FASHION

Part 1

1. Do you enjoy buying clothes?

Yes, like most people, I’m a slave to fashion. Sometimes, I spend extravagantly on luxurious

brands as a way to reward myself for my considerable effort.

 a slave to fashion /sleɪv/ (noun phr.): nô lệ của thời trang

 extravagantly /ɪkˈstræv.ə.ɡənt.li/ (adv): một cách phung phí
 luxurious brand /lʌɡˈʒʊə.ri.əs/ (noun phr.): thương hiệu xa xỉ
 reward myself for something /rɪˈwɔːd/ (verb): tự thưởng cho bản thân cái gì

2. What type of clothes do you like to wear?

Well, I prefer casuals because I feel comfy and flexible. I also wear a pair of jeans on a regular
basis as I can easily mix and match them with a T-shirt and sneakers.

 casuals /ˈkæʒ.ju.əl/ (noun): quần áo thường ngày

 mix and match (idiom): phối đồ

3. Why do you think jeans are popular?

I think firstly because it is always in vogue. Youngsters are really into ripped jeans. Secondly
maybe because of its price. You know, pairs of jeans are quite affordable for people from
all walks of life.

 in vogue /vəʊɡ/ (phrase): thịnh hành

 affordable /əˈfɔː.də.bəl/ (adj): có thể chi trả được, (giá cả) phải chăng
 walks of life /wɔːk/ (idiom): tầng lớp trong xã hội

4. Do you wear different styles of clothes now compared to 10 years ago?

5. Are you willing to wear a uniform at work?

Part 2

Describe a piece of clothing you enjoy wearing

You should say:

 where you bought it
 how often you wear it
 what it is like
 And explain why you enjoy wearing it

Part 3

1. Do you think it is good for people to buy expensive clothes? Why?

Though each person has their own preference when it comes to fashion, which satisfies both
their taste and affordability. I believe it’s more economically wise not to spend extravagantlyon
clothing because of several reasons. Firstly, since such an excessive amount can be invested in
more practical needs like experiences or knowledge. I mean, rather than splurging on
these designer clothes,  people should buy books or traverse different places so as to
broaden their horizons. Secondly, fashion is mainly short-lived. Once a specific type of clothing
goes out of fashion, it is likely to be left untouched for eternity despite being worn a few times.

2. Why do some women buy cheaper clothes and expensive ones at the same time?

I think mainly because each type of clothes serves a specific purpose. Since high-
priced clothes are usually more exquisite, women will spend an excessive amount of money
on luxurious brands so that they can look more fashionable. However, on normal days, it’s more
suitable for them to dress in low-cost casualswhich give them a sense of comfort and flexibility.

 high-priced (adj): đắt đỏ
 exquisite /ɪkˈskwɪz.ɪt/ (adj): đẹp
 flexibility /ˌflek.səˈbɪl.ə.ti/ (noun): sự linh hoạt

3. What’s the difference between the dressing style of young people and that of old

people?

4. Do you think students like to wear uniforms?

5. When do people wear formal clothes?

1. Can we learn about someone’s personality based on the clothes they wear?

In my opinion, I fervently believe that style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.
Therefore, the way people choose their outfits and accessories could partly tell about their
characters. If they are meticulous and decent, you may see from the way those individuals pay
attention to little details in their outfits such as wrinkles in the collar or small stains at the edge
of the shirt. In contrast, regarding those who are careless, their clothes might not be relatively
decent and sometimes they might not be well-groomed.

Từ vựng cần lưu ý:

 fervently: nồng nhiệt, nhiệt thành, tha thiết

Ví dụ: I fervently believe that he would love me forever.

(Dịch nghĩa: Tôi tin mãnh liệt rằng anh ấy sẽ yêu tôi mãi mãi)

 meticulous: tỉ mỉ, kỹ càng, để ý tiểu tiết

Ví dụ: She paid attention to every meticulous detail in the research.

