VITRA DESIGN MUSEUM a building. The first

WEIL AM RHEIN, GERMANY like that is Vitra in
Germany".
- Frank Gehry

ARCHITECT

CONCEPT
The Vitra Design Museum's story began with a fire. One night in 1981. a single bolt of lightning struck the Vitra Campus in Weil am
Rein, Germany; setting off an inferno which reduced half of the campus to smoldering ruins by morning. In the wake of the
devast ation. Vitra wou ld commission a number of notable architects from around the world to contribute designs for buildings to
replace those lost in the fi re.
Fo nded as an independent foundation. the Vitra Design Museum is dedicated to researching and disseminating
desig, and architecture. Frank Gehry designed the Vitra Design Museum's main building in a Deconstructivist style
in 1989. he building's basic geometrical, cubic forms, which seem to dissolve and burst apart, are characteristic of this
style. With white plastered walls. the Museum is like a sculpture. It is also a re-interpretation of the "wh ite cube".
the idea behin, it was to showcase the works of art but keep the exhibition architecture in the background,
avoiding interact, n between the two.
MATERIAL
Gehry used his trademark sculptural deconstructivist style for the museum
building, he did not opt for his usual mix of materials, but limited himself to
white plaster and a titanium-zinc alloy. Concrete. steel and glass is
used. Curved metal panel is used in entrance tower.
Despite its modest scale. the Vitra Design Museum building
emerged as a programmatic work of deconst ructivism.
a collage of towers, ramps and cubes. Its
expressive forms are not arbitrary, but are
determined by their function and the
lighting.

INTERIOR
The spaces w ithin this design museum guides the visitors to a world of design and offers an
exotic experience by the use o different kinds and variety of space.Use of ramp, sporal
staircase. double height spaces makes in interior of this building unique. Different kind of
interior decorating objects. piece of unique furnitures, ligthing units are stored within this
architectural sculpture. Open space on the 1st floor gives the visitor a feeling of openness and
the majestic green view of the surroundings. A library is also added on the 1st floor.
LIGHTING
Illumination fixtures are precisely matched to t he characteristic basic geometric and cubic shapes
of the building. creating a sense of fragmentation that seems to dissolve and burst apart. The idea
behind this is to place works of art in the foreground. whilst putting the architecture of the
exhibition in the background. The vita LED RGBW luminaires by Brum berg generate an impressive
play of colors on the smooth exterior walls. Inside. the zinc-covered building has an exhibition area
of over 700 square meters.
Both natural and artificial lighting has been incorporated into this structure as per need.
