Selections in Photoshop

1. Rectangle Marquee

This tool will select a rectangle to square (if you hold down shift)

2. Ellipse Marquee

This tool is hidden under the rectangular marquee. It will select an ellipse (or a circle if you hold
down shift).

3. Quick selection tool

Hold down the mouse and drag to select an object. Use the plus and minus icons in the top
menu to add or subtract from your selection.

4. Magic Wand tool

The most important setting for this tool is the tolerance setting in the top menu. The higher the
number, the more pixels it will select and vice versa.

5. Lasso Tool

Select an area that you draw around with the mouse. It is hard to select speci c parts of an
image.

6. Polygonal Lasso Tool

Use this tool by clicking the mouse on the selection you want to make. Click around the whole
selection to select the object.

7. Magnetic Lasso Tool

Use this tool by clicking on the object you are selecting. Release the mouse and just move it
(slowly) around the whole object.

Use this when the background is very di erent from the foreground. This is what the menu will

Clcik on the eyedrop tool to select the background. Add to the selection with the “plus
eyedrop.” Remove from the selection with the “minus eyedrop.”
