Marshmallow

Marshmallow is a baby
bonnet worked from the
border up to the crown,
featuring decorative broken
rib that matches the garter
stitch. Simple short row
decreases form the shaping
of the back of the bonnet.
The tie straps are knitted
using the i-cord technique
and are attached to the main
body of the bonnet. Pom
poms are then made and
sewn on.

MAIN BODY
The main body of the bonnet is knitted flat on 3.75mm needles.

Using Old Norwegian Cast On, cast on 64 (80) 104 (128) sts.

To achieve a neat edge, you will always slip the last stitch purlwise with the yarn in
front.

Broken Rib

Row 1 (WS): purl

Row 2 (RS): (k2, p2) to end

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 a total of 4 (6) 6 (8) times.

Row 1 (WS): knit

Row 2 (RS): knit

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until work measures 8.25cm (10cm) 11.5cm (13.5cm) from the cast
on edge, ending after a WS row.

CROWN SHAPING
Your work will now be divided into 3 sections (left side, middle, right side) and you will
be knitting up side stitches with the central panel stitches to shape the back of the
bonnet.

Row 1 (RS): Knit 42 (52) 68 (84), p2tog, turn

Row 2 (WS): sl1, k20 (24) 32 (40), k2tog, turn

Row 3 (RS): sl1, k to one stitch before the gap, p2tog, turn

Row 4 (WS): sl1, k to one stitch before the gap, k2tog, turn

Repeat Rows 3 & 4 a total of 10 (11) 15 (18) times.

Row 1 (RS): sl1, knit to one st before the gap, p3tog, turn

Row 2 (WS): sl1, purl to one st before the gap, k3tog, turn

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until no side panel stitches remain (for all sizes) – if you end up
with an odd number at the end, p2tog and k2tog on the last row instead.

Cast off using the Icelandic bind off.

I-CORD TIES
With 2.75mm needles, cast on 3 stitches.

Knit i-cord until it measures 26 (30) 34 (40) cm / 10.5 (12) 13.5 (16) in. Bind off, leaving a
long tail for sewing.

Repeat for the second tie.

Using the long tails, sew the ties to the front corners of the bonnet.

POM POMS
Using the 45mm pom pom maker, make two pom poms, leaving long tails when fastening
them off.

Using the long tails, sew each pom pom to the bonnet, placing it just at the start of the
crown decreases. Trim pom poms to shape. I like to (very) gently brush mine to fluff them up!

Weave in all ends.
