first one but
the orientation should be alternate when crossing the
vertical leaf.
6. Add another parallel leaf horizontally. Alternately
cross this third leaf to the vertical one.
7. Keep on doing until you achieve the desired size of the
basket base. Make sure to adjust the leaves side-by-
side to assure that the spacing is properly done. You
now have a woven basket base.
8. Seal the ends of the woven basket base using hot
glue.
9. Repeat the steps with another strip of the same
coconut leaves. Keep repeating until you reach the
top.
10. Finish and polish the basket.
Prototype
Test This project proposal will be handed to and presented to the
team’s CCS adviser, Mrs. Zandra Shellee Ordinan, in order to
gain approval to critique the team’s craft. This proposal will
aid in the execution of the team’s project.
Implementati Plans for the future:
ons
After the team’s CCS adviser approves their project proposal,
they will work on creating a functioning basket out of
indigenous materials. They also intend to sell it to a close
friend first to observe how that person reacts to their work,
whether it is good or not. By purchasing a functioning basket
built by the team, you are not only supporting a local
community or saving money, but you are also helping to
preserve traditional craft that has been passed down through
generations. With basket weaving, people can invest in a
piece of art that is both beautiful and meaningful.
