AN EARLY STROLL AROUND THE CITY

1. Morning
1.1. Breakfast
Get acquainted with Hanoi (and Vietnam) by going on an
early morning stroll. Grab a banh mi (Vietnamese baguette
sandwich) and a ca phe sua da(Vietnamese iced milk coffee)
from a sidewalk stall and just walk. If you head out around
05:00 a.m., you’ll be able to witness the city wake up. Head to the
Old Quarter, which is the historical and commercial center of the
capital. There are 16 streets here you can explore, with each
street named after what the majority of the shops specialize in.

1.2. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

After your breakfast, start walking towards the Ho Chi Minh

Mausoleum. It will take you around 20 minutes to get there.
Ho Chi Minh, or Uncle Ho as the locals refer to him, was
Vietnam’s president from 1945-1969 and was a key figure in
the Vietnam War, under whose leadership Vietnam finally
gained independence. Inside a glass case lies the embalmed
body of Uncle Ho so you can pay your respects and then
walk around the square and park outside. You may even catch
some locals doing Tai Chi. Don’t be afraid to join them, they
will be more than happy to help you learn the movements.

1.3. Hoa Lo Prison

Carry on walking to Hoa Lo Prison, known as the Hanoi Hilton. This was built by the French to
punish Vietnamese political prisoners and later used by the Vietnamese to hold American prisoners of
war. A famous example is Senator John McCain, and you can still find his uniform on display. The
prison is a little haunting. There are many mannequins depicting scenes of what life was like inside the
prison walls, and it is not for the faint of heart.

Time to Pho
2. Lunch
Address: 49 Bát Đàn, Cửa Đông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
Since you woke up early, it’s good to have a slightly early lunch to replenish all that energy spent
from walking around and sweating thanks to the heat. Grab a xe om (motorbike taxi), use either Uber
or Grab apps, or hail yourself a motorbike to head to your next destination: Pho Gia Truyen on 49 Bat
Dan Street. Motorbikes are the best way to get around here as they can zigzag their way through traffic.
If you opt for a car taxi, you may be stuck in one place for hours.

Picture 5 - Pho of Viet Nam

Pho Gia Truyen is where you can find the best pho in all the land. Pho is the national dish of
Vietnam and one you must try. It’s made of three components: a flavorful broth, noodles and some type
of meat, typically beef. If you are vegetarian, just order the vegetarian version by saying “chay.”

More sightseeing
3. Afternoon
3.1. Explore the Old Quarter
Now is the time to take the time to explore the 36 streets of Hanoi Old Quarter, and the best way is to
walk.
If you are not careful walking in these chessboard streets, you will easily get lost. The long street
connects the street, the alley connects to the alley, the house next to each other. Walking in the old
streets will see all the life of Hanoians.
Each street sells its product and many tiny shops. Here, still find old jobs such as sidewalk barbering,
buying long hair, making ao dai, making seals, repairing clock, etc. Many of these works are about to
disappear following the time. Walking on the streets, you can stop at Luong Van Can to make a cup of
black bean sweet soup to drink or make an iced tea in a small alley.

3.2. Enjoy a water puppet show

The water puppet shows of the Thang Long
puppet theatre are about to begin. Each show
takes about an hour, but it is very interesting.
Most of the visitors who come to see it are
the touring tourists, the rest are children. The
legendaries or traditional activities of the
people in North Vietnam are performed in a
puppet show on the water. It does not take
long, but it is fun.

Relax by the lake

4. Evening
4.1. Hoan Kiem Lake
Walk over to Hoan Kiem Lake, which is not so far from your location, and enjoy a stroll around the
cool premises. It’s a popular hangout spot for locals and tourists alike. In the middle of the lake is an
island on which Ngoc Son temple is built, and connecting it to the land is a gorgeous scarlet bridge. It’s
extremely photogenic.

4.2. Find the tranquillity of Hanoi

The night streets in Hanoi have typical beauty: deep and peaceful. Not noisy during 24 hours like
Saigon, Hanoi day and night with two different appearances.
After the day’s hustle of the day, since 11:00 pm, the streets have begun to be empty. The Autumn
season has been cold enough for passersby to put on a thin sweater and a light scarf. Night mist is
hanging on the streets, under the golden light of the street lamps.
The nightlife in Hanoi is quiet, fragrant with the scent of milk flowers and magnolia blossoms.
Sometimes, you can hear soft lyrical music from the windows.
At night, walk in the heart of Hanoi to see all the beauty and excitement of this city. The photo artists
have come to shoot for night pictures. 36 streets with a simple atmosphere. Hoang Dieu, Phan Dinh
Phung, and Tran Phu streets look more lovely under beautiful night lights.

HANOI, RENOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT

The year 1975 puts an important milestone in the history of Vietnam in general, and Hanoi in particular.
The general election to the 4th National Assembly (25th April 1976) brought Vietnam to reunification.
Hanoi became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Hanoi enjoyed some advantages, such as political and geographical unity, the support from the whole
nation, the rich labour and intellectual resources and the economic and cultural cooperation with
foreign countries.
The 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (in December 1986) strategically proclaimed a
desire for renovation. The 10th Congress of the Hanoi Communist Party Cell reaffirmed the realization
of the national strategy. Hanoi gradually developed a multi-sector economy. The policy of a household
economy and new cooperatives in the rural areas has changed the face of the Hanoi peripheries. Life
has become better. The democratisation, civil society and the rule of law have created good
opportunities for the development of commodity production and trading.
The struggles against corruption and social evils have been successful. Investments, international
cooperation and the mobilisation of the domestic resources have been achieving positive results. Hanoi
has been working effectively towards industrialisation and modernisation. Hanoi, the political, cultural,
scientific and economic centre of the nation, has been promoting its intellectual potentiality in order to
advance.

Hanoi is the pride of Vietnamese

people
