Yale Identification by Serial Number and Year Comparison
All parts manuals are identified by the manual number and date of development or revision. In some cases only one
parts manual has been developed for a particular truck model, but in those cases where several manuals or revisions
of the same manual are available for a truck model, it is necessary to choose the proper manual by comparing the
serial number of the truck to the year of manufacture by using the charts below.
From 1940 to the present, there have been six different systems in effect for the periods from 1940-1957, 1958-
1968, 1969-1972, 1973-1982, 1983-1995, and 1995 to present. Below are explanations or charts that correspond
with these six systems.
1940-1957 Electric and Gas Rider truck serial numbers used the first two digits to indicate the year. For example:
Serial Number 421835 is 1942 and Serial Number 546798 is 1954.
Worksaver and warehouse trucks used the 2nd and 3rd digits to indicate the year. For Example: Serial
Number 141677 is 1941 and Serial Number 253798 is 1953.
1958-1968 All trucks built in this period use an alpha prefix to indicate the year of manufacture per the following:
H = 1958 AC = 1961 AF = 1964 AJ = 1967
J= 1959 AD = 1962 AG = 1965 AK = 1968
AB = 1960 AE = 1963 AH = 1966
1969-1972 From the years 1969 to 1972, blocks of serial numbers were used as shown in the following:
1969 136789 -171934 1971 184550 -201000
1970 171935 -184549 1972 201001 -214399
1973-1982 During these years, blocks of serial numbers were assigned to plants or models as follows:

Yale Identification by Serial Number and Year Comparison
1983-mid 1995 - During the years from 1983 to mid-1995, blocks of serial numbers were assigned to various plants
or models. However, truck serial numbers are not strictly sequential. This list of serial numbers is an approximation
of identification of each year's shipment to the field.

Mid-1995 to Present - The serial number format changed in the third quarter of 1995. The new format has eleven
(11) alpha-numeric characters and includes information that indicates the model, plant of manufacture and the year
in which the truck was built. Following is a typical serial number in the current format and an explanation of each
segment of the number.
Example: C813D11364W
C813 -Model family and design series. In this example, the C813 model code is a GP/GLP/GDP-LJ/MJ truck. The
"C" represents the current design series. When this model is updated, the "C" will change to another letter
designator.
D -Plant designator. In this example, "D" represents the Danville, IL plant.
11364 -Sequential serial number. The first production of a model series starts with serial number 01501. Note that
the same serial number could exist for another series model.
W -Year of manufacture. "W" represents the year 1999.
This serial number format must be used on all ITA reports, installations and warranty claims. The following charts
show codes for the manufacturing plants and date of manufacture.
