~ contact _cldsure between the two external run terminals also located on the rear panel

The "Music" Player on the left can be set to play tracks in their recorded sequence or in a pseudo random
sequence set by DIP Switches on the rear panel

The "Spot" Player on the right will always play recorded tracks in their recorded sequence

The ratio of "Music" to "Spot" tracks can be set for a ratio of anywhere between 1:1 to 15:1 by DIP switch
settings on the rear panel

CF cards can be removed and changed while the RAD-01 is delivering Audio, changing the "Idle" Card "On The
Run" can be done without the playback stopping

Security

I The RAO-01 is provided with two security features to hinder removal, copying or playing of recorded material on
• the Compact Flash Cards

The first feature is a security shield or plate fixed by two screws in front of each CF Player to prevent removal or
theft of the cards without actually using tools

The second security feature is the use of special file extension names for the MP3 tracks which can be invoked
by the owner of the RAO-01 in case of Copyright Issues

The special file extension names will prevent the tracks on the CF card being played on a PC or MP3 Player,
and ordinary MP3 tracks will not play on the RAO-01 when set to require the special file extension names

Each player can be set to use one of 4 preset file extension names determined by setting internal jumpers

The actual extension names are programmed into the RAO-01 via the RS-232 Port on the rear panel using a
Null Modem Serial Cable, a PC and Windows Hyper-terminal menu

This menu allows a total lockout of the file extension name .MP3 from being active regardless of the internal
jumper settings making it impossible to play MP3 audio files with the conventional .MP3 extension

As supplied standard from the factory, both CF Players are set to play ordinary MP3 Audio Files

The serial port also reports the playback status of the RAO-01 including the file name of the track being played,
total track play duration and additional diagnostic information

Serial Port Details

OB-9 Male, 19200 baud, no parity, 8 data and 1 stop bit with Hyperterminal to be set-up as to emulate a TTY
terminal

Programming or loading CF Cards

The RAO-01 is inherently highly reliable, being completely Solid State, and using removable Compact Flash
Media Cards, using MP3 Compression

Compact Flash Media Cards are easily programmed or loaded with MP3 Audio Files from a PC using Adobe
Audition, formerly Cool Edit Pro or other common Audio Editing Software such as Audacity, downloadable free
from Internet, an MP3 Encoder such as the Alto MP3 Maker and a USB Memory Card Reader

Before loading MP3 Audio Files to the CF Cards, we recommend these be treated by a Normalizing Process to
produce Constant Volume or Constant Loudness

Our recommended Normalizing Program is MP3 GAIN , downloadable free from Internet

MP3 Gain operates by analyzing each audio file for Loudness and Clipping, then determines the necessary Gain
Changes, reports these and makes its recommended Gain Changes on command during a second pass

Our experience with other Normalizing Programs, some of which determine gain changes by checking Peak
Levels has been that they do more harm than good, MP3 Gain is the one to use

Compact Flash Cards

Compact Flash Media Cards are readily available in 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB readily
available 2 GB and 4 GB available from some suppliers, and 8 GB ones just been announced (July 2005)

The RAD-01 Firmware supports the standard FAT 16 and FAT 32 File Systems tested with 4 GB Compact Flash
Cards, not tested, but can in theory operate with 8 GB or larger CF Cards

Program Storage Capacity depends on capacity of the Compact Flash Card used, and the degree of MP3
Compression applied

For Emergency Program use for Broadcast, we recommend the use of a 128 MB Compact Flash Card loaded
with MP3 Audio Files at 44.1 KHz Sampling Rate, Stereo at 160 KbiUSec giving nearly 2 Hours of Audio in Near
CD Quality

For Background Music or similar Applications, a larger CF Card is recommended for the "Music" player, a
smaller CF Card, possibly as small as 64 MB will probably suffice for the "Spot" Player

A 4 GB Compact Flash Media Card will give a staggering 50 Hours at the above mentioned standard
I
Operation of the RAD-01 as an Emergency Program Source, is extremely simple with AU9io delivery starting on
a maintained contact closure between the two control terminals located on the rear of the urit

User Setup

The RAD-01 player operation can be configured on the rear accessible DIP Switches as follows;

Switch 1 to 4, Select Music to Spot Ratio, 1:1 5:1, Binary Switch Coding

Sw!tch 5, Start on Next Tra ~k after stoppe.d (OFF Start from Track 1 (ON) (Sequence play only)

