INTRODUCTION
SEAMANSHIP is the art of operating a ship or boat.
It involves topics and development of specialized skills
including, navigation and international maritime law,
weather, meteorology and forecasting. The word
seamanship is generally defined in dictionaries as “The skill
of a seaman.” A seaman is defined in the same sources as a
mariner as distinguished from landsman .The word seaman
is intended to apply only to one who regardless of his actual
rank is versed or skilled in the art of seamanship. As in any
art it can be attained only by practice and experience. There
are certain principles, techniques, and descriptions that may
be learned from the books which will help the seaman to
develop his skill faster and to learn the details of his art more
readily.
Art covers a wide variety of subjects for seagoing
profession which lies wholly within the province of the deck
department, primarily charged with the practical operation of
the ship. It deals with boat and ship handling, cargo, ship
maintenance, trim and stability of the vessel, emergencies
such as fire fighting, life saving, damage control and Rules of
the Road.
However a seaman`s job is similar. A ship is in reality, a
floating community. You are called upon to play a part in the
smooth running this community will depend upon what you
know and how you apply your knowledge. The most
important attribute of a seaman is a feeling of responsibility
for his job.
