What circumstances gave rise to Hezbollah, and how did the group change over time?
Hezbollah started off as a group of Shi’ite scholars who were part of a spiritual movement. Since
no one was officially in charge, the group became a large umbrella for semi-autonomous groups.
Hezbollah is a big network that provides for smaller groups. Then, Syrian and Iranian money
came in, and some groups operated independently and received provisions such as money and
weapons. After, the group formed some more alliances with other Lebanese Shi’ite groups.
Hezbollah became a militant group once Nasrallah was part of the leadership.
Is Hezbollah a terrorist group? Why or why not?
Hezbollah started out as a social movement stemming from young Shi’ites that wanted to
resist Israelis. In textbook terms, Hezbollah is a group of political actors from the 1978
Iranian Revolution and the Shi’ite community of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah became a

Is collective punishment for terrorist violence effective?
I guess it is effective for those executing the punishment… I personally think the tactic is flawed
because it’s based on speculation. The destruction of multiple people’s property in hopes of
eliminating a threat is kind of redundant to me… If the goal is to ultimately protect people, how
is it helpful to make more people suffer? Sometimes it works, and people associated to terrorists
suffer the consequences, but destroying their homes is only going to make them believe in
terrorism’s cause even more…
What is revolutionary terrorism? Counter revolutionary terrorism?
Revolutionary terrorism is performed by an opposition group within a country. In other words,
“insurgents” or “usurpers” are those who commit revolutionary terrorism. In some cases,
colonies protesting imperial powers engage in revolutionary terrorism. Counter revolutionary
terrorism is when the government sponsored militia group fight back against the revolutionary
terrorists.
How did the FARC originate and operate?
FARC stands for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which started in 1964. FARC is
the unification or displaced guerilla moments within Colombia. FARC mainly operated in rural
areas, with the aim of bringing down the Colombian government. One might call this
revolutionary terrorism, where their goal was the establishment of a socialist government.
However, most of their funds came through drug trafficking and kidnappings. Their ideologies
align with revolutionary terrorism but their operations don’t.
