Once upon a time, a grandmother and her granddaughter lived in Roti Island, Nusa Tenggara Timur. They had
a field and grew some vegetables. The grandmother sold them at the market.
In the morning, the granddaughter would go to the market. Before she left, she asked her granddaughter to
cook.
“Please cook some rice for lunch. But just cook one gain of rice. It’s enough for both of us”
“Why grandma?” asked the girl.
“Just do what I said.”
The grandmother then left for the market. Later, the girl started to cook. However, she felt a grain of rice
would not enough for them.
“I think it’s not enough for me and my grandmother”. Then she cooked two handfuls of rice. Suddenly,
something bad happened to the rice pot. “OH, no! The rice flowed out and flowed until it covered the kitchen.
Suddenly, the grandmother came home. The girl explained what happened.
“You are naughty girl! Why didn’t you listen to me? The grandmother was so angry. She hit the girl with
wooden stick.
“Please forgive me, Grandma! The little girl cried and cried. But the grandmother kept hitting her.
Then an incredible thing happened! The girl turned into a monkey. The monkey then ran away and climbed
a tree. The grandmother chased it. From the tree, the monkey said. “Grandmother, I’m a monkey now. I
cannot live with you anymore. You are alone”.
The monkey climbed up and disappeared. The grandmother was very sad. She regretted what she had done
to her beloved granddaughter.” Please come back to me. Please forgive me, my granddaughter!”, but it was
too late.
The little girl has turned into a monkey and never come home. The people of Roti Island believe this story.
And that is until now; people in Roti Island never hit their children or other people’s child. They are afraid the
child would turn into a monkey.

The duckling hurried toward the lake. The mother duck wondered what to do. She began to walk back and
forth dragging one wing on the ground. When the fox saw her, he became happy. He said to himself. “It
seems that she’s hurt and can’t fly! I can easily catch and eat her!” Then he ran towards her.
The duck’s mother ran, leading the fox away from the lake. The fox followed her. Now he wouldn’t be able
to harm her ducklings. The duck’ mother look toward her duckling and saw that they had reached the lake.
She was relieved, so she stopped and took a deep breath. The fox thought she was tired and he came closer,
but the duck mother quickly speed her wings and rose up in the air. She landed in the middle of the lake and
her ducklings swam approach her.
The fox started in disbelief at the mother duck and ducklings. He could not reach them because they were in
the middle of the lake. In this way she fooled her enemy thinking she was hurt. When the enemy followed
her, this gave her children time escape.

Once upon a time there lived a clouds family. Papa Cloud, Mama Cloud, and Children Cloud lived quietly in
the sky.
Every morning the children could go to the sky playground to play with the slide. But since there was only
one slide, they had to take turns on the slide. Lody, the youngest cloud looked impatient. He could not wait
for his turn to come. His brother Tody, didn’t like his attitude. Suddenly they were quarrelling. Their white
bodies become grey. It meant they were very angry. When the cloud were angry, water usually come out
their bodies. It meant rain for the people on the earth.
“Stop it, children! Stop fighting!” Papa cloud said.
“You can play with the slide turns. Now, shake hands. Both of you!” order Papa cloud.
Lody and Tody shake hands and slowly their colors changed. Their bodies became fair white again. The rain
stopped and people on earth cloud go on their activities again.

Sesungguhnya pada kisah-kisah mereka itu terdapat pengajaran bagi orang-orang yang mempunyai
akal. Al Quran itu bukanlah cerita yang dibuat-buat, akan tetapi membenarkan (kitab-kitab) yang
sebelumnya dan menjelaskan segala sesuatu,
dan sebagai petunjuk dan rahmat bagi kaum yang beriman.
