2.131(b)(1)
Handling of animals.
On the morning of July 13, 2023, a male Asiatic Black Bear escaped from his enclosure into an indoor hallway behind the
exhibit through a door that was not properly locked. An emergency code red, indicating an animal was out of its enclosure
was called once the escape was discovered (approximately 1-2 hours later). The animal was coaxed back into his
enclosure without the use of sedation or force. The animal never travelled beyond the hallway, which is a secure,
enclosed indoor space. Animals that escape from their enclosures may suffer from stress or injury, or may cause injury to
nearby animals or humans. Correct by today, July 20, 2023, by ensuring that animals are handled carefully in a manner
that does not result in escape, trauma, stress, or unnecessary discomfort. A complete evaluation and debrief of the
incident was completed prior to the inspection, and the facility has implemented corrective actions. No additional
corrective measures are necessary at this time.
3.127(c)
Facilities, outdoor.
The enclosure housing 3 adult male red river hogs contains a large amount of standing water and mud at the entrance to
the shelter building. The animals enter the building through one entrance, around which there is deep mud. Inside the
entrance, the floor is cement, but there is a large accumulation of shallow standing water and mud covering approximately
half of the area. The animals have access to a large outdoor area that is dry, and an indoor sleeping area that is also dry.
Adequate drainage of enclosures is important for sanitation and cleanliness. Inadequately drained areas may contribute to
proliferation of insects, may harbor germs, and may cause animals to develop foot or skin conditions due to excessive
moisture on the legs. Correct by August 1, 2023 by ensuring that animal enclosures are adequately drained so that
excess water is rapidly eliminated.
This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the Director.
