MID-TERM EXAM
HEALTH COMMUNICATION
1. In a communication process it cannot always run smoothly, sometimes various kinds
of obstacles can also be found. To be able to deal with these obstacles properly, an
individual must understand the source of the problems faced, starting with
understanding the elements of communication. By understanding each element one can
easily find effective methods of communicating. There are many elements of
communication, but in general they can be divided into 5 elements of communication.
The first element is the communicator, meaning the person conveying the message to
the communicant. To be able to convey the message well someone must have an
understanding of the process of good communication. This consists of understanding
how to convey messages properly using verbal communication, being able to create a
comfortable and safe atmosphere so as to create mutual trust through non-verbal
communication, and the ability to listen because two-way communication will be more
effective than communication that is only conveyed one way only. A communicator
must also understand that every individual has a very diverse background both in terms
of religion, culture, race, and habits, so they must be patient and persistent and able to
adjust to the person they are talking to. The second element is the message, in a
communication of course there is a message to be conveyed to achieve the desired
communication goals. A message can be conveyed directly face to face or via text
messages. If the message is conveyed face to face, the language used must be
considered not to contain SARA, use offensive language, and so on so as not to cause
conflict. Meanwhile, if the message conveyed is in the form of writing, then the choice
of words, punctuation, and language rules used must be considered so as not to cause
misunderstandings. The third element is the media, a message conveyed through a
particular container or means to the communicant. It can be through voice if the
communication is done directly, through electronic or printed media if it is done
indirectly. Good media must be adapted to the circumstances, communication goals,
and communicant targets. The fourth element is the communicant, namely the person
receiving the message. A communicant must be able to receive a message and process
it. Therefore, a good person must have the nature and mind that is open to input and not
be stubborn, but still be able to be selective about the input that is given. That way, the
message given can be well received and the fifth element of communication, namely
the resulting feedback, can be in accordance with the expectations and goals of the
communication process. Together these five elements, when understood and applied
properly, effective and smooth communication can be formed.
2. In my opinion, in determining what media and methods to use in a health
communication, it must be adapted to the circumstances. One of them, in choosing the
method used, a communicator must look at the number of communicants who will
receive the message they want to convey. If the number of communicants is only a
person, two-way face to face communication or interpersonal communication, such as
counseling, can be used. If the number of communicants is 5-20 people, small groups
can be used, 21-200 people use large groups and public communication for more than
200 communicants. In addition to the number of communicants, communicators must
also adjust to the time they have, the level of effectiveness in conveying messages, and
the purpose of the communication. For media, it can be adjusted to the communication
method applied. For example, in interpersonal communication maybe the media used
is only paper and pen, in the small group method you can use flip charts, learning
videos, PPT, etc. and in public communication, print media or social media can be used.