Ví dụ: You should wear a decent outfit to the prom

2. What is the difference between clothes that young people and old people like to wear?

Cách 1:

From what I've seen, it’s safe to say that the fashion style of youngsters is in stark contrast to
that of senior people. In terms of the latter, here in Vietnam, the elderly used to experience the
war, when our country was torn apart by bombs and bullets and in dire need of support, people
literally wore anything that could keep them warm and protect them from the heat. Therefore,
the mindset of having enough clothes to wear as a privilege has been rooted in older people's
minds. They generally lean toward simple, plain, and not pricey clothes. Having said that, the
younger generation arguably considers clothes to be part of their identity, a way to show their
personality. They mostly are keen on trendy, fashionable clothes with fancy bells and whistles.
Từ vựng cần lưu ý:

 stark: nổi bật ra, lộ rõ hẳn ra

Ví dụ: The stark reality is that we are suffering from a huge loss.

(Dịch nghĩa: Sự thật rành rành rằng chúng ta đang chịu tổn thất lớn)

 torn apart: bị chia rẽ, chia cắt, bị xé nát

Ví dụ: Their marriage was torn apart because of the husband cheating on her

Ví dụ: Global warming will have dire consequences on polar bears.

Ví dụ: In the past, going to school was a privilege.

Ví dụ: She is interested in wearing stunning dresses with fancy bells and whistles.

3. Do you agree that expensive clothes are always better quality than cheap clothes?

In my opinion, I reckon that clothes which are relatively pricey are not necessarily superior in
quality to their cheaper counterparts. Because the market is becoming saturated with more and
more homogenous products, raising brand awareness is of the essence. Therefore, many luxury
brands have allocated a considerable percentage of their budget on promoting their products
such as commercial ads or celebrity endorsements. From that point, the price of an expensive
shirt might also include the money for other expenses, which leads to a more expensive price.

Từ vựng cần lưu ý:

 reckon: nghĩ, đoán

Ví dụ: I reckon that today it will rain all day

(Dịch nghĩa: Tôi đoán rằng hôm nay trời sẽ mưa)

 superior: cao cấp, ở vị trí cao hơn

Ví dụ: This stunning painting is clearly the work of a superior artist.

Ví dụ: The market is saturated with commercial advertisements.

Ví dụ: Homogeneous flared pants are found in many brands.

(Dịch nghĩa: Quần ống loe dáng đồng nhất được tìm thấy ở rất nhiều nhãn hàng)

4. Why do people change the style of their clothes as they grow older?

Although I cannot speak for everyone, I suppose that as we gradually become adults, we
must look the part in the workplace, wearing casual clothes at business meetings or formal
workplace would be forbidden and inappropriate. In addition, clothes are
of paramount importance in adult life, because the outfits you choose are heavily associated
with your personality, which is proven to be a way of judging people. Therefore, those are the
reasons why adults change their fashion style as they grow up.

Từ vựng cần lưu ý:

 Look the part: Ăn mặc/hành xử phù hợp và gây ấn tượng đúng với một vị trí hoặc vai trò
cụ thể nào đó

Ví dụ: If you're going to work in a professional company, you've got to look the part.

Ví dụ: Students arriving late are forbidden to attend the final exams

(Dịch nghĩa: Học sinh đến muộn bị cấm tham gia bài thi cuối kỳ)

 paramount: có tầm quan trọng, ý nghĩa lớn

Ví dụ: Punctuality is of paramount importance

 be associated with: được gắn liền với

Ví dụ: Nowadays, wearing luxury clothes is associated with being rich

(Dịch nghĩa: Ngày nay, mặc quần áo đắt tiền được gắn liền với việc giàu)

5. Are there any traditional clothes that people wear in your country?

I believe that most countries and cultures have their own traditional garments that people still
wear on special occasions. And my country is no exception, with “Ao dai" being our national
dress. It is considered one of our country’s most striking symbols of beauty. Over hundreds of
years, the Ao dai has evolved alongside Vietnam, going from regal to practical, humble to high
fashion, and back again. The Vietnamese Ao dai is appreciated by the young and old alike, and
its elegant lines flatter both men and women.

