- Yes, that’s right.
- And your husband is – or, I should say, was – Mr James
Carrington, who died two days ago at your home, 180
Portland Street.
Play 
- Yes, James was my husband.
 
- Doctors have carefully studied your husband’s body. They
have found that someone murdered your husband.
- No! How?
- A knife in his heart. We believe that he was sleeping at
1 the time. He had taken sleeping pills.
- I can’t believe it!
- It’s true. So, Mrs Carrington, where were you on the day
of his death, the fifth of June?
- I was staying with a friend, in Stanhope. It’s a village,
about 50 miles from my home. My friend had been in
hospital. I was looking after her. I was there from the 3rd
Play  of June until yesterday, when I heard the news.
  - Your friend’s name is…?
- Joanna Miller.
- Joanna Miller. And on the afternoon of the 5th June –
what were you doing?
- I went into the city. Joanna was feeling tired and ill. I
2
went to buy her some tea. Here, I have the receipts.
- Did you go there alone?
- Yes, I did. By car.
- And did you also return to your house that afternoon?
- No!
Play  - Your neighbour, Mrs Box, disagrees. She says that she
  saw you enter your house. You were wearing a long
brown coat and a hat. She says she heard loud voices in
the house. A man and a woman were arguing.
- It wasn’t me!
- Oh? Then who was it?
3 - I don’t know… but, I believe that my husband had a lover.
I think he was seeing another woman.
- Who?
- I don’t know. But I have believed it for some time. I had
smelled perfume on his clothes, and once I found a
receipt for dinner for two people in his coat pocket. But
James loves – loved me, I’m sure. Maybe she asked
Play  James to leave me and James refused, so she got angry
  and killed him.
- Or maybe YOU got angry because he had a lover, and you
killed him.
- No!
- We will find the truth.
