PREPARING FEASIBLE AND PRACTICAL BUDGET

RECALL WHAT YOU KNOW

In your notebook, draw a two - column table. Mark the first column “My Needs”
and the second column “My Wants”. Then list down the items you spend on in the
proper column.
Do you spend a lot on necessities, or do you spend more on things you want
but not really needed?

DISCOVER AND LEARN

From the previous lesson, you have learned how to allocate budget by
knowing the steps and its components. This time you will be able to learn how to
prepare a budget in the most practical way.
The actual task of preparing a budget is easy. Members of the family must
compromise if they want the family budget to work. Flexible spending is often the
place you start when preparing a simple family budget.
These are the things that we should consider in preparing a feasible and
practical budget:
A. Managing Family Resources Efficiently

• Inform all the members of the family about the budget.

• Adjust your budget, as necessary. Keep within the amount allocated for
budget items.
• Choose a simple lifestyle that you can sustain with your earnings.
• Buy only things that are needed.
• Schedule your expenses.
• Follow a shopping and marketing schedule.
• Avoid making unscheduled, unplanned purchases especially at a store you
are not familiar with.
• Teach the children to spend their allowance wisely.
• Conserve energy and other utilities.
• Recycle or reuse materials.
• Repair appliances and furniture as needed.

Competency: 1.2 Prepares feasible and practical budget
TLE6HE-0b-4
• Take good care of your belongings.
• Buy products that are of good quality and reasonable price.
• Develop the habit of walking short distances.

B. Prioritizing Needs Over Wants

Our needs and wants motivate us to work hard. They encourage and inspire
us to get involved in productive endeavours that will help our families live better.
It is important for family members to clearly distinguish their needs from their wants.
In family budgeting, we must prioritize our needs and not wants.

The key to good money management is separating needs from wants. If you
are not sure if an item is a need or a want, do without it for a period of time. If after
that time you truly cannot live without it, it may be a need. However, even the
essentials like shelter or transportation involve a want vs. need calculation. For
instance, you may have evaluated all possible transportation methods for you to
get to work and determined that you need to purchase a car. Fine, but which car
you buy is another choice you make.
Do you buy the more expensive SUV that you want, or will a less expensive,
more economical vehicle meet your need? Almost everything you buy involves a
want vs. need determination and ultimately, how you make these choices will
determine if you reach your goals or not.

Tips in Wise Spending of Your Income

✓Make a list of all the things needed at home and their specification.
✓Compare the prices of the products to be bought. Avoid buying things with
higher prices than usual.
✓Buy in bulk the things that are needed everyday.
✓Buy fruits and vegetables in season.
✓Know the substitute ingredients for expensive items.
✓Be familiar with the stores offering lowest prices.
✓Go to a store where you can be assured of good quality and standard price.
✓Be sure to stick to your shopping or grocery list.