Từ vựng cần lưu ý

 garments: trang phục

Ví dụ: You should wear a decent garment to the business meeting.

(Dịch nghĩa: Bạn nên mặc một bộ trang phục chỉnh chu ở cuộc họp)

 regal: vương giả, xứng với vua chúa

Ví dụ: Such propaganda had a significant impact at the time, which might damage regal
imagery.

(Dịch nghĩa: Việc tuyên truyền ở thời điểm hiện tại có sức ảnh hưởng rất lớn, nó có thể huỷ hoại
hình ảnh hoàng gia)

 humble: khiêm tốn, bình thường

Ví dụ: He is very humble despite being a billionaire

(Dịch nghĩa: Anh ấy rất khiêm tốn mặc dù anh ấy là một tỷ phú)

 appreciate: trân trọng

Ví dụ: I really appreciate all the critics from my teachers.

Ví dụ: I knew he was only flattering me because he wanted to take advantage of me.

(Dịch nghĩa: Tôi biết anh ấy chỉ tung hô tôi bởi vì anh muốn lợi dụng tôi)

6. When do people in your country wear traditional clothes?

Although I can't speak for everyone, from what I have seen, it's safe to say that Vietnamese
women love wearing áo dài for photoshoots in beautiful settings. Golden Autumn days in Hanoi
call for photo sessions around Hoàn Kiếm Lake. During Tết (Lunar New Year) you’ll see the dress
in all its glory as women wear it to visit friends and family, and pay tribute at temples and
shrines. Additionally, a wedding and  engagement ceremony are the perfect time to dress in the
national costume. In Vietnam, the bride and groom and the wedding entourage will
wear elaborate áo dài at the traditional ceremony, then guests will show up for the reception in
simpler but equally colorful designs.

Từ vựng cần lưu ý

 pay tribute: đi cúng viếng hoặc ca ngợi

Ví dụ: People go to temples to pay tribute to all the soldiers who had sacrificed during the war.

tranh)

 glory: danh tiếng, thanh danh, sự vinh quang

Ví dụ: The museum in all its glory is now open to the public

Ví dụ: They have prepared the most elaborate wedding that I have ever seen.

Ví dụ: In Vietnam, the engagement ceremony is held before the official wedding.

No, I don’t buy clothes very often. I buy only when I don’t have anything new to wear or when it
is a special occasion.

2Are clothes important to you?

Yes, they are very important as they protect us from cold, dry and hot weather. It protects our
body from germs that are present in the atmosphere and also helps to maintain proper hygiene.
It also helps to protect our body from ultraviolet radiations which may cause skin problems.

3What kind of clothes do you prefer to wear?

I prefer loose and baggy clothes which maintain my comfort level and also make me look
presentable even when I’m at home.

Speaking Part 2
Here is an audio recording of the sample answers for Speaking Part 2. As you listen to it, you
can refer to the transcriptions below for more clarity on the Speaking Test. By focusing on
clearly enunciating and pronouncing, you can ace the Speaking Test.

Describe an item of clothing that you recently bought.

You should say:

 what it is
 when and where you bought it
 what it looks like and
 explain why you bought it.

Sample Answer
The last item of clothing that I bought was a pair of boots. I bought them when I went to the
Silk Market on my day off. They are black, tall, and soft. They also look very smart. This pair
caught my eye because they were simple and matched my clothes and accessories. I chose
them because boots can be worn on many different occasions and still be appropriate. Also in
the  winter it’s very cold here in Beijing and it’s good to have some warm shoes to wear when
you go out. It is popular to wear shoes that have pointy or tight toes, but to me this style looks
silly and is very uncomfortable. My boots give my feet plenty of room to be comfortable without
looking clumsy and bulky. I’m a little bit short, so I like these boots because they have a high
enough heel to make me look average without being awkward or difficult to walk in. Now of
course, one of the most important things far me besides the style is the price and that is what
attracted me to these boots. My friends all tell me that if I went to Europe or America, my boots
would have cost me an arm and a leg. No pun intended. Here in China my boots are very
reasonably priced.
I guess that would be the final reason why I bought them.

