OBEYING THE LAWS OF THE LAND
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. Servants, be
subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the
forward. 1 Peter 2:17, 18.
The apostle plainly outlined the attitude that believers should sustain toward the
civil authorities: “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake:
whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent
by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For
so is the will of God, that with welldoing ye may put to silence the ignorance of
foolish men: as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as
the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the
king.6The Acts of the Apostles, 522.
It is our duty in every case to obey the laws of our land, unless they conflict with
the higher law which God spoke with an audible voice from Sinai and afterward
engraved on stone with His own finger.... The ten precepts of Jehovah are the
foundation of all righteous and good laws. Those who love God's commandments
will conform to every good law of the land.7Testimonies for the Church 1:361, 362.
We are to recognize human government as an ordinance of divine appointment and
teach obedience to it as a sacred duty, within its legitimate sphere. But when its
claims conflict with the claims of God, we must obey God rather than men. God's
Word must be recognized as above all human legislation. A “Thus saith the Lord” is
not to be set aside for a “Thus saith the church” or a “Thus saith the state.” The
crown of Christ is to be lifted above the diadems of earthly potentates.
We are not required to defy authorities. Our words, whether spoken or written,
should be carefully considered.8The Acts of the Apostles, 69.

Teach the people to conform in all things to the laws of their state when they can
do so without conflicting with the law of God.9Testimonies for the Church 9:238.
I saw that it is our duty in every case to obey the laws of our land, unless they
conflict with the higher law which God spoke with an audible voice from Sinai, and
afterward engraved on stone with His own finger.Testimonies for the Church 1:361
He who obeys the divine law will most truly respect and obey the laws of his
country. He who fears God will honor the king in the exercise of all just and
legitimate authority. GC88 277.3
Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power
but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Rom 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of
God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then
not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the
same:
Rom 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that
which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of
God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Rom 13:5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for
conscience sake.
Rom 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers,
attending continually upon this very thing.
Rom 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is
due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Tit 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey
magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for
they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with
joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