SWitch 6, Select, Random OFF Sequentlal16·

Switch 7, Run on External Con act Closure (OFF Run on power- ~~ ~N)

Switch 8, Select Output Mode, Stereo Out F) Mono outPut ~

Applications
The RAD-01 is factory aligned to provide + 4 dBu Balanced Line Level Stereo Outputs on XLR Type Male
Connectors, 300mV Unbalanced Hi-Fi Level Stereo Outputs on RCA connectors and Unbalanced, Pre
Emphasized Mono, 3.5 V PP Mono Output on a BNC Connector

This makes the RAD-01 suitable for installation on practically any Transmitter Site, whether as an Emergency
Player, or as a Audio Delivery System at Unattended Transmitter Sites such as Tourist Radio etc and also the

9

ideal Audio Delivery System for PA Background Music with periodic Announcements

Various Features
The RAD-01 will de ive Balanced Mono on both Left and Right XLR and RCA Outputs by setting DIP switch 8
on the rear panel to "On"

The BNC Unbalanced Output is internally selectable to provide 50 or 75 u/Sec Pre-Emphasis ready to be fed to
the Composite Input of an STL or normal FM Broadcast Exciter or Transmitter

All Outputs levels are adjustable from Factory Default Settings on internal Trim pots to suit different requirements

Front Panel Facilities

A Step Switch is provided on the front panel allowing the user to step through all recorded tracks in sequence for
verification of correct media and correct operation

A 6.35mm Headphone Monitor Jack and four status LED Indicators are also provided on the front panel

Playback Capabilities

All common MP3 Sampling Rates including 16 KHz, 22.05 KHz, 32 KHz, 44.1 KHz, 48 KHz and Variable Bit
Rates are supported with all common MP3 data rates up to 256 KbiUSec handled by the decoders in the RAD-01

Potential Audio Storage Capacity depending on the MP3 format used is roughly as follows

Audio Capacity, MP3 Compression, Stereo, Sampling Frequency 44.1 KHz, Data Rate160 KbiUSec, using a 128
MB Compact Flash Card, about 1.7 Hours

MP3, 44.1 KHz, 160 KbiUSec, 256 MB, about 3.4 Hours, 512 MB, about 6.8 Hours, and 1 GB, about 13.6 Hours

Greater storage capacity is potentially available at the expense of Audio Quality by changing to Mono, reducing
the Sampling Rate and increasing the Compression Ratio where as an example, a 1 GB Compact Flash Media
Card will give approximately 64 Hours of Audio Storage in Mono at 24 KHz Sampling Rate using 12:1
Compression which although not being a quality level acceptable for Broadcast, will make the RAD-01 a
practical Background Music Delivery System for use for Stores and Hotels and many other similar applications

Q. Exit setup.

Any selection except for "Q" requires the password to continue.

The factory default password is "elan"

Once the password is correctly entered, you will then be prompted by the menu for the next step

When entering file extensions, all characters and symbols are acceptable including spaces except for decimal

points. You do not need to enter the decimal point (.) file name delimiter

The player options are selected by fitting an internal jumper within the RAD-01. Each player can be set to have 1
of 4 different file extensions as depicted. Only one file extension per player can be selected

The state of the current internal links is shown toward the bottom of the menu and are only shown if they are
fitted

The "mp3 n file extension is not case sensitive, but any other extension names set are

If no links are fitted (factory default ), the file extension "mp3" is used

This feature can be locked out by the menu choice "An to prevent files with the mp3 extension to played if the
links are removed in the field, assuming different file extension names have been set through the menu

The factory default file extension for the each of the link settings is "mp3" as depicted in the example

File extensions longer than 3 characters can be used, however the player will only use the first three characters
to validate the files

The CF card can contain files with different file extensions, but the player will only "see" the files with the current
file extension selected. Changing the file extension setting or the link setting requires a restart of the players to
implement the changes, either through the menu by selecting "R" or cycling the power off and on

The custom file extensions are saved in the internal EEPROM of the processor.
Press <ESC> to refresh the current status of the unit

The menu system if started will time out and exit after 2 minutes if left open

When the menu system is in-active, the RAO-01 will then output track and diagnostic information

The menu can be re-started anytime by pressing the <ESC> key

Internal jumpers OPTION 1 to OPTION 8 select the preset file extensions as discussed