Vocabulary for Cue Card

 Awkward: Causing difficulty; hard to do or deal with.

Eg: There is always an awkward silence in the temple
 Clumsy: Awkward in movement or in handling things.
Eg: She is way too clumsy than I thought
 Bulky: Large and unwieldy.
Eg: Sarah was carrying a bulky bag
 Plenty: More than enough.
Eg: There are plenty of clothes in my wardrobe already

Speaking Part 3

1 What type of clothes do you like ?

I mostly like older styles, such as those during the 60s. I also like newer style like some kinds of
punk clothes. I like skirts and dresses best. Loose types of clothing are most comfortable. I like
to have nice, neat, stylish clothing, too.

2 How do people choose what style of clothing to buy ?

Many people buy clothing because it is a new style or it’s a color that they like. Often people will
buy something because it looks like what a favorite movie star or singer wears. Other people
buy clothes that suit them, or that they will wear most often. Other people just buy clothes
because they are functional.
3 Do you think the brand of clothing is important ?
Personally I don’t really care about the brand of clothing as long as what I buy is good quality.
Famous brands are usually too expensive for me so I will rarely buy them. Often I can find
inexpensive brands that are just as good a quality and very nice. Of course here in China you
can get brand name clothes at a very cheap price.

4 Why do some people buy brand-name clothes ?

Many people buy brand name clothing because they like the style. However, some people
simply want their clothes to last a long time, so they buy a certain brand of clothing that is
known for its good quality. Other people buy brand name clothing because they feel it make
them look more stylish and hip. Some people just like to have that name on their clothing. I think
it might make them feel important.

5 Compare the materials and fashions of today’s clothing with those of the past.
In my opinion, older fashions changed more slowly and gradually from one to another. They
faded into each other. Fashions of today change drastically in a very short period of time. Often
certain clothes will only be in style for one year or so before another, very different style is in. Of
course there are more choices to choose now.

6 Do men and women have the same shopping habits when they buy clothes ?
No, they have very different shopping habits. Often men will shop less and only because they
need new clothes. They often do not buy much, and they will spend less money on what they
buy. Actually I think that they dread shopping and probably would rather go to the dentist.
Women buy clothes more often and they usually pay more for their clothing. Often they will buy
new clothes because they want to be in style. I think women also don’t mind spending money as
long as it’s their boyfriend’s or husband’s.

7 Sometimes factory workers and very often school students have to wear uniforms. What do

you think of this?

I think it helps reduce competition in the work or school area. When the workers or students
don’t feel that they have to keep up with someone else’s clothes or style, they are able to
concentrate on work or study. The bad side to it is that if the uniform is uncomfortable or does
not look very smart or stylish, it makes work or school unpleasant for some people. Also it can
make people feel that they have no individuality and they are just like everyone else.

8 How much do overseas fashion trends influence China ?

Overseas fashion treads, especially the Korean styles greatly affect the styles in China. For
young people, dressing like the young people do oversees is very important. Often a style will
come into China a bit later than it does to the rest of the western world, but when it catches on
in China, it spreads very quickly. When you travel to cities such as Shanghai or Dalian, you can
really see the influence of foreign fashion here in China.

9 Do you think it is good that people in China follow foreign fashion trends?
I think many Chinese feel better about themselves if they dress more fashionably, especially for
young people, the way they dress is like their status. The dress is very important in all levels of
society. With TV and fashion models and more money here in China ,it is a lot easier to follow
these trends.

10 Are clothes important to you?

Yes, they’re incredibly important. They make me look good, and thus feel good about myself.
Besides, in my culture, people are judged by the clothes they wear, and I would like to be
judged positively.

11 What kind of clothes do you dislike?

I don’t like anything made from polyester, or any other synthetic material. It looks cheap, isn’t
breathable, and is of course bad for the environment. Also, I am not fond of anything too
revealing, as I am a modest person by nature.

