5.1 - HDI Activity

The document assigns students to explore the relationship between GDP per capita and human development index (HDI) for 3 assigned countries. Students are asked to look up GDP and HDI rankings and values for their countries, observe a graph showing the relationship between GDP and life expectancy, and analyze whether GDP correlates with HDI based on the collected data. The document provides a table assigning different country groups for students to explore.

HDI Exploration Activity

The Human Development Index (HDI) has long believed that economic
measures such as the GDP cannot adequately measure standard of living,
happiness and development.

Watch this video to remind you of why GDP/GNP is still used to assess standard
of living.

Let’s really see if there is a correlation between Real GDP per capita and
well-being.

Explore your assigned countries!

You have been assigned 3 specific countries (see chart on next page).

Begin Your Exploration:

1. Click this link. Scroll down to find your countries. What is the Real GDP
Per Capita for each country from 2021?

2. Rank your countries from highest to lowest in terms of their Real GDPs.

3. What relationship, if any, do you notice about the rankings from Question
2 and the kind of economies for each country (developed, developing,
underdeveloped)?

4. For these same countries, explore the Human Development Index. To

explore each country, you must click on it and fill in the chart below for
each one of your assigned countries:

5. Visit this link. Click the title of the graph: “Income per person…” A list
should appear. Click “Life Expectancy.” Then, on the right-hand side,
unclick the countries that have been pre-selected, and check off your
assigned countries. Explain what you observe. Screenshot, copy and
paste your graph here.

6. Based on all the data you collected, is there a correlation between Real
GDP per capita and the Human Development Index (the things we value
in our society to bring us real benefit and satisfaction)? Explain.
