WORLD WILDLIFE FUND (WWF)

WWF is a global organization that is doing all it can to halt the accelerating destruction of our
natural world. Yet it is no good being global if we cannot act locally.
WWF is an independent foundation registered under Swiss law. A Board of Trustees under an
International President governs it. Currently, the President is Chief Emeka Anuaouku. The long-time
President and now President Emerius is HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
Gland, Switzerland is the home of WWF International, the secretariat for WWF’s global
organization. Its role is to lead and coordinate the WWF Network of offices around the world, through
developing policies and priorities, fostering global partnerships, coordinating international campaigns

2
and providing supportive measures in order to make the global operation run as smoothly as it can. The
secretariat is under the directorship of Mr James P. Leape.
The WWF network is extensive: independent National Organizations exist in 27 countries,
including Finland. In addition, WWF has five Associate Organizations and 24 Programme Offices
around the world.
National Organizations raise funds and carry out vital conservation work independently,
whereas Programme Offices, as yet, cannot finance their own work. Progamme Office receive funding
from National Organizations and WWF International. In all cases, WWF’s offices carry out local
conservation work, such as practical field projects, scientific research, advising local and national
governments on environmental policy, promoting environmental education and raising awareness of
environmental issues.
Each independent office additionally contributes funding to WWF’s global conservation
programme, while all offices help contribute to an enormous pool of environmental expertise and
knowledge.
A specialist office in Brussels works to influence the policies and activities of the European
Union, while a second in Washington works to influence global institutions involved in international
economic issues, such as the World Bark.
WWF’s five Associate Organizations are independent non-governmental bodies that work
closely with WWF in countries where WWF has no independent office. The Associates promote shared
conservation objectives, but do not contribute financially to the WWF Network.
In all, WWF has offices in 50 countries, but it operates in nearly one hundred countries around
the world. WWF’s offices, field projects and friends all around the world are working as a team
towards an overall goal: to halt and reverse the destruction of our natural environment.

KOREA AND THE U.S

One reason that the cultures of East Asian countries like Korea fascinate Americans is that, at
the first glance, they seem so exotic. Everything most typical of the United States appears to be absent
in Korea. Superficially, at least, the American and Korean cultures seem to be complete opposites.
An obvious difference is the people. [48A] Koreans have been one nation with a distinct
language and culture for thousands of years. Korea is a homogeneous society of one nationality and a
few small minority groups, such as ethnic Chinese and Japanese. [48B] All areas of government and
society are controlled by the Korean majority. [48C] In contrast, although the United States is a
country originally with northern European roots, its liberal immigration policies have resulted in a
heterogeneous society of many ethnicities-Europeans, Africans, Asians, and Latinos. [48D] Minority
ethnic groups are represented in all areas of American society, including business, education, and
politics.
3
Other differences involve norms of social behavior. Whereas Americans pride themselves on
individualism and informality, Koreans value groups and formality. Americans respect and reward a
person who rises above the crowd. In Korea, on the other hand, “the nail that sticks up gets hammered
down.” Koreans tend to place the welfare of the group above that of any one person. The American
fondness for informality is evident in the common use of first names as a form of address, even (in
some cases) by students to their teachers and employees to their superiors. To an average Korean this
practice would be seen as shockingly disrespectful. Korean employs a complex system of honorifics,
and the use of first names is much more limited.
Despite these differences, however, these two apparently opposite societies share several
important features. Both, for example, have developed the arts of business and commerce, of buying
and selling, of advertising and mass producing, to the highest levels. Few sights in Korea are more
reassuring to visiting Americans than the tens of thousands of bustling stores, especially the beautiful,
well-appointed department stores. Both Korea and the U.S have become consumer societies. Both
people love to shop and are enthusiastic consumers of convenience products and fast food.
Another common characteristic is that both Koreans and Americans have always emphasized a
strong work ethic. Americans, especially those in business and in the professions, regularly put in
twelve or more hours a day at their jobs, just as many Korean “salarymen” do. The normal Korean
work week is six days, and many Americans who want to advance their careers voluntarily work on
Saturdays or Sundays in addition to their normal five-day work week. While the work ethic certainly
benefits both economies, both countries are also paying penalties for their commitment to it: increasing
stress and weakening family bonds.
Korea and the United States are different, yet alike. Although the two societies differ in many
areas such as racial heterogeneity versus racial homogeneity, individualism versus group cooperation,
and informal versus formal norms of behavior, they share more than one common experience.
Furthermore, their differences probably contribute as much as their similarities toward the interest the
two countries have in each other.