12 Can clothing tell you much about a person?

We can tell a lot about a person based on what he wears and how he wears it. For example,
when we look at a person in a well-fitted suit, we get the impression that he is successful and
has his life together. A person who usually wears a t-shirt and shorts on the other hand, signals
that he/she is laid-back and easygoing.

Vocabulary for Speaking Part 3

 Functional: Purpose, or task
Eg: Mr. Hari holds a functional role in his office
 Inexpensive: Not expensive
Eg: I know a lot of inexpensive brands in Delhi
 Faded: Gradually grow faint and disappear.
Eg: The craze of movies have gradually faded in the youth
 Revealing: Making interesting or significant information known, especially of a personal nature.
Eg: He just put aside his snuff-colored wig, revealing a scalp that was bald.

Pedro: I used to … yes … like most young people I was a bit of a slave to fashion and I’d always have to
buy that must-have shirt or pair of shoes … I’m not so bothered now though … I wouldn’t feel
comfortable wearing something old fashioned but I’m not as bothered as I used to be about what I wear

Examiner: What kind of clothes do you like to wear?

Marco: I prefer casual clothes actually … I hate getting dressed up for special occasions … personally I
think it’s possible to look good in a pair of jeans … but that’s my opinion … I don’t think my wife would
call me a fashion icon that’s for sure …

Examiner: Are there many clothes shops where you live?

Sylvia: Yes … there are lots in my town … apart from the big chain stores we’ve got a couple of really
nice shops that sell vintage clothes … old clothes but in a classic style that never really go out of
fashion … I love going there …

Part 2-style task

Describe someone you know who dresses well. You should say

 who they are

 how you know them
 what kind of clothes they wear

and say why you like the way they dress.

Tomoko:  I’d like to talk about one of my teachers … Miss Evans … she teaches us English in the school
I go to … we always look forward to seeing what she’s going to wear when our lessons start … she’s
always very well dressed and takes a lot of pride in her appearance … it’s not that she dresses in
very smart clothes … she doesn’t come to school dressed to kill or anything like that … but what she
wears really suits her … and she has a great sense of style as well … we often ask her where she gets
some of her clothes and most of the time they’re just off the peg … and she says she’s not interested
in designer labels or anything like that … she doesn’t seem too concerned about keeping up with the
latest fashion … she just wears clothes that are timeless … yes … Miss Evans is the person I think looks
great in the clothes she wears …

Part 3-style questions

Examiner: What factors do you think affect the clothes we choose to wear?

Maki: It depends … where we are or where we’re going is a big factor … if you are going out to a club or
party you’re going to dress for the occasion … and then there are those who think it’s important to look
like they’re on trend … they’ll want to wear the latest fashions … there are lots of factors really …

Examiner: What kind of things determine what is in fashion and what we should be wearing?
Martin: I suppose the big fashion houses and fashion shows must have an effect but the clothes you
see on the catwalk don’t always reflect what normal people wear … so I suppose it will be things like
what singers are wearing in videos or models are wearing in magazines … that kind of thing …

Examiner: Is it possible to look good without spending lots of money on clothes?

Corinna: I’m sure it is … yes … I suppose it’s about having an eye for what looks good … knowing
how to mix and match different items of clothing that go well together … I think you can pick up great
bargains in charity shops … sometimes for youngsters even hand-me-downs can look good …

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1 - CÂU HỎI VÀ SAMPLE ANSWERS CHỦ ĐỀ FASHION &
CLOTHES

1. What types of clothes do you like to wear?

Well, it depends. When I go to work, I always try to look sharp because I work in a formal
environment. So that often means a suit and tie. But, if I’m just hanging out with my friends or
taking a leisurely stroll, I have a particular liking for smart casual clothes, especially white shirts
and black skirts. It’s a perfect combination because it allows me to feel comfortable and classy
at the same time.
2. What kind of clothes do you never wear?

I absolutely hate athleisure clothing. They say it’s supposed to be comfortable. I really don’t
know why they say that. I get all hot and sweaty in it. I’d rather just work out in a T-shirt and
shorts.

