Narrative Text

The story is about a grandmother who asks her granddaughter to only cook one grain of rice for their lunch. However, the granddaughter cooks more which causes the rice to overflow the kitchen. When the grandmother returns, she gets angry and hits the granddaughter. Magically, the granddaughter turns into a monkey and runs away, unable to live with her grandmother anymore.

A Story from the Farm Yard
Two roosters were fighting fiercely to be the king of the farm yard. One finally gained advantage and the
other surrendered.
The loosing rooster slunk away and hid itself in a quiet corner. The winner flew up to a high wall, flapped
its wings and crowed its victory, as loud as it could.
Suddenly, an eagle came sailing through the air and carried it off, with its talons. The loosing rooster
immediately came out of its corner and ruled the farm yard from then on.

Mouse Deer and Mr. Crocodile


One day, a mouse deer was walking by the river. He was very starving because he hadn't eaten since morning.
It was midday. But he found nothing in the land but dying trees. "Huh... I hate this branches, I don't like it!"
Across the river, there was green grassland, with young leaves. 'Hmm.. it seems delicious' imagined the
mouse deer, 'but how can I get there? I can't swim, the current is very rapid?'
The mouse deer was figuring out the way how to reach there. Suddenly, he jumped to the air,'aha.: he then
walked to the edge of the river. He didn't see the reflection because the water flowed very fast. He dipped
one of his fore legs into the water. A few moment later, appeared Mr. Crocodile showing his sharp teeth. He
then laughed, "Ha... ha... ha, you can't run away from me, You'll be my tasty lunch!" said the crocodile.
"Of course I can't. You are very strong, Mr. Croco," replied the mouse deer frightened. Then, the other
crocodiles approached moving slowly. They approached the edge of the river.
"But, before you all have a party, I wonder how many your members are there in the river. If I know your
number exactly, I can distribute my meat evenly, “said the mouse deer.
"Oh...o, great, good idea! But we are a large group, I can't count it precisely," Mr. Croco moaned. "Leave it
to me, and I can make it for you!" Now, can you ask the others to line up, from one edge to the other edge
of the river? The mouse deer requested. Then the crocodiles arranged themselves in line from one edge to
the other edge of the river. The mouse deer jumped to the body of one crocodile to the others while he was
counting, 'one, two, three; and so forth up to ten. Then at last he arrived at grassland, and he thanked to the
dumb crocodiles.

paintbrush in his desk.
From that day, he used the paintbrush to help people. Whenever he drew the pictures, they became real.
But, a few days later, his master heard about the magic paintbrush and stole it. He drew a lot of pictures, but
they could not become real. He was very angry and asked some people to get Ma Liang.
When Ma Liang came, he said to him, “If you draw some pictures for me and turn them to life, I will set you
free”. The young man said, “I can help you, but you should obey your words”. The bad man felt very happy
and said, I want to Golden Mountain. I will go there to gather gold.” The young man drew a sea first. Then
the young man drew a golden mountain which was far away from the sea. After that he drew a big ship. The

bad man jumped into the ship. When the ship sailed to the middle of the sea, the young man drew a large
wave and it destroy the ship. After that, the young man lived with his family happily and kept on helping the
poor people. So the magic paint brush was known by everyone.

In the morning, the granddaughter would go to the market. Before she left, she asked her granddaughter to

“Please cook some rice for lunch. But just cook one gain of rice. It’s enough for both of us”
“Why grandma?” asked the girl.
“Just do what I said.”
The grandmother then left for the market. Later, the girl started to cook. However, she felt a grain of rice
would not enough for them.
“I think it’s not enough for me and my grandmother”. Then she cooked two handfuls of rice. Suddenly,
something bad happened to the rice pot. “OH, no! The rice flowed out and flowed until it covered the kitchen.
Suddenly, the grandmother came home. The girl explained what happened.
“You are naughty girl! Why didn’t you listen to me? The grandmother was so angry. She hit the girl with
wooden stick.
“Please forgive me, Grandma! The little girl cried and cried. But the grandmother kept hitting her.
Then an incredible thing happened! The girl turned into a monkey. The monkey then ran away and climbed
a tree. The grandmother chased it. From the tree, the monkey said. “Grandmother, I’m a monkey now. I
cannot live with you anymore. You are alone”.
The monkey climbed up and disappeared. The grandmother was very sad. She regretted what she had done
to her beloved granddaughter.” Please come back to me. Please forgive me, my granddaughter!”, but it was
too late.
The little girl has turned into a monkey and never come home. The people of Roti Island believe this story.
And that is until now; people in Roti Island never hit their children or other people’s child. They are afraid the
child would turn into a monkey.