Jumpers OPTION 9 to OPTION 13 are not implemented in this version of firmware

Jumper OPTION 14 if set will add a delay of 350mS when swapping between players

This may be useful when using very low sample rate files to reduce any mixing of audio due to the other player
starting before the current one has finished playing completely

Suggested Technique for Creating Compact Flash Memory

Audio Files for Playback on RAO-01

The Technique Suggested here assume you have a USB Compact Flash Memory Card Reader installed on your
Windows Computer

1. Prepare all the audio tracks you want to use on your PC, taking good care to normalize Audio Levels, maybe
by using the Compressor/Limiter Function in your editor, particularly important if the RAO-01 is to be used to
feed direct to the Transmitter

2. Using a suitable MP3 encoder, convert all prepared files to MP3. For Emergency Program Mode, we
recommend Stereo, 44.1 KHz Sampling, 160 Kb/Sec rate. For less demanding applications, Mono, and a
Lower Sampling Frequency and Bit Rate may be satisfactory, Refer to the appendix for recommended
encoders

ELItN AUDIO
2 Steel Court South Guildford WA
Phone: 0892773500 Fax: 08 9478 2266

sales@elan.com.au www.elan.com.au

3. Open Windows Explorer and click on the drive that represents the Compact Flash Card Reader, and insert
Compact Flash Card

4. For the RAD-01 to function correctly, the Compact Flash Memory Cards MUST be Formatted to FAT 16 for
cards up to 512 MB or FAT 32 for cards larger than 512 MB before data is recorded on it

5. PLEASE NOTE: this is necessary with a new card or a card previously used for other applications

6. It is not strictly necessary to Re-Format a card If there are files on it that you want to keep as the RAD-01
reads fragmented files making Re-Formatting unnecessary. You may Add, Delete, Copy and Rename files
on the card as you see fit as this will not impede the performance of the unit

7. It is recommended you Re-Format a card where files have become excessively fragmented due to repeated
editing

For a New Card, or Card previously used for other applications

1. To format, Right Mouse click on the drive that represents the Compact Flash Card Reader and select
"FORMAT"

2. Click on the Format Type Choice "Full".

3. In Windows XP, you can choose between FAT 16 or FAT 32

4. Click on the "Start" button. The Compact Flash Memory Card to be formatted. Click "OK" if Windows
warns you that all files will be deleted. Never do this on your C: drivel!!

5. It is possible your anti-virus program may warn you of "virus like activity", Ignore and select "continue" if
this happens

6. When formatting is complete, click on "close" in the format report dialog box

7. Windows will report that it has formatted a disk, click "OK"

8. If Windows reports that you should run "Scandisk", cancel this by clicking on the "x" on the top right
corner of the dialog box that has just popped up

9. To finish the format process, click on "Close"

1O. Note that the first file copied to the card has been referred to as "Track1" in this text

11. All other prepared Audio Files can now be copied to the card

12. If you run out of space on the card when copying an excessive amount of files, no problem, just click
"Cancel". The card is now ready for use in the REP-01

13. Insert the card into the RAD-01 and after a few seconds the RDY indicator should become steady

14. Pressing the "STEP" switch will allow you step through and verify that all tracks copied are present and
correct. Use Headphones if you have no other way of monitoring the output of the RAD-01

15. Once you are satisfied that all tracks are present and correct, the RAD-01 is ready for use

CD to MP3 Encoders

There are many Internet downloadable CD to MP3 Encoders or "Rippers", some are free, others available at a
nominal charge

We have tried a few of these

Some appear to be very good and "Operator Friendly" while others are decidedly "Hostile"

One we have tried with good results is the ALTO MP3 MAKER, available by Internet Download for only $ 19.95c
US, web address www.yuansoft.com

The ALTO MP3 MAKER is versatile, efficient, and easy to use, and is highly recommended by Elan Audio

It is based on the LAME Encode Engine for the MP3 Encoding Process

For Normalizing, a process where Audio Levels are optimized in an operation similar to the action of a
Compressor/Limiter, we highly recommend a simple program MP3 GAIN available free from the Internet

Normalizing, or reducing the Dynamic Range, and Limiting Peaks occurring on Audio Material intended to be fed
directly into a Transmitter is very important, and handled particularly well by the MP3 GAIN Program