3. What’s your favourite color for clothes?

Answer 1: I’m more into black, white, and grey simply because they’re neutral colors which
means they work well with other colors. Besides, I lack fashion sense, so wearing clothes with
neutral colors saves me from making poor choices of color matching.

Answer 2: Well, bright colors always tickle my fancy, especially baby blue and bright pink. To
be honest with you, my wardrobe is full of yellow, blue and light pink. Those colors always give
me a boost of energy and brighten my days.

4. Do you enjoy buying clothes?

Yes, like most young people, I was a slave of fashion and I’d always have to buy must-
have T-shirts or pairs of shoes which were fashionable or trendy. I’m not so bothered now
though I still want to be on trend. I wouldn’t feel comfortable when wearing something old-
fashioned but I don’t take pride in my appearance as much as I used to be.

5. Do you think the brand of clothing is important?

Personally, I don’t really care about the brand of clothing as long as what I buy has a good
quality. Famous brands coming from fashion houses are usually too expensive for me so I will
rarely buy them. Often I can find inexpensive brands with the same quality which are mostly off
the peg.

6. What kind of clothes do people in your country usually wear?

I live in a tropical area, so people in my country usually wear clothes with light fabrics. In
summer, we opt for light-colored clothes so that we can avoid the heat but in the winter, the
weather is usually freezing cold, so a thick coat, a wool scarf or a sweater become our common
choices.

7. Do your friends wear the same kinds of clothes as you?

Well, I think that wearing style reflects our personalities. For that reason, my friends and I
always wear different kinds of clothes even we get on with each other very well. Some of my
friends are fashionistas that they are the slaves of fashion and always keep up with the
latest world fashion trend. They also have a good sense of style and buy must-have
items. By contrast, I prefer classic clothes which are a little bit old fashion or simple styles
such as jeans or shirts. However, we respect others and think that we have different eyes for
fashion.

8. Do you wear different styles of clothes now compared to 10 years ago?

Well, I can say that there haven’t been many changes with the clothes I wear now with that of
about 10 years ago because I am not the person who is always on trend. I still wear regular
jeans and shirts for casual days or formal clothes for business events. But I think since the trend
has changed, it seems to affect me a little bit especially in terms of jeans. I used to wear jeans
flares but now I prefer slim-fit clothes.

9. Have you ever worn a uniform?

Yes, absolutely. Wearing uniform is kind of the norm in my country. Students are often dressed
in a plain white button-up shirt and a pair of navy slacks, and the shirt has to be tucked in. The
look is quite sedate, and I gotta say I liked it because I didn’t have to stand in front of the mirror
fussing over what to wear to school.

10. Do you think the clothes we wear say something about who we are?

Well, I believe that what we wear reflects our personalities and characteristics. If you are a
slave of fashion, you totally have tendency to buy must-have items because you want
to follow the latest fashion trend. You always get dressed up and take a pride in your
appearance when you go out. By contrast, if you prefer being simple you tend to choose casual
clothes which give you flexibility and comfort even at home or at work.

1. Favourite types of clothes/ fashion

Well, I’m a big fan of sporty outfits like oversize sweatshirts, hoodies or leggings because
they give me a great sense of comfort, but I still look fashionable. Besides, I can easily mix
and match them with a pair of sneakers.

I have a nine-to-five job in the office, so I really love classic styles. I often wear blazers and
pencil skirts or khakis, not only when I go to work but also when I hang out with my friends.
That’s why my buddies always tell me that I take much pride in my appearance.

I love smart-casual clothes like T-shirts, shirts and blazers because I do not only feel comfy
but also look elegant and professional. I always wanna appear presentable but don’t wanna
waste a lot of money buying clothes that are for only a particular occasion. So, I opt for this
style as I can wear almost anywhere and get appropriately dressed.

regular basis. Therefore, I usually go shopping for clothes on the Internet because you know, it
helps me save a great deal of time. Besides, I can avoid spending extravagantly on
unnecessary items.

Sample Answer

Let me tell you about a friend who is always well-dressed. Her name is Ayesha. We are the
same age, and she is a professor at the department at one of my country’s most prestigious
universities. Despite the fact that she is not really in the fashion sector, she dresses stylishly.
She is tall, not very slender, and extremely lovely.

