Laboni Society

Sayan Biswas has written a letter to the President of the Labony Abasik Samiti detailing inappropriate personal questions he has received from various Labony Estate residents over the past 7-10 months. Sayan does not know many of these people personally. In the letter, he provides examples of questions asked about his career, financial status, marriage, and mental health. Sayan finds these questions hurtful and says they prevent him from pursuing his daily activities. He requests that residents no longer ask him personal questions or make indirect comments, as it causes him stress. To,

The President,
Labony Abasik Samiti,
Labony Estate, Saltlake, Kolkata-700064.
Date:- 02.06.2023.
Subject- repeatedly facing questions about my personal life for the past 7-
10 months inside Labony Estate, from various members whom I don’t
know personally.
Dear President,
I am Sayan Biswas, son of Shri Subhash Ranjan Biswas, aged 35, from J-
1/5, Labony estate. For the past 7-10 months, I am facing personal
questions about myself from various members who showed excessive
interest in my personal life. I don’t know the names of these people nor do I
know them personally. I would like to bring to your attention a few
incidents which will make you understand the gravity of the situation.
Recently I was asked by an old lady from E-3/1, about my career and even
asked at the end “You people are so unhappy”. There is another person
from H-1/3, a block whose name I don’t remember as he introduced
himself as a retired manager from some bank. he recommended I get a job
as my father can die and I will not get the benefit of a pension lifelong.
Another member from H-1/1, Block an old advocate asked me to work
under an advocate as I am a law graduate and requested me to take anti-
psychotic drugs as he thinks I have mental problems. There is a group of
guys and one of the persons in the group named Aman Baid who is a
Calcutta High Court Advocate, enquired about my financial status and
asked me when will I marry. Aman Baid and his group cause disturbance
by asking such questions to me regularly. Even though I don’t remember
their names I can point them out with my fingers. In another incident, an
old retired central govt officer asked my name and questioned me that
“Don’t you work?” In another volatile situation, a labony gatekeeper who
is below my status with a monthly valuation of only Rs 7000 p/m (wage)
advised me in getting married as my mother has expired. He gave me
various justifications for why I should marry. I meekly took his advice and
on 29th May 2023 I responded to his advice in a very humiliating tone. I
returned his justification with my own justification that I am not attracted to
people of the opposite gender. Even my father knows it was informed by
my expired mother. This conclusion was derived after a thorough test by
Psychiatrist Dr. Partha Sarathi Biswas, from Manipal Hospital (then
Columbia Asia Hospital) when our family used to reside in S-2/6,
Shraboni Abasan. I don’t want to humiliate the curious people mentioned
above like that of the Labony Gate Keeper though I have the complete
right to defend myself with a very fitting response which they may not be
able to digest as they are more aged than me and did hold ex-official
positions in the past, this will not ditter me from an amplified humiliating
response.
These incidents show that people in Labony have an excessive interest in
me which is not good. Showing such interests and directly confronting me
with such questions is not legal nor such behavior is expected from such
people ethically from the Labony Society members. Recently my mother
died and I feel bad when such questions are asked of me. These things hurt
me and I cannot pursue my daily tantric worship of the Maha Bhairava,
Devi Nikumbala which I do daily. I am not bound to follow the social
norms in any way. Moreover, I am suffering from High Blood Pressure,
Blood Sugar, and Cholesterol and I am under the therapy and guidance of
Doctor Basak Banerjee. Any type of questioning or indirect gestures are not
conducive to my well-being.
I work or I don’t work is my matter. What I will do in my personal life is
my own matter. People of labony need not be so curious about my life. If
again such questions are asked I will not be responsible for my reaction
towards such curious people who use these things as intimidation tactics to
disturb me. My father has hinted me to give a fitting response to such
questions from anyone and requested me to handle the matter alone.
These will also include indirect questions hinting to me at something, hand
or facial gestures, passing hints, and much more.
I am writing this letter with full consciousness and awareness knowing
fully well the impact of such a letter. I am writing this letter with the
permission of my father but the contents should reach the ears of my father
as the letter is controversial in many ways.
My father once was humiliated by some people in Labony and he was
threatened that his son thus me will be physically abused. They even
challenged him that they will see what the police can do to save me. “Har
gor bhege rasta te phele rakbo apanar chele ke……apni ke korte paren
dekbo” My father does not have the guts to complain. When I asked my
father on what basis “they” said like that? He said that “they” don’t like me.
In my opinion “they” are a bunch of derelicts of Labony or elsewhere who
threatened me and my father and that too in my absence from them. “They”
also hinted my father, to sell our property and move elsewhere. Such
incidents show the malicious intentions of people in general of Labony
against me and my father.
We are the owner of a premium flat in Labony and expect to live in peace.
My prayer in this letter is that if possible people of Labony should not ask
me any personal questions regarding my life. Indirect or direct questioning
or hints or gestures will be dealt with a harsh form of humiliation from my
side which has been signaled from inside my dwelling who is none other
than my father. As a permanent resident of the labony I wish I have a
peaceful atmosphere of co-existence for many decades of stay.
Sincerely,
Sayan Biswas.
