Photography Gear & Tips Guide

This document discusses photographer Julia Kuzmenko McKim's process for creating a colorful beauty image using Profoto lights and a smoke machine. She began by setting up four Profoto D1 Air monolights with color gels behind the model for rim lighting. She also used a 20.5-inch beauty dish with a grid as her main light. Once makeup and hair were complete, she turned on the smoke machine and lit it in portions to photograph the model amid the smoke. Her goal was to achieve highlights and separation between midtones on the model's skin to depict it as dewy and fresh.

EDITOR ’S PICK

Full of Zest
By Jacqueline Tobin

“I shot this image at a dance rehearsal

with choreographer Gentry George,”
explains photographer Felix Kunze.
“George runs the ZEST Collective, a
NYC dance company that’s exploring
new forms of expression in dance.
His work is unlike anything I’ve seen
before. Our long-term collaboration
means the dancers and I know
each other well, and they were very
comfortable to have a backdrop and
lighting in the rehearsal space.”
Kunze asked each dancer to run
through a routine they had been
working on, or to interpret a song
playing at the moment, or to simply
rehearse in front of the backdrop. “Each
exploded with energy, emotion and
strength and the resulting image, a
composite, is powerful and the closest
thing to the feeling of being in a boiling
hot room, music blaring and dancers
taking your breath away,” Kunze says.
The composite itself took quite
some time. He says it was done in the
format of 1:2 so that it would work
perfectly on Instagram, spread out as
two images.
This was lit with two Elinchrom ELB
400s with action heads and a Rotalux
Deep OctaBox on Kunze’s Nikon
D810 with a 50mm f/1.4 prime lens.
The entire shoot took about one hour
and includes individual portraits of
each dancer.

Ever been to the heart of the Flatiron District in New York City, also known as the “Photo District”? Well, here’s one
more reason to visit if you haven’t already: Fujifilm’s brand new Wonder Photo Shop, an immersive photo and brand

photography to all aspects of people’s lives, the store helps visitors discover how they can bring their favorite images
from smartphones and social media to life, through prints, personalized photo products, wall decorations and unique
DIY photo creations. On display are a full range of Fujifilm’s Instax instant print cameras, the Share Smartphone Printer

Somewhere right now, criss-crossing the U.S., are Brazil-based wedding photographers
Dani and Grasi and their son, Otto, for a months-long adventure called the Wedding Tour
Project. The 9-year-old isn’t just tagging along for kicks—he, too, is towing his own gear bag
for the family’s business, Rocker in Love.
“Otto grew up between tripods, flashes, albums and backdrops,” Grasi says, and
he’s been playing with toy cameras for years. But having their son shoot weddings with
them began somewhat by accident. In an attempt to photograph at least one wedding
in each state wuth this year’s project, the parents expected a photo assistant to join
them to, among other things, keep an eye on Otto while they worked, but last-minute
circumstances landed them without extra help.
“We talked to Otto, dressed him nicely with a bow tie and took him to his first wedding,”
Grasi explains, “but in the middle of the wedding, he went to the back of the church with
this little film camera and started to take photos hidden! While Dani was working normally,
I went to the back of the church and gave him directions of where to be, and he did it all
perfectly as a pro, with a big smile. The bride and groom loved him!”
Otto joined the Rocker in Love team, with his own gear bag and red shoes, just like his
parents, and he’s been a big draw for couples. Their clients get files from all three family
members, who all have photos in the couples’ albums, too. “Of course, he is free to shoot
or play with the other kids, but he is always with his little camera,” says Grasi, who calls
her son’s style “quietly journalistic.” Opening his memory cards is always a treat. “People
look different on his photos,” she says with amazement. “They have bigger smiles and
sometimes they do funny faces!”
For his part, Otto loves “photographing details like the bride with her makeup, the
decoration,” he says, “and I love being in this moment when people are so happy, even
when they are crying.”
Already, clients are moved by the 9-year-old’s professionalism and maturity. One day,
Grasi remembers, when the Rocker in Love team was saying goodbye at the end of an
Illinois wedding, the father of the bride knelt down and thanked him for his work. “He saw
Otto keeping every detail of that day in his small camera,” Grasi says. “Otto smiled and
hugged the bride’s father and said, ‘You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy my work so you’ll
be happy when you see the pictures and remember this day.’ ” —Libby Peterson

LIGHT READING

Up Close and Personal

BY J I M CO R N F I E L D

Light and Shadow

by tony corbell | amherst media | 128 pp.
The subtitle to Tony Corbell’s Light and Shadow reads Dynamic Lighting
Design for Location Portrait Photography, and there’s plenty of excellent
nuts and bolts information on that specialty. As an unannounced bonus,
workshop maven Corbell, touted in the book’s promos as a “lighting
guru,” reaches behind his portraiture theme to reprise nearly all the
lighting fundamentals he’s been teaching for 30-plus years, including
chestnuts like the H&D Curve, the “Sunny 16 Rule” and the Inverse Square
Law. Altogether, it makes for an excellent little refresher course, and, by
extension, a useful reference source for every photographer.
Of course, the tacit promise of any book with a grand, all-inclusive title
like Light and Shadow is that here, between these covers, readers will find the last word in lighting
tutorials. It’s not the last word, and the ever-busy editors at Amherst Media will no doubt prove
that. Just give them a month.

