MERGAL® K10N
Industrial Preservative for Aqueous Systems
Description
Mergal® K10N is a non-skin sensitizing BIT (Benzisothiazolinone) formulation. The product is an industrial preservative used to prevent
deterioration and degradation caused by bacteria and fungi in aqueous systems.
Application & Use
Mergal K10N is useful in systems such as polymer emulsions, paints, coatings, caulks, sealants, adhesives, thickeners, joint cements,
pigment and mineral slurries, metalworking fluids, oil-water emulsions, textile coatings, and inks. Mergal K10N is suitable for a wide range
of conditions and can be used at pH 3-13. Since Mergal K10N contains no organic solvents, it is especially suited for applications in which
VOC is a concern.

Product Highlights
• VOC and formaldehyde free
• Solvent and surfactant free
• Easy to incorporate
• Broad pH and thermal stability

Mergal® K10N is a preservative used to prevent microbial deterioration and degradation due to bacteria and fungi. Minimum inhibitory
concentration (MIC) is an indication of which microorganisms can be controlled by a preservative and the concentration at which growth of
the test organism is inhibited under laboratory conditions. The lower the MIC value, the greater the product’s effectiveness. MIC values
should only be used for relative comparisons. Practical use concentrations are generally much higher and should be established through
field tests and actual use.

Function/Activity
The improved advanced BIT technology in Mergal K10N is VOC-free, provides convenience and contributes environmental and economic
benefits to many applications. With its improved water solubility, Mergal K10N can outperform Sodium BIT products by placing more BIT in
the aqueous phase where it is needed most. The product does not require pre-dilution before use and does not cause seeding or shock
latex systems.

Mergal K10N is typically used at a level of 0.05 - 0.5% by weight. The level required to protect any particular system depends on a variety
of factors, including: initial level of microbiological contamination, the components of the system, the likelihood of exposure to repeat
microbiological intrusions, residual reducing and oxidizing agents, and the temperature and the pH of the system.

Formulation Considerations
Mergal K10N is a liquid product easily incorporated into waterborne systems. The product remains convenient to handle year round and
can be easily pumped from drums or bulk storage. For best results, Mergal K10N should be added as early in the production process as
possible.

Keep container closed. Store in a dry place. Do not store at elevated temperatures. Keep from freezing. Do not reuse empty drum.
