Tsunami Causes and Characteristics

The document provides information about a tsunami member group and tsunamis. It lists the members of the tsunami group and then defines what a tsunami is, noting they are large waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. It describes how tsunami waves build in height as they reach land and provides characteristics of tsunamis such as their speed, retreating water process, coming in series of waves, and measurement on the Sieberg intensity scale. It identifies earthquakes and volcanic activity as causes and erosive beach damage as a consequence.

WHAT IS A TSUNAMI?
TSUNAMIS ARE GIANT WAVES CAUSED BY
EARTHQUAKES OR VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS UNDER THE
SEA. OUT IN THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN, TSUNAMI
WAVES DO NOT DRAMATICALLY INCREASE IN
HEIGHT. BUT AS THE WAVES TRAVEL INLAND, THEY
BUILD UP TO HIGHER AND HIGHER HEIGHTS AS THE
DEPTH OF THE OCEAN DECREASES.
· THEY CAN REACH 800 KILOMETERS PER HOUR WHEN
CROSSING THE OCEAN AND LOSE VERY LITTLE ENERGY IN THE
PROCESS.

· THE WAVES OF A TSUNAMI BEHAVE SIMILAR TO ORDINARY

CHARACTERISTICS
WAVES, THAT IS, THE OCEAN DRAGS THE WATER IN BEFORE THE
WAVE BREAKS. IN TSUNAMIS, THE RETRACTION PROCESS TAKES
BETWEEN 5 OR 10 MINUTES BEFORE BREAKING, BUT IT IS HAS
REGISTERED CASES THAT HAVE TAKEN HOURS.

· THE TSUNAMI USUALLY COMES IN A SERIES OF SEVERAL

WAVES, AFTER THE FIRST, ALTHOUGH IT IS THE MOST INTENSE IN
MOST CASES, THE FOLLOWING ONES CAN BE CONSIDERABLY
DANGEROUS.

· TSUNAMI INTENSITY IS COMMONLY MEASURED USING THE

MODIFIED SIEBERG SCALE THAT RANGES FROM I TO VI, FROM VERY
MILD TO DISASTROUS.
CAUSES
TSUNAMIS ARE CAUSED BY STRONG UNDERSEA
EARTHQUAKES.
