CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter will discuss the context of the problem,
the statement of the problem, the purpose and description,
the objectives of the project, its scope and limitation and
the significance of the project.
Project Context
The Computer Laboratory Digital Logbook project aims to
develop a digital system that will replace the traditional
logbook used in computer laboratories. In most educational
institutions, logbooks are used to keep track of the usage
of computer equipment, users, and other resources in the
laboratory.
However, these logbooks are often outdated,
inefficient, and prone to errors. With the advancement of
technology, there is a need to develop a more modern and
effective system that can streamline the management of
computer laboratory resources. The project aims to have
digital logbook in the computer laboratory of Passi City
College to keep track of each person who has previously used
the computer.
With the increasing demand for computer usage in
schools, computer laboratories have become a common facility
PASSI CITY COLLEGE
City of Passi, Iloilo
School of Information and Communication Technology
in educational institutions. These laboratories provide
students with access to computer systems and other necessary
equipment to aid their learning.
Managing and monitoring the usage of these computer
laboratories can be a challenging task for the
administration. One of the essential tasks is keeping track
of the usage of the computer systems and equipment by
students and faculty members. A manual logbook system is
often used to record these details, but it can be tedious
and time-consuming.
To address this issue, the Computer Laboratory Digital
Logbook will be develop that can record and monitor the
usage of computer laboratories in an educational
institution. This digital system will provide a more
efficient and accurate way of keeping track of computer lab
usage.
The project will develop a user-friendly digital
platform accessible by students and faculty members. The
system will enable the recording of various details,
including the user's name, time and date of usage, duration
of usage, and computer system used. This system's
implementation will ensure that computer laboratories are
used efficiently and can help identify any misuse of
PASSI CITY COLLEGE
City of Passi, Iloilo

equipment, ensuring that the computer laboratory's resources
are used optimally.
The project's primary objective is to develop a
computer laboratory digital logbook system that is easy to
use and efficient in managing computer lab usage. The system
will enable the administration to keep track of the usage of
computer labs by students and faculty members effectively.
Objectives of the Study
General Objective
To develop a Computer Laboratory Digital Logbook that
can efficiently and accurately monitor the utilization and
maintenance of computer laboratory equipment and determine
its acceptability.
Specific Objectives
1. design a Computer Logbook for Passi City College. The
application will allow the user to view the information
and contents of the computer’s previous user’s
identity.
2. determine its acceptability in terms of its usability
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The system will be designed to record the use of
computers in the laboratory, including the date and
PASSI CITY COLLEGE
City of Passi, Iloilo
School of Information and Communication Technology
time of use, the name of the user. The system will not
include any other features beyond the aforementioned
purpose.
The development of the system will follow the SDLC -
Agile Model Method, which will guide the researchers in the
iterative and incremental development of the system.
The system will be accessible only on the computers in
the laboratory and won’t require a unique login credential
to access the system. The users will be allowed to record
their computer usage in the logbook, but they will not be
allowed to modify or delete any existing entries.
The evaluation of the usability of the Computer
Laboratory Digital Logbook system will be conducted by the
laboratory staff and randomly chosen students. The
evaluation will be based on a standardized questionnaire
checklist, which will assess the usability and effectiveness
of the system.
This study will be conducted solely in the computer
laboratory of the institution where the system will be
implemented. The timeline of this study will be from the
first semester of the academic year 2023-2024.

The following terms used in this study were defined to
ensure clarity and better understanding:
Computer Laboratory. A computer laboratory is a room
equipped with computer hardware and software used for
educational purposes, such as computer-assisted instruction
or scientific research. It is a designated space within an
academic institution or research facility that provides
access to computer resources for students, faculty, and
staff.
Digital Logbook. A digital logbook is an electronic
record-keeping system used to track and document laboratory
activities and experiments. It is a tool used to record and
store data in a digital format, making it easier to
organize, search, and analyse data. In this study, the
digital logbook refers to the specific system developed for
computer laboratories, allowing users to log and manage
their activities.
Usability. Usability refers to the quality of a user's

This systematic review examines the effectiveness of
Computer Laboratory Digital Logbook system. The authors
reviewed several studies that have used digital logbooks in
computer laboratory settings and found that they can improve
the effectiveness of computer laboratory by providing
students with a platform for recording their observations
and collaborating with their peers. The review also
identified several challenges to implementing digital
logbooks, including issues related to privacy and security.

COMPUTER-BASED LOGBOOK FOR SURGICAL REGISTRARS
The digital logbook system is designed to mimic the
existing paper logbook used by trainees. It retains the same
categories and information required for recording
procedures. The logbook starts with an initial registration

page where trainees enter their name and a unique
identification number assigned by the College. These details
are automatically included in every procedure entry for easy
recall and analysis. Trainees also provide additional
information such as their parent hospital, supervising
surgeons, and the hospital of their current rotation. The
data entry page allows trainees to add records, with certain
fields like supervising surgeon, level of supervision,
hospital, and procedure type being selected from predefined
options. This ensures accuracy and prevents
miscategorization and transcription errors. The logbook
includes fields for complications, diagnosis, pathology, and
allows trainees to enter any other relevant information for
each procedure.

Electronic Logbook for Space System Integration & Test
Operations
E-Logbook is an electronic logbook system designed to
replace paper documentation in aerospace I&T operations. It
has been successfully utilized during the integration and
testing of the large area telescope (LAT) in the GLAST
satellite at SLAC. Over 41,000 records have been created
without data corruption, demonstrating its reliability. E-
Logbook features a shift log for improved project awareness
and a configuration log for instant reporting on the space
system's I&T state. Its ergonomic design with graphical user
interfaces reduces human error and enhances management
oversight. Operators and management prefer E-Logbook over
paper logbooks, recommending its use in the aerospace

Digital Logbook System for the Management of Medical Records
The study by A. M. K. Al-Mahmood et al. (2020) focuses
on the development and evaluation of a digital logbook
system for managing medical records in a hospital setting.
The system aims to address the limitations of traditional
paper-based medical records by providing features such as
patient registration, medical history, medication records,
diagnostic test results, and treatment plans. The study
demonstrates that the digital logbook system is user-
friendly, efficient, and improves the accuracy and
completeness of patient records. It concludes that the
system has the potential to enhance healthcare delivery and
patient outcomes by providing a more efficient and accurate
means of documenting and managing patient information.
