Westbengal State Projects

The document lists hydropower projects in West Bengal and their installed capacities. It divides the projects into three sections - those built by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, central public sector units, and private developers. A total of 533.975 MW of hydropower is installed through various conventional hydroelectric and micro hydroelectric projects ranging from 400 kW to 160 MW. The document also estimates West Bengal's total hydroelectric potential at 995.32 MW through additional large, medium, and small projects.

Hydropower is a renewable energy resource because it uses the earth's water cycle to generate electricity. The movement of flowing water during
its course from upper to lower topography on earth's surface creates kinetic energy and same can be converted into electricity. The artificially
created storage dams also are used as potential source of hydropower.

Hydro power projects are broadly divided in two groups:

                    (i) Conventional Hydropower Projects

                    (ii) Pumped Storage Projects

The first category allows water to flow into the river itself after power generation and the second category utilises gravitational potential to store
energy, having two bodies of water, at different elevations. There is a general pattern all over the world to define Conventional Hydro power as
Small & Major Hydro on the basis of Power Output.Small hydro projects (SHPs), in general, include Micro/Mini/Small categories of Hydel
projects.

A. Hydro-Power Installed
B. Total Hydro Power Potential Identified

SL. No. Type of Hydro Power Projects Estimate Capacity(MW)

I Large/ medium range conventional Hydro-Electric projects 628

Small Hydro-Electric Projects (capacity less or equal to 25MW) 367.32
Total (B) = 995.32MW
