MIDTERM EXAMINATION

GE STS – Science, Technology and Society

2ND Semester, A.Y. 2022-2023

NAME: Mianne Jahne S. Ambatali

YEAR AND SECTION: BSED – ENG 2A

1) How was the concept of technology cross the humanity in this movie?
- When their leader is on the verge of death, artificial intelligence researchers upload his
consciousness into a computer. This concept of technology has crossed humanity in the sense that it
has allowed a person to survive the death of his body. The person would simply be a virtual
representation of the real person; in other words, the person would be in his virtual form. It was a
good thing for that individual and his loved ones, but it was not for others since they were afraid of
what that person's uploaded consciousness might do. They were concerned that they might act
inhumanely and destroy the Earth and everything on it. People were debating whether it was a good
thing or a terrible thing. This kind of technological concept has thrown everyone into disarray.

2) Do you think that the plot of this movie is anchored on scientific principles?
- No, I don't believe this film's plot is based on scientific concepts. The leader of R.I.F.T believes that
constructing an omnipotent computer with a human personality is a poor concept, according to the
film. Scientific principles are broad scientific laws that describe how something occurs or functions.
Will clearly does not explain how his technology works to the others in the film, leading them to
believe that what he is doing is not good. Because Will does not give a brief description of whatever
he is doing, there is a lack of understanding and communication in the video. But, in the end, all of
our assumptions about Will's intentions were incorrect.

3) What are the concepts of a good life and human flourishing presented in the movie?
- When Dr. Will was granted another chance to live his life, the movie presented the concepts of a
decent life and human flourishing. When his wife uploaded his consciousness into the quantum
realm, he survived the death of his body. The project has built a computer. Dr. Will uses his
newfound great talents to create a technological utopia in a lonely desert settlement called
Brightwood in his virtual form. He is the driving force behind the development of game-changing
breakthroughs in medicine, energy, biology, and nanotechnology. A sample of Will's sentient nano-
particles is safeguarded by the Faraday cage around the garden at the end of the film. While his acts
may have appeared frightening and unethical, they were all in the hopes of realizing Evelyn's ideal
of an ideal society and thereby establishing a good life.

4) If happen that you and a member of your family would have a life-threatening disease/disorder, will you
avail the technology of Dr. Will Caster? Why or why not?
- No, I will not be using Dr. Will Caster's technology if one of my family members has a life-
threatening sickness or disorder. Yes, it was a positive thing since the person's body will live on after
death, but the individual will only exist in a virtual form or as a replica of the real person. There
were numerous possibilities that might occur if things like this will continue to happen because we
will never know what that uploaded individual will do as time passes. That person's power would be
limited, and he can choose to utilize it for malicious purposes or for good things. We never know
what someone's mind is going through or how their mind functions, which is why I will not avail Dr.
Will Caster's technology.