The King of mice lived inside a bayan tree forest. One day, a poor man was cutting down some trees. As he
started to cut down the bayan tree, the king of mice grew frightened “please, leave the tree standing” he
said to the woodcutter”, and I’ll give you a piece of gild every day”.
The woodcutter agreed. So, every evening the king of mice took out a piece of gold from under the roots of
the tree and gave it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter took the pieces of gold to home and showed them
to his wife.
After a few days, his wife asked him, “where does the gold come from?”
“Don’t worry about that “, he said, “just keep it”
A few days later she asked him again, but he did not tell her. “If you don’t tell me”, she said. “I’ll go and tell
the government or even the king that you are a robber”.
The woodcutter was frightened of his wife when she was angry. So she said, “Every evening the king of mice
gives me a piece of gold from under the roots of the tree”.
“Oh you are stupid!” his wife said. “You’ve been tricked by a mouse. He gives you one piece of gold every
evening but the rest of the gold is under the tree all the time!”
Why don’t you cut down the tree and take it all away?”
The woodcutter did as she was told. He cut down the tree. But when he looked under the roots, the
gold was not there. The king of mice had run away too.
That night, the king of mice crept up to the woodcutter’s house and took back all the gold. So the
woodcutter was as poor as before.

The duck’s mother ran, leading the fox away from the lake. The fox followed her. Now he wouldn’t be able
to harm her ducklings. The duck’ mother look toward her duckling and saw that they had reached the lake.
She was relieved, so she stopped and took a deep breath. The fox thought she was tired and he came closer,
but the duck mother quickly speed her wings and rose up in the air. She landed in the middle of the lake and
her ducklings swam approach her.
The fox started in disbelief at the mother duck and ducklings. He could not reach them because they were in
the middle of the lake. In this way she fooled her enemy thinking she was hurt. When the enemy followed
her, this gave her children time escape.

Once upon a time there lived a clouds family. Papa Cloud, Mama Cloud, and Children Cloud lived quietly in
the sky.
Every morning the children could go to the sky playground to play with the slide. But since there was only
one slide, they had to take turns on the slide. Lody, the youngest cloud looked impatient. He could not wait
for his turn to come. His brother Tody, didn’t like his attitude. Suddenly they were quarrelling. Their white

A long time ago, several children were playing at a seaside when they found a turtle. They began to
abuse the turtle. After a while, a young man came and said to them, “Stop it!” The children went away.
“I really appreciate your kindness. Really would like to invite you to a wonderful place now”, the
turtle said. As soon as the young man got on the back of the turtle, he was taken a secret palace under the
sea. When he arrived, he was very surprised and said, “What a nice place!”
The palace was very beautiful and the king of the turtles hosted a feast for him. He had never
experienced such a grand feast. He received a warm welcome and he was satisfied with everything. He
thought there was no other place nicer. He said to the turtle, “thank you I am glad to have meet you.”
When he left, the turtle said, “I am going to give you two boxes, but you can only open one of the
boxes. You must not open both. Don’t forget!”
“All right. I will open only one,” he promised. After saying good bye, he returned to land. On arrival
home, he opened the bigger box. To his amazement, there was a great deal of gold of it.
“Heavens!” he said loudly. He was rich now. He thought, “The other one must also be full of
money.” He could not refrain from opening the other box, so he opened it.
As soon as opened the box, he become an old man. His hair turned white and his face was
wrinkled, like an old man of over eighty years of age. It all happened in instant. After that he regretted what
he did. “Just because I broke my promise,” he said. But it was too late.
