BUILDING MATERIAL
•The unusually refined exposed brick and concrete construction reflects the architect's prevailing commitment to the
modernist idiom.

• The concrete pergola accentuates the jagged break down of the building surfaces rather than forming an effective

CLIMATE CONSIDERATION
❑ Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate.
❑ Rainfall average of 3 days per month in summer.
❑ Hours of daylight: 13-14hr in summer.
❑ In winter season, Rainfall: 9 – 10 days per month.
Designers said, “While we are absolutely trying to innovate upon the design and technology of low-cost housing,
we’re more concerned with the general ‘system’ that surrounds housing in the context of informal South African
settlements.” He went on to add, “The Empower Shack project seeks to address these larger challenges, and in doing
so, hopefully, changes not just the built landscape of places like Khayelitsha, but also the social, political and
economic structures that shape residents lives.”
