Preface
COMPUTERS TODAY is a series of eight books for Classes 1 to 8 plus the Teacher’s Manual
1 to 8. This series conforms to the requirements of the Curriculum Framework. Based on
Windows 10 and MS Office 2019, this course introduces students to the latest interface and
the associated features. The progression of the series ensures that the pedagogical needs of
the students are met.
Key features of the Coursebooks:
• Word Web explains the difficult words.
• You Should Know gives interesting facts about the topic.
• Quick Way highlights all the important keyboard shortcuts for the menu commands.
• Exercise at the end of each chapter reinforces the understanding of the topic.
• Research Project integrates Computer Science with other subjects.
• Challenge Yourself is based on logical reasoning and information technology for classes
3 to 8.
All the books in this series have sections that can be considered for assessments.
The teacher’s manuals for Computers Today series are planned to assist teachers in multiple
ways. Our objective is to comfortably fit this programme into the teacher’s teaching goals. By
using the most up-to-date textbook available and a mix of ideas, we hope that students will
discover the importance of learning computer science from early stages.
A detailed overview of the key features of the teacher’s manual and a concise period plan are
given in the pages that follow.
Key features of the Teacher’s Manual:
• Period Plan has a comprehensive table that acts as a suggested guideline for the allocation
of theory and practical periods for each topic in the session.
• Lesson Plans can be used to reinforce critical thinking and real-life applications of the
concepts in students. These are given for each chapter and they act as a springboard of
ideas. The lesson plans include:
° Interesting teaching activities given against each topic
° Well defined learning outcomes listed along with the teaching activities so that the aim
of teaching through each activity is clear
° Carefully mapped projects and suggested assessments for each pedagogical level to
enable students to explore additional features of the software applications taught
° Additional Teacher’s Notes enables the teachers to pick additional topics/references
while teaching in the classroom
• Answers to coursebook questions have answers for the coursebook questions
• An additional set of test papers and worksheets with answer keys for each chapter to
ease off the checking and the evaluation process.
To meet all the learning objectives and to provide a holistic form of imparting education,
the questions in various sections are based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy. This ensures that the
concept understanding is tested at six different levels, namely Knowledge, Comprehension,
Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation.
Here is the suggestive period plan for Grade 7.

All this material is prepared with an intention to help the teachers get the most out of their
class time. Each section in the teacher’s manuals is prepared with the perspective of delivering
it as an incredible teaching tool and resource.
We welcome constructive feedback and suggestions to improve these books in the subsequent
editions.
Dear teachers,

By now you very well know that it has been a constant effort of Collins/Sunrise Publications to
familiarize and equip students with the latest trends in computer technology. We have given
all the important information in our coursebooks that the students should explore and learn.
The initiative to give the latest Challenge Yourself, in the coursebooks and teacher’s manuals,
was the first step to let the children prepare through this for competitive exams in its entirety.
While we understand the limited time that all of you have for the completion of course
curriculum; the inquisitive minds are always on a look-out for some food for substance! It is
for this reason that we are giving additional links as recommended by Microsoft for additional
training material on MS Office for the students:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/students/resources
The teachers who want to give extra training to the students on various Microsoft topics can
follow the link given below:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education
Both the links would give learning a new dimension by giving extra practice to the students.
The links given here are an add-on to the general curriculum followed across various boards.
It is completely at your discretion to share it with the students or follow the link while doing
classroom training.
We hope together we can empower the young minds to write their own success stories!

For example: Cray-1, Deep Blue
3. Hybrid computers: These computers work both on analog and digital signals. These computers can
effectively process the input and the output in both the variants. These computers are best suited for
simulators where the calculations and operations can be performed by the digital component and
changeable quantities can be measured using the analog component.
4. Mainframes computers: Mainframes are huge and very powerful computers. They can handle
thousands of users at a time. Mainframe computers are very expensive. They are used in large
organizations such as railway stations, banks and hospitals.
5. Embedded computers: These are special purpose computers. These are designed to do a dedicated
task. These can perform only pre-defined tasks. Therefore, these computers are enclosed in special
devices meant for real-time applications. For example, the ATM machines have special purpose
computer specifically designed to deposit and withdraw money.

E 1. We can enter a formula for a specified set of values by typing equal to (=) sign in the formula bar or in
the cell where you want the result to be displayed followed by the formula. For example, if we want to
calculate the sum of numbers in the cells B1, B2, B3 and B4 then we need to follow the following steps:
• S
tep 1: Click the cell in which we want the sum to be displayed. Take it as B5 in this case. You will
see B5 in the name box.
• S
tep 2: Type the formula beginning with an equal to (=) sign. As we type the formula in the cell, it is
also seen in the Formula Bar.
• Step 3: Click or press the Enter key. The result will be displayed in the cell B5.
2. Excel gives us an advantage of auto editing a result. As we change the data in the cells with the input
values, the result automatically changes in the cell where formula was entered.
3. Strings are the text values that are a set of characters on which we cannot perform arithmetic
operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.
4. If we see a couple of ‘#’ in a cell, it means the column is not wide enough to display the resultant
number. It is not considered as a formula error. In this case, increase the width of the column so that
the complete number is displayed.
5. The AutoSum feature is one of the most commonly used features of MS Excel. It automatically adds
the numbers in the selected range of cells. It can also be used to find the average, maximum value,
minimum value, etc. for the selected range of cells.

most recent entries usually appear first and the oldest entries appear last. A user can use a blog to
write about any particular topic that fascinates him or about any particular area of interest. A blog is
updated frequently and regularly. This makes a blog somewhat like a journal or a diary.
2. The social networking websites are the websites that serve as an online community of Internet users.
A social networking service allows people, who share interests or real-life connections, to build social
networks or social relations It consists of a representation of each user’s information, his social links
and a variety of additional services. The three examples of social networking websites are:
• My Space
• Facebook
• Twitter
3. A newsgroup is an online discussion group where information about a particular topic is exchanged.
It is a source of both information and communication. In a newsgroup, messages are posted on a
bulletin board where any member of a newsgroup can read and respond to them.

Steps to create list:
• First Initialise the list. • Then append each number to the list.
• And in Last Print out the list.
3. A Python variable name must follow the given rules for naming:
• The first character must be a letter, A through Z (uppercase or lowercase letters may be used) or
underscore character
• There should not be any space in between any two characters
• Variable name cannot start with numbers
• Variables are case- sensitive (Result, result and RESULT are three different variables)
• Variable Name cannot be reserved word (Python Keyword)
• It should not contain any special character like @, &, % etc.
4. What is the difference between lists and tuples.
Lists are enclosed in square brackets ([ and]) and tuples in parentheses (( and )).
The difference between the two is that we cannot change the elements of a tuple once it is
assigned whereas we can change the elements of a list.