Absence of Being
by susan burnstine | text by del zogg, chantel paul and susan burnstine
damiani | 112 pp.
Absence of Being is a fine-art photography collection that flies in the
face of buying anything at all—especially cameras. The eloquent neo-
pictorialist images of Susan Burnstine were created with her signature
home-built cameras—rough-hewn bodies and optics she crafts herself.
The history of this approach, and the psychological journey that
sparked it, are central to Burnstine’s text. The dreamy introspection that
characterizes these amazing photographs is a powerful argument for a
unique and daring creative strategy. Whether or not Burstine inspires you
to cobble together your own camera, Absence of Being is a must.

Personal Vision
by adger cowans | preface by gordon parks
glitterati incorporated | 256 pp.
With race in this country a hot topic during our political season, this new title
is especially relevant. Adger Cowans is an uncelebrated artist overdue for
recognition who concentrates his photography on monochrome images
of, primarily, black Americans—residents of the inner city, farm laborers,
and Broadway and motion-picture stars. There are mainstream journalism
and film studio production stills in his portfolio, but his work for the last 40
years has been his powerful studies of the black experience in our society.
They’re pure inspiration to anyone who aspires to raise the intensity level
in portraiture. Heed the iconic Gordon Parks, for whom Cowans worked as
an assistant, and who called him “one of America’s finest photographers.”

LENSES: 35mm f/1.4 and 58mm f/1.4 EXTRAS: iPhone COMMENTS: “The couple, who eloped, wanted totally different
sessions,” Panciatici explains, “one with the traditional Kimono dresses and one with more westernized fashion
looks. The first one was calm and very slow (a real kimono is about 7 kilos in weight), and the second shoot was
faster, contemporary and creative. The mix is very representative of the Japanese culture: a very cool mix of
traditions with contemporary, modern elements.”

A recent elopement in Kyoto, Japan,
allowed Panciatici to nicely contrast
the old with the new.

When it comes to shooting elopements, most

wedding photographers will agree that while it allows
you all the time to shoot what you want without
pressure, you also have to focus harder on the story
you want to tell. It’s not always easy to build a good
narrative with just two characters, but Panciatici says
that in this case, it was no problem.

through the filter of that why and see how it stands up.
• Remember that the gift doesn’t have to be expensive. A gift with heart and reason behind it will

• Give them something that will remind them of you and will go with them through their marriage.

It Makes All the Difference When You...

• Arrive early and act the part. Be overly confident. Show them that they’ve hired a true professional.
• Memorize the names of the VIPs. The respect you gain will serve dividends throughout the entire day.
• Shoot through moments and take thousands of photos. Even if it feels like you covered everything, keep shooting. It gets
the clients more accustomed to your presence and the sound of shutter clicks. They’ll begin to ignore the camera
within minutes. This will set you up for the rest of the day.
• Smile, smile, smile! The positivity is contagious.
• Take time to dance your butts off with the clients and their guests at the end of the day. Guests are happily shocked when
the photographers are cool enough to dance. It shows that you love what you do and you love their wedding day.
• End the night with hugs and enormous gratitude to build on the new relationships you have made.

GUIDE
IT’S OCTOBER! And with the changing leaves and cooler weather comes lots of energy and
excitement for PDN’s PhotoPlus Expo in NYC, where aisles upon aisles of products, gadgets and
gear are displayed. And with this being a Photokina year (that mammoth show took place in
Cologne, Germany, last month), there’s been even more product buzz lately. So what’s hot? Drones
continue to make a big splash now that the FAA has cleared the regulatory air for their commercial
use. Photo booths (like the fun, quirky one on our cover) are getting more inventive and socially
connected, helping wedding photographers capture extra revenue in the process. Virtual reality and
360-degree cameras are also coming of age, allowing photographers and filmmakers to capture a
scene like never before. Strap on your goggles and prepare to be wowed!

Bridal Blur
By Carrie Schwab, General Manager and Editor-in-Chief, Junebug Weddings

I love how a lack of focus can create such a transient, yet wild sense of movement. There is an element of intrigue that
exists in not being able to see the subject clearly, and I have learned to embrace that feeling of momentum rather than
attempt to pin it down. In Tomasz Wagner’s out-of-focus bridal portrait, we are immediately thrown into the motion of the
photo. The bride is walking swiftly down a sidewalk, gathering her dress and looking determined as she moves forward.
As the viewer, you feel an enormous sense of hurriedness, a feeling you wouldn’t be able to gather from a still portrait.
While focus gives you beautiful detail and clarity, stepping outside of focus, or even neglecting it altogether,
can connect the viewer and subject in new and exciting ways.
For a Q&A with Tomasz Wagner on the story and technique behind this shot,