She has been a long-time friend of mine since high school. I see her on regular occasions
because she also stays in my area. We spend time with friends as well, especially on
weekends.

She does not have a particular style or preference when it comes to fashion. I believe she
dresses according to the atmosphere as well as the occasion and event; I frequently see her
in light-coloured gowns with high-heeled shoes.

She has a thing for stylish accessories. Her shoes are always in sync with her outfit. I believe
she has a large wardrobe of nice clothes, shoes, and handbags because I seldom see her
wearing the same outfit twice. I have seen her in casual clothes as well, but they do not appear
to be plain or boring on her.

She can present herself nicely in any outfit, in my opinion. She appears to be at ease in
anything she wears. She maintains a neat and tidy appearance at all times. Her style appeals
to me because she does not dress in an ostentatious or offensive manner. She maintains
a professional and respectable demeanour at all times.

Part 3:

Q. How important are clothes and fashion to you?

A. I do not care much about clothes or fashion. I prefer to dress in comfy clothes while still
looking presentable and tidy. When it comes to clothing, I prefer to be in a practical look.

Q. What do you believe our clothes convey about us?

A. I believe that the clothes we wear can sometimes reveal a part of our personality or position.
Clothing, for example, may influence the type of employment a person has. It could be a means
of expression for some. Some people are stylish and fashionable, which reflects their creative
personality.

Q. How different are your current clothes from the ones you wore ten years ago?

A. So, I can say that the outfits I wear now are very similar to those I wore around ten years
ago. For casual days or formal attire for work events, I still wear regular pants and a shirt.
However, I believe that as the fashion trend has evolved, so has the type of basic apparel I
wear, particularly when it comes to the style of jeans and shirts. I used to prefer straight-cut
jeans, but now I prefer modern styles like slim-fit clothing.

Bài mẫu band 8+ chủ đề Fashion
1) What type of clothes do you enjoy wearing?

Well, actually, this is kind of a challenging question for me, because I do not attach myself to
any particular style. I would say I’m quite an unpredictable individual. So, my approach to
fashion is pretty much mix-and -match. I would always like to try new combinations and have
fun with it and see how it goes. But at the moment I would say I’m very obsessed with trench
coats. I think they are very versatile with different patterns and silhouettes. They can bring
completely different looks to you in ways that you’ve never thought about before.

2) Do you enjoy buying clothes?

Everyone around me knows I’m a slave for fashion. So, it should come as no surprise
that I take a very serious interest in purchasing clothes. It’s such a huge part of my retail
therapy and it gives me inexplicable joy. You know, the feeling of being able to venture into
boutiques, to find pieces of clothing that really suit you and reflect your personality is
something that gives me absolute thrills. So splurging in clothes is one of my guilty
pleasures, I must say.

3) Has your style of clothing changed compared to 10 years ago?

Definitely, I do think there has been a drastic evolution in my styles of clothing. A decade ago,
I was practically a secondary student, and I don’t think my sense of identity in fashion had
ever begun to develop at that time. Most of my shirts or pants were actually what my mom
bought for me, which I was okay with. And obviously, by now, I have matured and my style has
become much more refined with a lot of attention to detail, silhouettes and more finesses in
general. And I’m very proud of that change.

4) What types of clothes do people in your local area enjoy wearing?

That depends on people’s age. For the elderly or the middle-aged demographics in Hanoi, I
would say their clothing is quite casual and very suitable for the weather. Hanoi’s weather is
very erratic so it’s completely understandable why people would choose to prioritize function.
On the other hand, the youngster, it’s more about aesthetics than practicality. These days,
the youth have an urge to express themselves, and appearance would is such a great way for
them to do so. These days, for people of my age, you can see their clothes tend to have a
very bold designs, lots of colours, different silhouettes. Overall, it’s just more diverse. So I do
think that’s the main difference.

Part 1-style questions

Examiner: Do you enjoy buying clothes?

