VDI Performance
Best Practices
How to solve VDI performance issues
A slow or in other ways poorly performing VDI can be a source of frustration. Luckily, there is an easy
do-it-yourself fix in most cases. In this onepager, we have created 5 best practices that are most likely
to lead you to a smooth VDI experience.
1
Open your VDI in the Citrix Workspace App,
instead of in your internet browser
Using the VDI in your internet browser leads to sub-
optimal performance. After logging in to your VDI online,
make sure the VDI itself opens in the separate Citrix app
by choosing that option when prompted.
If you are instead prompted with the option ‘download
Citrix’, you likely do not have the app installed. Do not
click ‘download’, but follow these instructions to properly
download and install the Citrix Workspace App.
Check if you have the latest version of the Citrix
Workspace App by opening the software center app on
your laptop (type it into your desktop search bar). If there
is no update pending, you have the latest version.
2
Check if your internet connection is good
enough to support the VDI
Using a VPN in combination with VDI can cause
VPN performance issues. Try using your VDI without VPN
for a better experience.
Check if your internet is fast enough to support the VDI by
performing a speed test. The recommended values are:
PING: below 100ms | Upload & Download: above 10Mbps
Search on Google for any speed test
3
If only Teams is performing poorly, check if
Teams in your VDI is HDX optimized
Check if Teams is HDX optimized by clicking the three dots
HDX next to your profile picture, then selecting “About”, then
“Version”. The grey bar will show if the optimization is in
place. If it’s not HDX optimized, contact the service desk.
To keep the HDX optimization in place for the next use,
make sure you log out of the VDI correctly at the end of
Sign Out your workday (learn how in step 4 below).
Regularly log off your VDI properly to prevent
4
a decline in performance
Close your VDI by clicking the X on the top right of
your VDI only if you plan to continue working on it
within a few hours. The VDI will keep running in the
background.
At the end of your workday, log out of your VDI properly
by double clicking the red ‘Sign Out’ app on your VDI
Sign Out desktop. If you fail to do this for a longer period of time,
the performance of your VDI will decline.
5
Make sure you are using the right type of VDI
for the type of work you do
Different types of work can require a different type of
VDI. If you use any heavy design or computing
programs, a generic VDI might not be sufficient. Check
if you need a different type of VDI here.
You can see which type of VDI you are currently using
after you log in through the VDI portal. The first part
of the VDI name is based on your location, the
second part is the type of VDI. (See picture above)
