The Sanguine Temperament
Hello, Sunshine! You are friendly, fun-loving, and optimistic--always up for something new and
exciting. You love a spur-of-the-moment adventure—whether traveling to a new city, meeting new
people, or discovering a new idea. Sanguines live in the present moment, and enjoy it to the fullest!
Sanguines are the most extraverted of all the temperaments: active, inquisitive, and energized by
being with people. You are attentive to other people, place a high value on kindness, and are
generous. Your enthusiasm is contagious, you can be a charismatic leader. Sanguines excel in
marketing, sales, entrepeneurship, communications, and social media. To the ancient Greeks,
sanguines were air: moving, changing, blowing one way and then another.
If you are a sanguine, then you are most likely the life of the party. You are funny and relish the
limelight. You are affectionate, enjoy social activities, and make friends easily. You are imaginative
and creative, and are often the one who enthusiastically promotes new ideas on the job. You wear
your emotions on your sleeve, but you are always quick to "forgive and forget." As quickly as you
discover a new hobby or pursuit, you can also lose interest. On occasion, your sense of humor can
get out of hand. You can be easily distracted, struggle with follow-through, and are sometimes
accused of being superficial and forgetful. In relationships, you are affectionate, eager to please
and forgiving.Your generosity and desire to please others can sometimes result in being
overcommitted.
The Sanguine / Choleric
Yours is a dynamic combination. You are optimistic, enthusiastic, extraverted and fun-loving
(sanguine) yet also capable of strong leadership, follow-through, and juggling many projects
(choleric). Yours is a happy combination of charm and decisiveness, creativity and analytical skill,
friendliness and focus.
Your ability to connect with people balances out the domineering and relentless temperament of
the pure choleric. You value relationships highly and make friends easily. You are insightful,
enthusiastic, and affectionate; your sanguine capacity for dealing with people, combined with the
leadership skills of the choleric, make you an excellent manager of people. You are also capable of
constancy, dedication, and serious undertakings -- though at times you may have been
underestimated, due to your often humorous and light-hearted manner. You not only are capable
of creative inspiration, but also you will find within yourself the persistence and drive needed to
carry out your inspirations. You have the talent and creativity to be a successful entrepeneur, a
charismatic leader, or to excel in sales and marketing.
St. Peter may have been a sanguine-choleric. He was impulsive, enthusiastic, protective, talkative,
frequently wrong -- yet a heroic and passionate leader of the flock.
But watch out for allowing your weaknesses to dominate; temperament blend can exhibit the worst
of the two temperaments: overly talkative, brassy, opinionated, loud, rash, swift to jump to
conclusions, and forgetful. If intellectual depth is lacking, this temperament mixture can become
superficial, bossy, and intolerant. The high-spirited humor of the sanguine can become biting and
hurtful when combined with the unforgiving, vengeful nature of the poorly formed choleric. If
pleasure-seeking and impulsivity are not contained, the sanguine-choleric may wind up with a lax
conscience that justifies his weaknesses, ultimately resulting in habitual sin. Easily captivated by
exciting new projects or opportunities, the sanguine-choleric should watch out for his tendency to
come up with great ideas, put everyone to work, and then drop the ball when the project gets
tiresome.

The Sanguine / Phlegmatic
If you are a sanguine-phlegmatic, you are blessed with an extremely likeable personality.
You are an extraverted, optimistic, warm individual who readily connects with others and is well-
liked by all. You are fun-loving, enthusiastic, friendly, and inspiring (sanguine), but somewhat
cautious at times, and also highly sensitive to other people's moods, emotions, likes and dislikes
(phlegmatic). You desire harmony in relationships and deeply value your friendships. You place a
high value on doing what is kind.
You are easy-going, creative, imaginative, caring, generous, flexible, and spontaneous. You may be
considered "emotional" because of your easily aroused feelings, your attentiveness to relationships,
and your tender heart. In a relationship, you may gravitate toward a logical, organized, strong-
willed and decisive partner--someone who makes decisions quickly and provides strong moral
certitude and structure to your life. You can be easily influenced by others' opinions. Many
sanguine-phlegmatics are drawn to teaching, parenting, the helping professions, and volunteer
works for the betterment of society. You place a high priority on your personal search for meaning
and self-identity, but this search always includes your friends and family and your community.
Your weaknesses are superficiality, indecisiveness, disorganization, and procrastination. Often you
find it difficult to know exactly how to state what you mean, or how to express yourself logically;
this contributes to a tendency to talk more than is needed or to provide more detail than is
necessary. You may find yourself blurting out something without thinking, or spending too much
time seeking advice only to find yourself more confused than you started, or oversleeping every day
this week -- despite all the best of intentions. You may find yourself becoming overcommitted
because you simply can't say "no" and have a strong need to be liked/please people. A typical
sanguine-phlegmatic trick is to spend too much money shopping or (better yet) dining out with
friends, and then to put off balancing the checkbook (too much work, too many other distractions)
until it is hopelessly behind. Now you are overwhelmed with everything that has piled up! You may
complain half-heartedly, blame circumstances, or go shopping. You may have a tendency to
personalize things. This can lead to misunderstandings. For example, if the boss says, "We are not
meeting our quotas," the sanguine-phlegmatic thinks, "Is he angry at me?" If her best friend says,
"I really can't wear red lipstick," the sanguine-phlegmatic will think, "She's trying to tell me that
my lipstick looks terrible!" After all, the sanguine-phlegmatic has a double-dose of feeling; twice-
blessed by the tendency to prioritize relationships and harmony.