Pedro: I used to … yes … like most young people I was a bit of a slave to fashion and I’d
always have to buy that must-have shirt or pair of shoes … I’m not so bothered now though …
I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing something old fashioned but I’m not as bothered as I used
to be about what I wear …

Examiner: What kind of clothes do you like to wear?

Marco: I prefer casual clothes actually … I hate getting dressed up for special occasions …
personally I think it’s possible to look good in a pair of jeans … but that’s my opinion … I don’t
think my wife would call me a fashion icon that’s for sure …

Examiner: Are there many clothes shops where you live?

Sylvia: Yes … there are lots in my town … apart from the big chain stores we’ve got a couple of
really nice shops that sell vintage clothes … old clothes but in a classic style that never
really go out of fashion … I love going there …
Part 2-style task

Describe someone you know who dresses well. You should say

 who they are

 how you know them
 what kind of clothes they wear

and say why you like the way they dress.

Tomoko:  I’d like to talk about one of my teachers … Miss Evans … she teaches us English in
the school I go to … we always look forward to seeing what she’s going to wear when our
lessons start … she’s always very well dressed and takes a lot of pride in her
appearance … it’s not that she dresses in very smart clothes … she doesn’t come to
school dressed to kill or anything like that … but what she wears really suits her … and she
has a great sense of style as well … we often ask her where she gets some of her clothes and
most of the time they’re just off the peg … and she says she’s not interested in designer
labels or anything like that … she doesn’t seem too concerned about keeping up with the
latest fashion … she just wears clothes that are timeless … yes … Miss Evans is the person I
think looks great in the clothes she wears …

Part 3-style questions

Examiner: What factors do you think affect the clothes we choose to wear?

Maki: It depends … where we are or where we’re going is a big factor … if you are going out to
a club or party you’re going to dress for the occasion … and then there are those who think
it’s important to look like they’re on trend … they’ll want to wear the latest fashions … there are
lots of factors really …

Examiner: What kind of things determine what is in fashion and what we should be wearing?
Martin: I suppose the big fashion houses and fashion shows must have an effect but the
clothes you see on the catwalk don’t always reflect what normal people wear … so I suppose
it will be things like what singers are wearing in videos or models are wearing in magazines …
that kind of thing …

Examiner: Is it possible to look good without spending lots of money on clothes?

Corinna: I’m sure it is … yes … I suppose it’s about having an eye for what looks good …
knowing how to mix and match different items of clothing that go well together … I think you
can pick up great bargains in charity shops … sometimes for youngsters even hand-me-
downs can look good …

Describe clothes you wear on special occasions
You should say:
o What they are
o Where you buy them
o Why you wear them

And what people think about them

I prefer to dress in comfortable clothes and feel so most of the time. I prefer to wear smart, so
the casual slacks, white shirts, and a blazer are for the majority of special occasions. Suits and
formal shoes are essential components for my entire appearance at times when the social
gathering I attend requires a higher level of formality.
Since I’m always looking to save up, most of my casual clothes, even the smart ones, come
from marketplaces and common fashion brands like Zara or Uniqlo. However, I have greater
expectations when it comes to my formal attire, particularly in terms of materials and their
longevity. As a result, I usually purchase my shirts from a reputable fashion house. I’ve ordered
clothes online for special occasions before, but I prefer to try them on first and see how they fit
on me. I must admit that I enjoy the variety of options available at the stores.
My family enjoys seeing me in formal attire since it complements my features quite a bit. My
build is on the slimmer side. Not many find any issues in my attire, most they have said was that
I can look rather uptight. My friends, on the other hand, seem to enjoy this personality of mine,
manifesting through my clothes.
I choose to stick to the formal way of dressing. I prefer to dress to please myself rather than
wear the clothes that others would choose to follow trends, or dress too casual.

and hung it up behind the door. It was hot in the office, so I took my jacket off as well. During
my lunchbreak I had a look round the shops. I saw a nice jacket in one shop and tried it on, but
it didn’t fit me — it was too small and they didn’t have a bigger size.
